Enemy Wisdom Saving Throw: 1
Red, although not used to seeing underwater, spots the massive figure that he now realises is nothing more than a giant octopus. As he casts his spell, the octopus emits a strange sound - almost like a gargling screech. He notices that it releases the unconscious Vreek from its grasp, then squirts out a huge cloud of ink before propelling itself away and disappearing deeper into the abyss.
Aereek is also nearby, swimming towards his brother's body.
As Brozak rises from the deck once again, he sluggishly swings at the sea spawn next to him. His dizziness from being knocked unconscious causes his swing to miss and sail well over the creature's head.
Zagrot groggily looks up just in time to see Red swan-dive off the starboard side of the ship. "Aghzit! Aghzit!" he says frantically, pushing himself to his feet. "Man overboard!" he bellows out loud in his rough, orcish, baritone voice.
He stumbles between Brozak and the enemy, reaches into a crate, and pulls out a coil of rope. Then, eyeing the two remaining foes the way a child eyes a twirling jump-rope, the orc tries to dart between them as he scrambles towards the other side of the main deck, where Red jumped off.
OOC:
Zagrot uses the dodge action, moves to N-5 to grab the rope at M-4 with his free Interact action, then to M-7 (triggering two AoOs.)
The sea spawn watch Zagrot charge by with his bundle of rope without attacking. In that moment, Grout takes his opportunity to attack the one adjacent to him, aiming to decapitate it with his scimitar in two vicious strikes.
Grout Attack vs. Enemy: Attack: 25 Damage: 15
Grout Attack vs. Enemy: Attack: 19 Damage: 8
With his first swing, he takes the head clean off the nearest sea spawn which tumbles to the deck. For good measure, he charges the next one and runs it through the side of its abdomen with his curved blade.
The final sea spawn seems to realise the trouble it is in, surrounded and alone. It makes great effort to pull itself clear of Grout's sword, then avoids the advancing attacks of the group around it before diving overboard.
Ebokk snaps out of his daze and runs over to the starboard gunwale. He lifts one of the sealed barrels with his dwarvish strength and throws it in the water close to where Red is submerged. The barrel hits the water and sinks a few feet before bouncing back up to the surface and floating a few feet from the tiefling. "Redemption! Quickly, hurry out of there before it returns!" He begins unravelling one of the rope ladders pinned to the deck and tosses it over too.
Grout turns and surveys the carnage around him. Three men lay dead on the deck, with another four wounded and unconscious. He immediately goes to work, ripping his shirt to create makeshift tourniquets. "It's clear now, fellas! Come up and help us with the wounded!" The man shouts through the small gaps in the decking before turning to the few of you clustered around him. "You have my thanks," he makes eye contact with Zagrot and nods, "all of you." He looks as though he wishes to say more, but the spluttering cough of a man regaining consciousness beside him catches his attention and he leaves words unsaid for the time being.
Red barely hears the shouting of the dwarf as he swims towards the ink cloud. Suddenly, Aereek swims free of it, clearly struggling to carry his brother whose flailing wings create a lot of drag.
[OoC]: Combat is over, unless anybody wishes to chase down the fleeing enemies through the depths. Therne can add giant octopus to her list of known forms for when she is able to use it. This is my last post for tonight, I think I may have managed to fix my internet too so I shouldn't be affected too much. Congratulations on beating that encounter, it was a tough one!
Therne will make her way over to the edge where the aarakocra and then Red disappeared, as delicately as she can in this form, not wanting to cause more damage. *Can you swim?* she asks Zagrot. *I can anchor the rope and pull, if the strength of this form will be useful while I still have it.*
Red looks around underwater for crew before lunging to the surface. As he pops up he is still singing
On we sweep with, with threshing oar - Our only goal will be the western shore...
Then searches the surface as well. If he sees any one - suface or below, alive or dead - he'll guide them toward the hull with Mage Hand

