Carp's face beams with pride at the praise and newly-given responsibility of watching out for his mother. "Yes - protect the ones I love above all else! That's what a good adventurer does, besides slay monsters and find loot! Here, let me draw you where I found the tunnel. You'll see! I'm a clever lad!" In the dirt, Carp draws a crude map of the area between the farm and the manor, highlighting key features and landmarks to look for.
Quilline pulls Rand aside while Carp is giving his directions and says, "If you truly be adventurers, then you should visit my old friend Reidoth the druid, since there’s not an inch of the land he doesn’t know. Reidoth recently set out for the ruins of a town called Thundertree, just west of the Neverwinter Wood. It's about fifty miles northwest of Phandalin, but I can give you directions so you can easily find the place, if you want."
(OOC: I'm back from the mountains! Sorry I didn't have the signal that I thought I would have while on vacation... thought I would be able to post more)
Rand contemplates Quilline's information for a moment. "Thank you, My Lady, we appreciate all the aid we can muster, and developing relationships with good people like you and your friend Reidoth is often of more help to us than the sharpest sword. Speaking of developing relationships, we heard of a wizard named Albrek who is supposed to be here in Phandalin. We believe he may be able to aid us in our quest. Have you heard of him, or know where we might find him?"
Once the group moves on, Rand tells the others about the conversation with Quilline. "I got the sense that if someone might know the whereabouts of a certain Cragmaw Castle, it would be the druid Reidoth. Of course, she said he is 50 miles away... that is quite a distance to journey on a hunch."
Salty flashes his blood red eyes to the group as he takes off his sunglasses to clean a smudge. "We might not have to go that far to get similar information. There's a former adventurer named Daran Edermath who's an orchard keeper for some trees on the north west side of town. There's a chance he might know a thing or two about Cragmaw Castle. Hell, he might have killed the last thing that chose to take dumps there."
Once he puts his glasses back on he treats his last words as an afterthought and pulls out his harmonica. "So check it out, I wrote us a song last night and it goes like this -"
The kinky haired half-drow begins to play as the group travels along.
To the town of Phandalin rode some strangers one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around them, didn't have too much to say, No one dared to ask their business, no one dared to make a slip The strangers there among them had big irons on their hips, Big irons on their hips
It was early in the morning when They rode into the town They came riding from the south side, slowly lookin' all around "Buncha outlaws loose and runnin'", came a whisper from each lip "And they're here to do some business with big irons on their hips, Big irons on their hips"
In this town there lived some outlaws with names Branded Red Many men had tried to take them and that many men were dead Known as vicious, known as killers, many youths of twenty four And the notches on their scabbards numbered one and nineteen more, One and nineteen more
Now the strangers started talkin' made it plain to folks around That a fat old ball of justice, was rolling strait into their town They were here to take the outlaws back alive or maybe dead And said it didn't matter that they were after Branded Red After Branded Red
Wasn't long before this story was heard by the Branded Red But the outlaws didn't worry, men who tried before were dead Twenty squads had tried to take them, twenty squads had made a slip, Twenty one would be the strangers with big irons on their hips, Big irons on their hips
Now the morning passed so quickly and it was time for them to meet It was twenty past eleven when they rode out in the street Folks were watchin' from their windows, Every body held their breath, They knew these handsome strangers were about to meet their death, About to meet their death
There was twenty feet between them When they stopped to make their play And the swiftness of The Strangers is still talked about today The Banded Red had not cleared leather when their weapons barely ripped And the stranger's strikes were deadly, with big irons on their hips, Big irons on their hips
It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round There before them lay the bodies of the outlaws on the ground Oh, they might have went on livin' but they made one fatal slip When they tried to match the strangers with big irons on their hips, Big irons on their hips
Big iron, big iron, Oh they tried to match the strangers with big iron on their hips, Big iron on their hips
Once hes done he stops and asks the group, "I want to call it the 'Ballad of The Strangers' what do you think?"
(OOC: That a fat old ball of justice, was rolling strait into their town...=)
Quillene answers Rand's question, "I heard that Albrek disappeared while exploring the area around Tresendar Manor about two months ago, shortly after arriving in Phandalin. Nobody's seen nor heard from him since. Maybe he ran afoul of them Redbrands? Anyway, you folk take care, you hear? Twas a real pleasure to meet you!"
