Damaia; you wake on a cold stone floor, the chamber is dimly lit with a reddish glow. Four of the cots nearby appear to be occupied. The rotted smell from the trough drifts down to your nose.
You only have a moment before a gnome tumbles down a long angled path; directly into your back. Waking up the room. The first to rise, like a wave of fur, is a red haired tabaxi woman; dressed in slightly tattered robes.
She calls out in shock and fright; "They are breaking through the barrier again!" Then she looks at you two; "Oh, nope; just more meat for the grinder." She says casually with a yawn, before laying back down. The other beds stir, but none rise; each appearing to attempt to go back to sleep.
"OW!" Damaia says more out of shock that out of pain as the gnome tumbles on to her back. As the Tabaxi lays back down, Damaia stands up and asks it, "Hey wait a minute! Where are we? What do you mean more meat for the grinder? What's with this gnome? What's going on here?"
The tabaxi's hand goes up and then, as if dismissing your comments, waves towards you; "Welcome to the Goblin King's Dungeon." She says before dropping her hand back into the bedding.
She and the others continue to try to rest; but are interrupted again as a screeching and scraping noise fills the air. You all look to see a metal person slowly sliding down the sloped entrance; a black hood draped over their head.
A blue skinned man with no nose, ears, or hair sits up from their cot. "Oh, a warforged; at least we'll have access to this planet's best tech." As the blanket falls, a massive scar can be seen across his chest and arms; appearing to somewhat limit his movements.
Someone in the far cot rolls over, someone big. All you see beneath the bedding is white fur and a very long horn on the side of their head; possibly a minotaur.
From the last cot an orange furred paw moves aside her blanket; as another female tabaxi rises from bed. "Jade, we might as well wake up." She says to the red furred tabaxi. "You know that if they are dropping in more adventurers; then the Goblin King's message will be soon after. We might as well ready ourselves for when the door opens."
Damaia (I realize I haven't really put a description for her. See spoiler) blinks a few times and then shakes Fizzlewick's hand. She says, "Damaia Heartstone, half-devil student of magic, pursuer of staying alive and in training to not serve her archfiend father. I am going to call you Fusie. No, you can't object to it."
She perks up at the name "Goblin King's Dungeon." She says, "Huh, so I was kidnapped and thrown in to the Goblin King's Dungeon. That is actually convenient since I was looking for this place to begin with. This makes my job a whole lot easier." After the warforged tumbles down the shaft, Damaia says, "I'm... starting to think I'm the most ordinary person here."
Damaia has faded purple skin, dull yellow eyes and wavy black hair that goes past her shoulders and hangs between her shoulder blades. Her horns are bent backwards and her tail is slender and like that of a lizard.
She wears long slim-fit dark blue dress that goes down below her knees. Her legs are covered with tight dark violet pants. Her long dress is decorated with golden borders. A short golden metallic girdle is worn over the dress, She has a dark yellow cape. Her boots are dark violet with golden borders. (Basically she looks almost exactly like the picture in the "Tiefling" section of the PHB)
Also, she's a 5ft 10inch tall Tiefling. She is about 23 and weighs 160 lbs.
Bob manages to land lightly on his feet - especially for a nearly 8-foot tall metal Juggernaut. As he stands his head swivels to efficiently take in the entire room and evaluate each of the other occupants quickly and carefully. After determining no one in the room is overtly hostile, Bob flips back his hood and inclines his head in a strangely formal sort of acknowledgment - those of you paying attention get the sense this subtle movement is fraught with meaning.
'Greetings. I have selected to be called Bob. I am fully operational and ready for engagement.'
With that, Bob settles in against the far wall, offering him the best vantage to watch over the 4 on the cots and the 2 other newcomers. He stands at what is clearly a form of 'ready' with his weapons held lightly and his shield arm slightly in front of his body. You can see his shield appears to be mounted to his left hand and is about the size of a buckler, but a careful look shows it to be made of interlocked layers of the same metal as the rest of his body. The same can be said for the battleaxe he holds in his left hand - layers of interlocking metal form the haft and the blade.
Bob's weapons are non-magical at this point - but for flavor, I like to think of them as being archo-mechanical. No gameplay effect, but Bob can reshape his shield into any of a dozen or so standard configurations to suit his needs. Same with his longsword and battleaxe - they can each grow or shrink into other similar weapons. The character sheet has all relevant weapons and options (handaxe, dagger, longsword, battleaxe) and I'm taking full weight for each, simply treating them as if he only has access to two weapons.