“Is anyone suffering from the effects of the poison?”
He moves to the fallen sailors and places his hands on their wounds and mutters a prayer to Bahamut.
Ooc: Brozak can Lay on Hands to cure anyone from poison, or just heal them for 5 hp. Whichever is needed. He will also cast (spell) cure wounds (/spell) on the two most greviuosly wounded.
Zagrot eyes the bear carefully, almost suspiciously. "I can swim. You hold rope? Pull I and Red and bird-mans to ship? All too heavy for ladder."
He quickly lashes one end of the rope to his waist, taking extra time to tie the knot, and hands the other end to Therne. Then he dives over the edge.
Once in the water, he makes his way to Red and the aarakocra. "Here! I bend your luck," he says matter-of-factly to the tiefling as he takes the unconscious bird-man.
After helping them to the ladder, Zagrot has Aereek clamp onto his back, and takes the aarakocra's brother under a burly arm. Then he tugs on the rope with the other, setting his feet into the rungs of the ladder. "We are ready!" his voice booms across the water. "Pull rope, big little bear-woman!"
Once he is up, fiddle retrieved, immediate rescues taken care of, and he is dry-ish:

Seeing Zagrot dive over with the rope, Yaro make his way over to the bear on deck to assist with hauling up the overboard crew.

After everyone is safely aboard, he drops to a knee, breathing deeply. "I am tired, but no worse for the wear, I can help keep watch while the crew is recovering."
Abner will do what he can to help the injured, especially Vreek.
Then, after wiping off the fishy bits that he was sprayed with, Abner will use his Mending skills to try to slowly but methodically repair the damage to the deck Therne caused.
Zagrot is in shambles. He's soaked, his shirt is almost completed shredded from the claws of the enemy, and he's covered with his own blood which is still seeping out of his wounds.
After he helps the two aarakocra aboard, he stumps slowly next to Brozak's side and throws himself to the ground, with his back against a barrel. As Red plays a soothing tune, the orc tends to his lacerations, wiping away the blood and seawater with the heel of his hand, inspecting the gray, tattooed skin beneath. From time to time he winces.
He looks up at the dragonborn. "You fight like orc, soup-brother. You run to fight three as one. No scared. You show daragth pohgr'ta*" Zagrot grins slightly, his teeth barely showing. "I am happy to share battle with you on your ship-journey. Maybe you and I have same hurt-marks after we to heal?"
For those who speak Goblin:
daragth pohgr'ta: literally, head full of hornets. It's a pejorative term goblins use to describe the blind and foolish fearlessness exhibited by orcs in battle; orcs consider it a compliment, especially coming from cowards who don't understand the honor of strength, and of striking fear into an opponent.
OOC:
Zagrot first hit die roll: 4 plus Red's Song of Rest: 5
Okay, that's weird. Let's try it again: 5 Hit Die, and 4 Song of Rest
Oh, now the first one is showing LOL. I would have rolled a 2nd hit die after that first roll, so I'll just take this 2nd (minus the 2nd Song of Rest)
Red fails to find any other crew in the depths, though as far as he knows only Fat Drane went overboard. Therne and Zagrot combine their strength to get the tiefling and the two aarakocra on board. Aereek collapses into an exhausted pile of feathers once he realises that his brother is in the safe hands of Abner. The rest of you make use of your abilities to best repair, heal and help the ship and the crew, spending the next couple of afternoon hours recovering from your battle and surveying the efforts to get everything back to normal.
The slain men are wrapped in soft fabric before being thrown overboard - a sailing tradition in these parts, while Vreek and the other wounded are carried to hammocks below deck to rest. Aereek approaches Red and Abner on deck, trying his best to gesture for them to gather. He wordlessly bows to each of you, then bows in the direction of your other companions. He presses his hand to his heart, folding his wings around him briefly. When his wings unfold, he stands with a brilliant sapphire in his grip the size of a raspberry. He nods his head as he hands the sapphire to Red, then makes a motion as if to smash the gem on the ground, but lingers his hand near the tiefling's for a moment to ensure he doesn't copy.
Yaro sits on the prow of the ship as he did when you first spotted him, keeping a watchful eye on your destination. Later that night, as you are all sat in your partition playing dice with Aereek and the recovering Vreek, Ebokk pushes his way through the divide and takes a seat. He lets out a huge sigh and takes a swig from a wine skin. "What a day! The good news is that we've made good time despite our interruptions, and should arrive tomorrow morning. Vreek, are you and your brother up to scouting for us still?" He asks, uncomfortably. "I'll do my best!" The aarakocra replies, jovial as ever as he rolls a couple of ivory dice and whoops at the result.
"Good." The dwarf replies with a smile. "I bear other news too. Provided that you are happy with the arrangement, Zagrot, I have purchased your contract from Bosun Grout." He offers you a smile before continuing. "It would serve us well to have somebody as ferocious as yourself in a pinch, and Grout couldn't refuse my offer. Once we've achieved what we set out to do, you can continue to work for me, or go your own way - I'll not hold it against you." The dwarf hands the orc a small scroll tube sealed in orange wax, then stands and addresses the rest of you.
"Best get a good night's sleep my friends. I'm of the understanding that Grout has posted extra watchmen on deck, so we'll have plenty of warning if we are attacked again!" He lightly throws his bulging wine skin atop the small pile of coppers that you were using for a betting pot with a chuckle, then exits the partition, leaving your group alone as the day draws to a close.
Red:

