(The Young Bucks Tavern in the town of Calla is a place like many others. On this early evening, the Tavern is only about half full of your usual tradesmen, farmers and assorted other townspeople. Everyone is drinking and eating and generally having a good time. A young Half-Elf serving boy, Jack, floats around bringing everyone their food and ale.
The door opens and a Human Cleric enters, clad in heavy armor, a shield strapped to his back. He looks around, finds what he is looking for and walks over to the table where a motley crew of adventurers sit, staring at him intently as he silently pulls up a chair and takes a seat. The table has a sign on it that reads ‘1st time adventurers meet here’.)
"Ah, splendid! It looks like you all made it!"
(The tavern owner, a rotund and jolly-looking fellow of about 40, appears at the side of the table, smiling and holding what appears to be an envelope.)
"My name is Willfred, I am the owner of this fine establishment. Glad you all could make it. Your mutual friend has asked me to read this to you when you all arrived."
(He now opens it and takes out the enclosed letter. Unfolding it, he begins to read.)
Greetings, adventurers!
It is I, Craig, your friendly neighborhood shop keeper! You are all here because you all expressed interest in teaming up with other like-minded folks and going on adventures. I had all of your names on my LIST and I think all of you would be a good fit together. I hope I am correct. Take some time to get to know each other; I’m sure you’ll all become fast friends. Go forth and make your mark on the world!
Best of Luck!
Craig
(The assembled adventurers look around the table at each other. Willfred takes a little bow as he backs away.)
"Oh, this IS a good-looking group. You'll do well, very well indeed. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you."
(The crew looks each other over and sits for a few moments, until one of them rises up and begins to speak...)
DM's Notes: Ok, folks, go ahead and introduce your character to each other and give a brief description about your appearance, etc. No need to give your whole backstory, just introduce your character as they would introduce themselves. Looking forward to this! :)
Hello. I am Nelson. I am a ranger looking for companions who can help me reveng my master from the giant who slew him during his daily herb gathering.
(I am an average looking elf with long green breaded hair, I stand at 5' 11" tall, and I have light copper skin with light silver eys that have small shimmers of gold shining throug. I never go anywhere without my now. I wear a light set of leather armor with two short swords hung off my belt.)
Hello. I am Ludwig, the dwarf who is still young, Im Looking forward to be working with you. I may be harsh, but you can count on me in battle if That were to happend.
(Small dwarf, medium size, pretty packed with muscles. My beard is brown and mighty. My eyes are blue as the sea, and my skin is pale. I have 2 one handed battleaxes hanging from my side. I Never leave without them. I have an old rusty chainmail on)
"Hello, My name is Fabius DayWhisper. I look forward to adventuring with you. May Pelor bless us."
(Fabius is a 5'11" human with longer brown hair and green eyes. His short beard is well kept and accentuates his angular face. He wears chainmail with the robes of his order overtop. He carries a shield on one arm and his mace on his left hip. Hanging from his neck is a green amulet.)
"Hello! I am Winnalore. I am excited for this adventure and hopefully by the end of this I will be able to call you friends."
(Sitting upon her travel chest is Winnalore, a plump, sturdy female dwarf of about 83 years old. She has a head of red curls, milky pale white skin, with a warm rosy glow, and emerald green eyes. She wears leather armor over her common clothes with her trusty rapier attached to her left hip, and a dagger in her boot. She is carrying a backpack filled with memories of her old self, including brewer's supplies and cooking utensils.)
(Willfred comes back to the table with Jack in tow, who is carrying a round of Ale for you all. Jack serves you all your drinks as Willfred looks on, a smile on his face.)
"Master Craig has done it again."
(He sees you all looking at him, and senses he may have spoken out of turn.)