'I have assessed the occupants of this room and can detect no threats - either overt or arcane. I stand ready to change my assessment based on new data. Until then, I am prepared to meet whatever denizens lurk in this lair and deliver to them the justice they deserve - no more, and no less'
With that, Bob's head resumes its careful scan of the room, its occupants and any entry points. Slow and deliberately random, the scan of his eyes and the turn of his head don't match, making it almost impossible to predict where he is looking and where he will look next - clearly a kind of sentry programming he picked up somewhere along the way.
Damaia was hoping Bob would get the joke. She mutters to herself, "Guess warforged aren't usually very funny." She then leaves Fusie to examine Bob or whatever he's doing and turns to face the door. She doesn't say anything but she stares at it to see if any hostile come through it.
Bob tilts his head down to survey the chattering Gnome and leans over to take the outstretched hand.
'Greetings, Fizzle fuse shortwick tick tock rattle twist Clocktop wrenchhead Blackfingerson' Bob pronounces the Gnome's name deliberately and with clipped precision.
'If you refer to my armaments, you are correct - they were issued to me in the closing days of the last conflict. I find them more useful in my current circumstances than many of the more dedicated elements I have been issued in the past.'
With that Bob gives what appears to be a subtle shake to the buckler and it expands into a full-sized round shield as the haft on his Battleaxe shrinks a bit - effectively shortening his grip and making the weapon more suitable to use behind the larger shield - as he does so he takes a half step forward - sending the little gnome sprawling. Seeing this, Bob sort of exhales, and the shield shrinks back to the size of a buckler and the axe shrinks to the size of handaxe. Bob clips the axe to his side, freeing his hand and bends down over the Gnome.
'My apologies Master Fizzle fuse shortwick tick tock rattle twist Clocktop wrenchhead Blackfingerson - my enthusiasm appears to have clouded my assessment of relative distance and your apparent mass and reaction time.'
Bob reaches out and carefully lifts the Gnome back onto his feet.
Drums begin to play slowly, quiet at first; but it soon picks up as several other drums begin to join in. Soon the drumming begins to drown out all other sounds, as what must be hundreds of drums are played.
The horned 'hero' tosses it's blanket over their head, rolling over once more. Both tabaxi's rise, but the red furred one immediately plops back down onto her bed. The blue skinned man struggles to get out of the cot, but then starts to make his way over to Bob. The orange furred tabaxi moves infront of the short and damaged pillar that radiates the reddish glow; motioning for you three to join her.
Damaia is wary. She doesn't move yet but says, "What are those drums?" However, her voice is drowned out by the sound. Preparing for the worst, she gets ready for an attack. Yellow mist like energy begins to swirl around her right hand (Ready Action: Eldritch Blast the first hostile that appears). She notices the tabaxi calling the adventurers to join her. She takes a few steps forward but mostly maintains distance.
The blue skinned man puts his hand where his earhole is; but he seems unable to hear over the drums. That is until an image of a Goblin wearing a crown, made entirely of red light, appears on the pillar; which causes the drums to stop almost instantly.
The image says; "Welcome to the Goblin King's Dungeon; I am the Goblin King. You are here to fight and die for my entertainment and the entertainment of my people. If you survive and make your way through the levels of the dungeon; you may encounter me and potentially reach your freedom once more. And if you don't make it, we thank you for your entertainment. Now how do I turn this thing off...oh, is it this?" Suddenly the image turns full color, not just red, but then turns back to red as he says; "Nope, that's not it, it's..." And the red image vanishes back into a reddish glow, moments before the metal door slowly begins opening.
As the door is slowly rising, you can see the leg of a humanoid laying on the floor. The orange furred tabaxi cusses to herself; "Damn, he didn't make it afterall."
Damaia says, "I ain't dying for anyone's entertainment but my own... Wait that didn't come out right!" She coughs and still holding on to her spell, stares at the opening door to see if anything comes out. She waits for a bit to see if there are any immediate hostiles she can see.
Not sure if I need to roll perception but here it is anyway: 20
Bob shakes the buckler into a full-sized tower and drops into a ready stance - holding the shield to cover him from chin to toes - his axe has been traded out for his longsword - held low and ready to strike the first thing he sees come through the door.
The body is mostly hidden by the wall next to the door; but you do see a strange blue rope laying next to them. The far door is wooden and closed, the wall next to it appears weakened, with holes looking through to the following room; from the broken masonry. Beyond that, the room appears empty; but who knows what's around the corners of the doorway.