(OOC: It's about dinnertime now - will you head to the Stonehill Inn for sustenance and to see how far into his cups Raldaen is? Or will you seek out Sildar to get the gold he promised you? Perhaps head somewhere else before turning in for the night? Maybe go looking for the secret tunnel Carp just described for you? So many choices!!)
Ok, I will throw out an idea to get the discussion going. Seeing as it is around dinner time, we could go look for Sildar, get our reward, and then go back to the inn for the night.
Do we know who runs this town? That shed is bothering me, because someone tried to get in but couldn't, and I'm not convinced slavery is the motive. Perhaps we could get a 'search warrant' for lawful entry?
First thing in the morning, we could go scout out Carp's tunnel.
Bankur bows deeply to Quillene. "It was a pleasure to run across your path lady Quillene. Thank you for the information, and may the gods shine always on you and your boy."
While leaving Quillene's farm, Bankur tries to hum and clap in tune with Salty Joe's song, but fails miserably and eventually gives up. "I never could carry a tune. But you obviously can! Bravo friend Joe! A fine performance that was!"
((OOC: Agree with Rand's plan of action, on all points! The shed was bothering me too, and I think it would be worth investigating. So - 1) get reward from Sildar, 2) Head back to Inn and rescue what's left of the town's ale from Raldaen, 3) Sleep 4) Look for the tunnel in the morning and/or investigate the shed))
As the group leaves Alderleaf farm Penumbra thanks the halflings and flips a gold coin to Carp for the information.
When Salty finishes his song Penumbra says, "You're very talented Salty. I enjoyed that song quite a bit, though I prefer small steel to big iron myself." She balances a dagger on her finger tip before flipping the blade in the air and catching it by the hilt, and then returning it to its sheath.
(That plan sounds good to me. I believe Linene mentioned the Townmaster to us when discussing the Redbrands. As Penumbra said before she is uncomfortable breaking into a shop owned by honest people who probably don't have anything to spare, and would rather enter legally, however she trusts this group and if her new friends really believe that they need to get in there she will help, even without permission.)
Returning to the Stonehill Inn, the party finds Sildar, but not Raldaen.
Sildar waves you over to his table. “Good evening, friends! Here - I have something for you! Thank you again for rescuing me. Next time I will pay better attention for an ambush! Will one of you give the other man in your party his share?" He hands each of you a small, leather purse filled with 50 pieces of gold.
"After a fine rest last night, I established myself at the townmaster’s hall. I am an agent of the Lords’ Alliance, and my goal is to bring law and order to Phandalin. As such, I want to find the lost mine of Wave Echo Cave and help the Rockseeker brothers put it back into production. I believe that bringing prosperity to the region will help civilize this town, and that cave will provide the way. Of course, this means driving out those Cragmaw goblins, too. I will give you a 500 gp reward if you locate Cragmaw Castle and defeat or drive off the tribe’s chieftain.”
“I also mean to find Iarno Albrek, a fellow member of the Lords’ Alliance,” he continues. “I questioned several locals today, only to learn that he disappeared while exploring the area around Tresendar Manor about two months ago, shortly after arriving in Phandalin. I ask you to investigate the manor and the surrounding area to find and bring back Iarno — or what’s left of him, if something killed him. Iarno is a short, dark-bearded human wizard in his thirties. How about you? How was your day in Phandalin?”
Thank you, Sildar. We appreciate the reward, and we would like to help even more. We have a couple of leads we are following up and you may be able to give us some direction:
There is a group called the Redbrands that has been causing trouble in the town. They are behind the disappearance of a family here in town. We want to help find them. We went to their house, and did not discover much in the way of clues for a motive of why the family was attacked. They do have a shed, however, that has attracted our interest. Someone tried to break in and failed. If the Town Master recognizes your authority, would it be appropriate for you to grant permission for us to enter the shed for investigative purposes? We have a lead on the location of the Redbrands, but I would prefer knowing as much as possible before going in.
Listening to Rand speak to Sildar, Bankur nods in agreement. "I think the family would understand our entering their shed in the name of investigating their disappearance. We promise to lock it again behind us and will leave everything as undisturbed as possible."
"And yes! Where has friend Raldaen gotten to indeed!... Maybe he finished all of the ale within reach and has gone off searching for more? Perhaps friend Tarin can send his feathered companion to scout the surrounding areas outside the settlement while we make inquiries of the people inside?" Bankur says while giving Tarin a gentle prod.
Bankur then proceeds to question the people in the inn to inquire if anyone has seen Raldaen lately.
