Zook's emotional tide takes a dramatic turn for the better when he sees the elves stream out of the forest and frighten off the orcs. "Well, I suppose that prayers really are answered!" he says, thinking with a sense of wonder and awe about how the situation just played out. His heart sinks a little bit when he sees them turn and head back towards the trees, and he inquires aloud, albeit not very loud. He's sure that noone of the elves even hear him. "Wait... where are you going?"
He much would have preferred having them hang around a little longer, but he knows as well as anyone that things don't always work out in a way that pleases everyone, or that there are seldom clear answers to accompany life's odd occurrences.
Turning to Mandaway, he says, "I don't know... I'm not one to meddle in the mundane. I'm more of a big picture guy... ha ha!! Imaging that! However, I also believe in helping other and lending my hands, feet and mind for good causes. Although I don't feel it's our part to get caught up in the middle of the politics of this town, perhaps we should see if we can find out where the villagers went and inform them that their town is now safe. At least from giants and goblins."
"That said, I'm like you... I don't trust these Zhemtarim people, and I don't think that they have very good intentions if the villagers do come back. However, the people who live here have a right to be told that whatever it was that chased them out is now gone. Of course, that opens up the issue that now it's been taken over by a band of supposed scoundrels."
"Mandaway, everything about these past couple of days is so confusing. I do not know what the right answer is, but I feel pretty strongly that it's our duty to lend a hand where needed. And even though the main threat to Nightstone is gone, things are definitely not right here, and it seems that our destiny has put us right in the middle of a very uncomfortable situation. Of course, it's through difficulty that we grow stronger and wiser, so perhaps we do have a part to play here."
"I just wish that I were a bit MORE wise, because then I think I'd know for certain what we should do. As it stands, my friend, I'm afraid that I'm as confused as anyone. What are your thoughts?"
Mandaway smiled at Zook, " The living are more important than the dead, we go to the cave....what was it called again, we did we get directions?....and tell them what happened. What the Zhents do with the dead is their business, though I hope they all find rest."
Hawk puts a paw on Zook's shoulder and attempts some wise words, but he's not as poetic as Zook is:
Don't overthink this. Let the gods guide you, let your emotions free and feel what the present requires the most!
He then nods to Mandaway: To the living then!
Hawk will ask for help lowering the drawbridge and cautiously make his way out, keeping his eyes open and ears alert to make sure all the Orcs are well gone (Perception: 16). He then starts looking around for any signs or tracks left behind by a group of humanoids fleeing the town (Survival:10).
The Zhents ose the drawbridge behind you and don't pay attention. You can't find the tracks easily. There are tracks but finding what you want among the orc foot prints proves too challenging
You head north for a mile and find a gaping cave mouth on the south face of a rocky hill topped with pine trees.

Mandaway hung a little ways back while the sneakier folk had a look, " Why do I get the creeping sensation this is just going to get more complicated rather than simpler...", he whispered to himself.
OOC: Is anyone other than Mandaway injured? EDIT: Ok, Everyones on full except Zook who is -5 and Mandaway who is on 3. So I'm going to burn Spell Slot to Cure Wounds Mandaway. Still have Channel Divinity in hand for a group heal.

Zook sighs with a sense of relief as soon as he’s on the other side of the drawbridge and free of the strange confines of the now Zhent-controlled village of Nightstone. Glad to be walking in nature again, even if it’s a short stroll, he sniffs the fresh air, listens to the sounds and keeps his eyes out for any creatures, big or small... especially small.
When they come across the cave, he waits with Mandaway while Bert and Hawk go forward and peek into the entrance. When they return, he says,
”An ogre! That’s almost a giant, right? From what I known they’re quite foul tempered and prone to violence at the slightest provocation. And I’m pretty sure they smell worse than orcs. In the company of another greenie, you say? We seem to be finding more trouble at every turn.”
”I would really like to see what’s inside that cave, but I don’t suppose it’s worth trying to sneak by. I could try and distract them while Bert and Hawk get into arrow range. I’m feeling rather bold right now, and besides, I’ve never talked to an ogre before. What do you think, is that a dumb idea?”
Mandaway chuckled, " I suppose we could get him to attack the Zhents....after all they are the ones who killed all his goblins. Right?", he finished with a wink.

Bert's been quiet the whole trip out with Hawk, hanging back and repeatedly looking back at Nightstone. He's worried about leaving the Zhents alone with what remains of the town guard. But he doesn't want Hawk getting into trouble so he watches his back. (Stealth: 12)
Also on his mind is the magical tendrils that have been clouding his vision for the last few minutes. His kind, the eladrin, are the most magic-focused of the elves, but he's never thought of himself as a mage like many of his family members. But given all the dangers and uncertainty life's been throwing at the simple cartographer, perhaps he should give into his heritage. It might keep him safe (OOC: Bert's now an Arcane Trickster at Level 3, and he'll have spells to use... I haven't had time to pick them out yet completely but I'll be done soon.)
Seeing the ogre and the goblin, he tries to check for any kind of tracks in the dirt around the cave to see if the townspeople were there. (Survival: 11)
Rejoining Zook and Mandaway, he is, as always, seemingly out of his element and ready to take his companions' leads. He doesn't even reach out to try to stop Mandy from walking into the cave, because the cleric always seems to know what he's doing, and Bert's just there to lend a hand and give backup. His bow's got an arrow ready, but not nocked or drawn. He'll try to stay out of sight as Mandy enters the cave. (Stealth: 9)

OOC: Do I need to make a check to see if Mandaway can recall the name of the cave and the direction the guards indicated?
OOC: Bert is very purposefully not talking about the bat cave north of town with the Zhents around.
Mandaway moved away from the Zhents at least 30m and asked, very quietly, when they should head north.

Bert would accompany Hawk and help him look for tracks, if that's still possible...
Any signs of people near the cave entrance? Perception/Survival: 11
This must be the cave the guards were talking about! Wonder how deep it goes...
Hawk will slowly approach the cave entrance to get a better view of the inside. (Stealth: 20)

The cave is dark, but you have darkvison. You see an ogre bathing in a pool of mud. And you see a goblin on a ledge

Hawk will go back to his companions and relate what he saw:
Well, I didn’t see any townsfolk, but there is an Ogre and a Greenie... it was hard to see if there is anything else in that cave..

“Now THERE’S a good idea!! Should I give it a go and see if I can convince these two oafs to go pay our new friends a visit?”
So what is happening? Who is doing what?

" Why not. I'll go with you.", Mandaway accompanied Zook in walking boldly into the cave with a friendly smile.