"I mean, of course, that lots of adventuring parties have found each other thru Craig's list. He's very good at making matches. Forgive me for being so bold, but I think he's done well bringing you 5 together. Very balanced, very balanced indeed. I mean, you have this muscled gentleman (he points at Ludwig) who looks handy with his axes... this charming lady here (he points at Winnalore) who can inspire you all to do great things. This armored man of the Gods (he points at Fabius) who can grant you all divine protection. This Elven fellow here (he nods to Caelum) who seems a bit shady... in the best way, of course... and our fine Wood Elf Ranger friend here (he points at Nelsin) who looks like he would feel at home in all kinds of wild terrains."
(Willfred clears his throat.)
"Well, enough about that. Please enjoy your ale, and let me know if I can help in any way."
(Willfred and Jack back off and let you all get to know each other. The ale loosens you up somewhat, and you slowly start to get used to each other. Mostly. About 30 minutes or so pass along this way, when...
Suddenly, a large, red-headed man in a black leather apron bursts thru the door, his muscular arms bleeding from some pretty gnarly gashes. A look of panic and terror is on his face, which is dirty and starting to swell up and bruise. He looks like someone beat the hell out of him.
“Bess!” he yells. “They got my Bess!”
He drops down to his knees and starts sobbing as the crowd starts to gather round.
(What do you all do?)
DMs note: Please feel free to get into character a bit more. Remember that part of the fun is to be able to roleplay as someone else, who would have their own way of speaking, mannerisms, etc. Hope you all have fun with this. :)
I stand up from my seat, runs across the room, still with ale in my hand. I push away everyone in my path, i look at the man.
”Hello my name is Ludwig i am here to help! (Takes a drink of my ale, clearly abit tipsy) i was once a warrior for a army, if u need my axes help (points at my axes hanging on my sides) i am ready and i bet ya, me friends will be gladly to help (points at Nelson and then the table)”
"Please move out of my way and give me some room." I walk over to the man and kneel down next to him. "Excuse me sir, but please try to calm down. We are here to help." I cast healing word "How are you feeling now?"
I remain seated; disregarding the ale, and listening closely to the commotion. I am always calm, no matter the situation. Constant vigilance I remind myself.
“Give the man some breathing room.” I say to no one in particular. “You’ll get more answers if you’re not overwhelming him.”
(I notice that my ale is all but a swig away from being gone and Caelum hasn't even sipped his yet. I pine over his ale until the man's commotions breaks me from my trance. While I am willing to help the man I stay back at our table. As I am leery of those I don't know. I stand on the top of my chest to allow me to see and take notice that there is still quite a crowd around the man.)
"Did you not hear the Elf! Sit down" I bellow "Give the poor man some space to breath. Sit him down and get him some ale!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Nelson is the first to arrive, kneeling next to the man and asking what has happened. Ludwig offers the man his blades, though it's not quite clear how they may help. Fabius walks over and casts Healing Word, healing the man for 7. Some of the man's cuts heal in front of your eyes, but he is still in rough shape.
Caelum, feeling it more sensible to give the man space, stays seated as Winnalore tries to help guide the man to a chair, but the man is not easily moved.)
Rickard! What's happened?"
(Willfred rushes to the side of the fallen man, who is still very distraught. His injuries, though numerous, do not seem to be the main source of his despair. He tries to compose himself, trying to answer in between sobs.)
"Gob... goblins. They broke into my workshop. I-I-I tried to stop them... I think I even killed one of them. But there were too many. They stabbed at me and beat me with clubs and... when I woke up my daughter was... gone!"
(Rickard quietly sobs as the crowd murmurs their disbelief. WIllfred starts explaining things to the party, who is gathered around.)
"Rickard is the Blacksmith here. And Bess, sweet little Bess is his 8 year-old daughter. She means the world to him. All he has ever since his wife passed a few years ago."
(A look of sudden realization appears on Willfred's face, a smile on his lips.)
"Rickard, my friend, don't despair! Look here! These here fine folks (he points towards the party) are skilled adventurers!"
