OOC: Lol - I had the same thought the other day about Jurassic Park feeling too little like science fiction and more like a prophetic warning.
The mayor huh??? Alright-alright :)
In the year since the defeat of the Prophet's Army, George has founded the Mayor's Own - what started as a joke bit from the remnants of a local co-ed scout troop has turned into the beginnings of a robust elite unit of archers that double as a not so ceremonial bodyguard force. George works them every day with longbows and skirmishing drills. Others teach them martial arts (Uthvern?) and drill them with sword and shield. Over time his training marches in the woods turn into regular patrols of the state park, clearing out the odd group of eaters or bandits, and installing a network of caches in case of emergency. The caches double as safehouses and dead drop locations for George's second career - coordinating the burgeoning intelligence network he has built to keep tabs on the Tyrant of Portland. Runaway serfs - slaves in all but name only - provide the most consistent source of information coming out of what was Portland. All reports have the same flavor, misery, death and cruelty have taken over the once beautiful Emerald City.

Yep, the mayor. She is a warlock and can summon her own familiar
The spy network lets you know that the PPA (Portland Protective Association) are expanding out. They have a method of building castles very quickly using cement they recovered in the early days of the Change. They put the castles on main travel routes.
Well since Uthvern has met the horse trainer, he would have spent the rest of the time enjoying her company and learning about horses. He figured it'd be useful since horses are now important and also the fact of she is interested in them brings him to be interested in them. All the while, Uthvern, will also teach the Mayor's Own about sword drills, bare handed grappling, and other skills that he could teach. Also going along and doing missions when needed.
Ooc- If we are posting a years worth, do we gain levels as far as RP goes?

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
During the following year of his time on this world, Thomas gathers more spells and begins forming a cadre of able magic-users into a sort of school. Requesting and taking over a large building near the edge of the settlement, he and those who can start developing and training with various spells into forms useful for defending the growing city. One of the more popular solutions this budding 'Mage School" produces is everlasting programmed defense alarms that sound off based on conditions provided by the town's defenders (Magic Mouth). All approaches are 'mined' with these subtle devices, simple rocks that have the magic embedded within them, warning the town's defenders far in advance of any unusual activity. Other uses for the newly rediscovered magic are found, from cloud cover against attackers (Fog Cloud), armor for defenders when none exists (Mage Armor), sound suppression for stealth missions (Silence) and the like, proving usefulness beyond simple tricks. Soon enough, every task force sent out into the wilds of the Changed world have at least one Mage with them, increasing their survival rates tremendously.
As far as Thomas himself, he soon encounters a refugee that shows a talent and interest in the magic, falling in love as he spends more and more time exploring their mutual abilities and interests. During that same year, he and Alice marry, knowing the uncertainty of this world can only be handled with the love of another. When he can, they spend time on the water, sailing free on the deep blue of the seas teeming with burgeoning life, no longer farmed to near extinction by man.

The Doc is a wizard. Absolutely useless in combat but his lifelong interest in fantasy means that he has suddenly found that all this stuff he has been playing with now works.
To make this simple if you go to Game Rules/Spells/Wizard (at the top of each page on the site). In the spell level field choose 2nd level/hit the 'filter spells' button you will get all the 2nd level spells. You can sort by duration to put all the long duration spells at the top. Pick three that you have found during the past year.. (All above is good except that Silence is a Cleric spell)
Do you remember that ship you found where you got your tactical armour? The mayor has. There was an invoice that indicated that the factory where it was made is near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
'New Mexico huh? That's a long walk. Not much better on horse or bike either call it 4 weeks each way on horse or bike minimum. But more of that armor could be a gamechanger. The scouts have worked up a hybrid armor of chain shirts sandwiched between layers of soft leather. It works well and still lets them maintain a low profile, but that Tac Armor is the next level. I can't imagine we'd find enough to outfit the militia, but enough for an elite strike team of 50-100 deployed at the right moment might be enough to counter that lunatic up north.'
George looks over the maps, plotting various routes in his head, thinking through options and angles. None of them great, but avoiding major metro areas should limit run-ins with Eaters.
'Ok, I think we can do this. The real question is, should we?'
Uthvern grunts and then looks at the townspeople he had come to love and vowed to protect since they took him in. "My opinion? Yes. I know that this will take a while. And I know its gonna take it's toll on us and our loved ones, but we need to get our hands on this armour and make damned sure that the crazy shit head up north doesnt get them or anything else the company might have made."

Doctor Novella has some comments "You don't have to walk, or ride. Take the boat down to San Diego then cycle across. I have an ulterior motive to suggest this as well. My daughter is a Captain in the Marine Corp and is stationed at MCAS Miramar as a flight instructor. Her husband and children live of base. I can give you addresses of places they may be."
Thomas puts in his thoughts as well “We can try to avoid major settlements, to prevent serious mission complications. Also, if we can’t retrieve the armor, we should consider the need to destroy it or anything we can’t take with us. How are going to transport the goods, even if we do get it? 100 sets of this stuff isn’t light. “ thinking a bit about the PPA he adds “This kind of organizational development is much like how the Middle Ages evolved into our modern society. Fiefdoms, kings, knights and all the ‘strength makes right’ mentality eventually gets into a more fair system, but only after the warlords are finished. We should think about how to accelerate that process. “

It's 700 odd miles from San Diego to Truth or Consequence, you'll need a lot of gear for the trip." To Thomas' point "The 'warlords' may take a lot of years before they're finished."
"Exactly my point. Perhaps a bit of fifth column work can help them to murder each other off in a suitably quick manner? The disguise spells we can use could do a lot of damage, if used the right way. Warlord A insults Warlord B, while Warlord C's troops raid Warlord A's patrols."

'The good news is that while many of the others are crazy - the MacKenzies all wear kilts, the Bearkillers have started branding each other, the CORA think they are living in a wild west movie - but none of them are straight-up evil, except for the PPA. We really only have to worry about them. They have ******* slaves for chrissakes. I say we move on New Mexico - the suits will help us with the destabilizing work Thomas is proposing. We can take some of the Mayor's Own and Alesiters LRRP Medics are literal lifesavers. We need to take enough to scare off bandits, but a small enough group to fit on a couple of boats. Thomas - how many could we comfortable move with supplies? 10-15?'
"While we'd be slow on the water if we do this, we could tow two boats with the supplies and only have the people on Sheila. We could then carry about 20 people plus supplies. It'd be crowded, but livable for a short time. She has eight bunks, so sleeping in shifts." He grins. "We could even come under fog cover when we head to shore, but we'd be a bit obvious. Even after all this time, I've not seen many boats on the ocean. I think too many people who knew how to sail have died after the Change."

No level gains from downtime. I use milestones for levelling up because it makes more sense to do it that way and I’m too lazy to track xp.

"Good point. At present it is settling down to 5 major powers. Clan Mackenzie, The Bearkillers, Corvallis, Central Oregon Ranchers Association (CORA) and the PPA with a bunch of minor player; Us, Mount Angel, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Pendleton plus a gazillion local strongholds.