He's thinking about Zagrot's poisoning, now abated. He ponders his proficiency with his Herbalism Kit and the years he learned studying herbs while living in the woods as a hermit. While Brozak (and others?) have magical means of curing poisons, it seems, what would it take to produce an antitoxin from scratch with his kit?
Abner pulls out his dagger and with his arms pushed through his hammock, scratches his name into the deck below him. A - B - N - E - R
Then he tucks in for a long rest, imagining what unsettling things may be lurking deep directly below him right now.

Because of his poor Common, it took some time and explaining (and perhaps a smattering of Orc or Goblin that any of the party or NPCs were able to provide) for Zagrot to understand what "purchased your contract from Bosun Grout" meant. Once he understood, the orc replied quickly to Ebokk, "Yes! Yes! I am happy! I work for you! I go with other-landers!" He then bowed—clearly a physically awkward gesture for his muscle-bound frame—and took the tube gracefully from the dwarf while repeating "I thank you!" about half a dozen times.
For the rest of the evening Zagrot mostly avoided the ship's crew and quietly stuck close to Brozak or Red, a wide, tight-lipped smile drawn clear across his gray face. Whenever he caught sight of Captain Grout, he would run up to the man and ask him if his help was needed, but usually it was not; evidently there was no animosity between the two of them, neither in the past nor with Zagrot's recent "acquisition."
Brozak watches the dice game, but also does not participate. He sits on a crate and leans back, resting. At the mention of Zagrot joining the expedition, Brozak perks up.
"Glad to hear that you will be joining us, Zagrot. Here is to many more meals shared." He lifts his mug toward the orc, and takes a swig.
As the hour grows late, Brozak groans and heads to bed, ready to rest up after the arduous day.

Current Roles:
GM - Fata Morgana: The Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Brozak watches the dice game, but also does not participate. He sits on a crate and leans back, resting. At the mention of Zagrot joining the expedition, Brozak perks up.
"Glad to hear that you will be joining us, Zagrot. Here is to many more meals shared." He lifts his mug toward the orc, and takes a swig.
As the hour grows late, Brozak groans and heads to bed, ready to rest up after the arduous day.
Brozak - Red Dragonborn Paladin, lvl 2, Never Winter, Seldom Spring
Therne is pretty quiet for the remainder of the day. She’s bound her ribs, but they still ache, so she is limiting her movement.
Hit dice: 6
When Ebokk comes in to give them the news that they should arrive tomorrow, she asks “Do you have any idea what to expect there? I should like to prepare more useful spells than I had today.”