“You-you’re adventurers? Please, you’ve got to help me! If I lost my Bess, I… I… I can pay you! I don’t have much, but I would give all the gold I have in the world if you can get my daughter back to me safely. Will you help me? Please, I beg you!”
(Rickard throws himself, both figuratively and literally, at the feet of the party, begging for help. The party begins to talk amongst themselves.)
DM's note: If you cast a spell or something, you do have to roll the dice. I went ahead and did it for you this time, Fabius. :)
OOC: Guys, can you please go into your signature and add your character name, race and class to the bottom of your posts? It's under Profile, Edit Profile, and there's a spot there for Signature. It would help me remember who's who faster. Also, everyone, feel free to use the Dice Roller thread to make sure you know how to roll a regular check as well as a basic attack. We'll still practice here, but try it out there first. Thanks a lot.
"There is no need to beg, my friend. We shall help you. I am eager to fight something right now." I say to Rickard, and offer him my ale. "Please, come sit with us. We will need more information if we are to find your daughter."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I look over Rickard and see that he is still quite hurt. Knowing that we would need him alive to locate the goblin liar and attempt to retrieve Bess I cast "Healing Word" 6.)
"Rickard, I am here to help and bring your dear Bess home." I speak softly "do you recall in which direction the goblins fled?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I stand up and walk towards the front door; having felt uncomfortable with the sight of such a large and observably strong man sobbing and begging. I hold the door open and peer out to see if I spot anything strange or noteworthy (perception check 11 )
(Caelum goes to the door and looks out, trying to assess if anything looks out of the ordinary. It seems to be a normal town on a normal evening. The rest of Rickard's visible wounds heal up as Winnalore uses her last spell slot to heal him. Rickard, still disoriented, is distracted by the barrage of questions from the party. When it becomes clear that the party is willing to help, a smile appears for the first time.)
"Thank you! Bless you all!"
(The grateful Blacksmith goes around thanking the adventurers, alternately hugging and enthusiastically shaking the hands of the brave party who has agreed to help him. You all notice he's walking with a bit of a limp. He tries to make sure to answer all of the questions he has been asked.)
"I'm sorry, I was unconscious, so as far as what direction they could have taken her... I haven't got a clue. We do live on the edge of town, and there are forests to the north of us, but as far as we know there's nothing there."
(He looks at you all expectantly. Willfred chimes in.)
"Nothing like this has happened around here for a long time. Last I can remember was maybe, 20, 25 years ago? Even then, I think it was more of Goblins attacking travelers up the road, not kidnapping little girls. There hasn't been any Goblin sightings around here since, that I can recall."
(The party follows Rickard to his workshop on the North edge of town. The signs of a struggle are everywhere: Broken pots litter the floor, splintered chairs and tables, etc. A goblin lays dead on the floor, a poker thus his chest. The layout of his workshop is roughly as shown:
"Well, here it is. I haven't really had a chance to look things over, I went for help as soon as I came to."
Spoiler for Nelsin ONLY:
Nelsin, your Ranger experience kicks in and you are automatically drawn to the tracks the goblins left. Using your Tracking skills (you automatically succeed) you are able to perceive that there were about 7 sets of tracks. 6 appear to be Goblin tracks, and 1 seems to be from a small human. The tracks seem to be going to a fence on the far northeast side of the property.
DM's Note: You are free to look around. A little note about Spoilers: When you get a spoiler, keep in mind that this is information only you know. It's up to you to convey that information to the rest of your party. If you don't tell them, they don't know.
Also, remember, if you're going to roll, the difference between Perception (I look and see...) and Investigation (I see and deduce...). You have to be specific about what you're looking at when you make an Investigation roll. You can't just say, "I Investigate the room." You have to say, for example, "I Investigate the Workbench." When you roll, make sure to add your modifiers. Look at your Character Sheet under Skills and add the number to your roll.
Sorry for the crappy Paint drawing, it's not to scale or anything, it's just meant to give you all a rough idea of how everything is set up. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I want to make sure stuff is clear for you guys.