Sildar ponders your reasoning and request about the woodcarver's workshop. "I don't see any harm in finding a way in to investigate the disappearance. I ask only that you take nothing and lock it up behind you. If you can not pick the lock, don't break it! Locks are fairly rare and hard to come by out here."
One of the old guys in the Inn comes up to the group and says, “Couldn’t help but overhear y’all. Yer lookin’ fer that rough one, yeah? He was in here couple hour ago, two-fisting his drink and getting pissed! Well, ol’ Toblen grabs ‘im by the back of his shoulders and steers him right out of the inn, tossing him roughly to the ground fer ‘is bad manners and such. Then the lout yells back,"Bah, yer good fer nothin' dog. There be other places t' spend me coin at!" Then he gets up and wanders off!” He then rips off a belch and wanders back to his bench.
Salty's focus zeroes in on a lute laying nearby and almost instantly he finds himself tuning the instrument as a melody floods into his mind.
The bard begins to riff and his fingertips glow as arcane energy builds up at the tips of his fingers and the sound of the notes take on a distorted electrical quality. Salty Joe looks over to Penumbra, "Aye Small Steel! This ones for you."
That girl thinks she's the queen of the rooftops She's got the fastest hands in town That girl, she holds her head up so high I think I wanna be her best friend, yeah
Devil girl, Devil girl Devil girl you are the queen of my world Devil girl, Devil girl I think I wanna take you home I wanna try on your clothes, uh
When she stalks, I hear the revolution In her hips, there's revolution When she walks, the revolution's coming Die Die Die Die, taste the revolution!
Devil girl, Devil girl Devil girl you are the queen of my world Devil girl, Devil girl I know I wanna take you home I wanna try on your clothes, uh
That girl thinks she's the queen of the rooftops I got news for you, she is! They say she's a fiend, but I know She is my best friend, yeah
Devil girl, devil girl Devil girl you are the queen of my world Devil girl, devil girl I know I wanna take you home I wanna try on your clothes
Love you like a sister always Soul sister, Devil girl Come and be my best friend Will you, Devil girl? I really like you I really wanna be your best friend Be my Devil girl
For the rest of the evening Salty Joe will play music for food and drink and any extra goes to any of his party who wants it.
"Well, Penumbra, do you think you can get us into that shed? That might be where we should start in the morning."
Rand will enjoy Salty's song and is especially grateful for the food and drink that Salty shares. After hanging out for an hour or so, he goes off to bed for prayer, reflection, and rest, knowing that adventure is afoot for tomorrow.
Hearing Salty's new song Penumbra gives the bard a disapproving look, "Maybe you should stick to songs about the whole group, rather than about me in particular. I'm happy to be your friend, but NO ONE is taking me home or trying on any of my clothes. Also I'm a woman, not a girl, I don't like being called a devil, and I certainly do not belong to anyone except myself."Turning to Rand she replies to his query, "I think I can probably manage to open the lock, if not there may be another way in. We will have to take a closer look when we get there."
After the old man tells the group about Raldaen Penumbra gets a worried look on her face. "I think I will go look for Raldaen. If he was looking for another place to get drinks he might have ended up at The Sleeping Giant, if so he could be in trouble. Anyone care to come with?"
(OOC: I had never heard of bikini kill. I do recognize the big iron song. The try your clothes on line makes a lot more sense now that I know who wrote it. Anyway, don't worry I am not offended, I would expect nothing less from bard than the occasional suggestive lyric. Penumbra is just reacting as I think she would. She can be a little insecure about being viewed as immature, a problem faced by many short 20 year old women, she is also a loner and though she can make friends easily she rarely lets anyone get close, and knowing that she was in fact very nearly enslaved herself means she is very sensitive about being referred to as belonging to anyone.)
Salty, soap opera style, is taken aback by Penumbra's comments but the moment is quickly replaced by his booming laugh. He goes with the Horned Woman looking for Raldaen, "I'm sorry you didn't like my song, but I will not stop writing songs about you guys. I'm sure you feel it Small Steel. This group is special. I feel like we can actually accomplish something. I haven't felt that in a while."
Carp's face beams with pride at the praise and newly-given responsibility of watching out for his mother. "Yes - protect the ones I love above all else! That's what a good adventurer does, besides slay monsters and find loot! Here, let me draw you where I found the tunnel. You'll see! I'm a clever lad!"
