Sent a few days ago on your first assignment for one of the sword coast's most important secret organization, you have been apprehensive at the thought of what that assignment might entail. You arrived at the town of Yartar without any trouble. Your only directive has been to gather a group of adventurers and wait for an agent to contact you about the details of the mission. The tavern seemed like the obvious choice, but you didn't spot any group material so far. Sipping on your mead as to sooth your weary mind, you suddenly hear a woman's voice over the loud carousing of other clients. Her clothes are torn, her intimacy barely covered, as if some dark alley thug just forced himself on her. You can't make out if she is wailing or condemning vehemently the gathered crowd but her last words are clear: "May the Eternal Fire consumes us all". She has an orb in her hands, which quickly becomes brighter until the tavern is bathed in blinding light. You are blasted off a dozen of feet away into the cellar, your whole body aching from the shock, and for some time reality doesn't seem to reach you. As you finally manage to get back on your feet, the whole tavern as been turned into an inferno, charred corpses laying everywhere around you. You quickly escape the building, praising your lucky star.
The night air cools you off, you are nevertheless feeling more and more concerned as you see other parts of the city ablaze. At least guards and soldiers are everywhere guiding survivors through the streets. You follow them until you reach the entrance of the city. The crowd stops there, blocked by heavy armored knights. Your instincts tell you to lay low and avoid getting involved further. Hiding behind a low wall, you observe the scenes with utmost silence. The general tension of the crowd rises, bordering on panic, as more soldiers converge around the crowd, effectively preventing anyone from leaving. A towering figure appears on the town walls, illuminated by the blazing city. A majestic and beautifully adorned elf. "Citizens of Yartar, you have been chosen. Fear not, for I am a prophet." As if to emphasize her last word, a pair of giant wings spread out from her back. "I am Queen Aerisi, and I will free you from the shackles of your earthly vessels." The remaining town population, trapped in that pocket, tries desperately to escape their gruesome fate. A portal opens above, inside you see a heavenly sky with angels reaching down to the crowd. The trapped inhabitants have their breath taken away by the enrapturing spectacle. But as soon as the angels reach the entrance of the portal, they turn into spears of pure light, impalling men, women and children indiscriminately. After a few moments, a pile of corpses is the only remainder of what was a bustling, wealthy town.
Hiding for the whole night, you carefully crawl out in the morning only to be greeted by the sinister sight of hundreds of bodies left to rot under the scorching sun. As you approach you see faces twisted by euphoria. Looking around, you are not the only survivor. You gather around this uncanny display of power, preparing to leave as soon as possible.
Write down who your character is, which faction they came to join (Harpers, Lord's Alliance, Order of the Gauntlet, Zhentarim, Emerald Enclave), how and why.
This is a modified version of the Princes of the Apocalypse, one of it's most prominent feature being an emphasis on the factions. Each player will belong to a faction that doesn't necessarily share the same goals. Accomplishing tasks for a faction will be rewarded by experience points and/or magical items. Some factions will have opposite goals that can't be reconciled, yet each player need the collective strength of the group. In simple words: backstabbing is to be expected. As an example: player A has to interogate a NPC to get clues about the location of an artifact. Player B has to get rid of the NPC to avoid said artifact to be retrieved. The more cunning and covert you are the more powerful you will become.
Every player can split from the group at any time and come back, or act without the group knowing, they just have to sent me their roleplay through private message.
I have all the sources books that I will share once you access the campaign, no homebrew allowed.
Edit: please send me your reply through Private Message.
