Walking back into the temple, it’s still very early in the morning. There are few members studying throughout the library. But given you look the part, no one seems to pay any mind.
(What are Petmorn and Matteo doing in the meantime?)
Matteo trudges with Petmorn off the road, until they can find a good place to rest and wait.
(It's snow-covered ground, right? Up on the mountain still?)
Finding a suitably sheltered and hidden place, he sets his pack down on the rocks. Do you think we should have a fire? Maybe best not to attract attention.
He looks back to the road, the way the others have gone. Magic. He shrugs. It is still very new to me, or so it seems. For many years I practised with sword and shield, and I couldn't imagine what magic must feel like. My mentor, Sir Kothric, he was a paladin too, touched by our Lord's power, and he told me I had the potential to do the same. In truth, I would have been content either way. It was a true shock when His magic first came to me one morning. And I know I will never perform the wonders that those others can. Imagine, disguising yourself to look like anyone! It seems... amazing, and incomprehensible. I am happier with my blade in my hand.
He looks at Petmorn. And what of you then? Were you never tempted by the arcane arts, or the divine?
Petorn shrugs, pulling out his whetstone as he starts to sharpen his longsword. "Not me, but my wife dabbled in it. Used to play tricks for the kids." He smiles gently. "Would make 'em laugh with sparks and childish things."
Matteo studies the older man's face for a moment. Your family. I would like very much to hear about them, if you would like to talk. I would happily bore you silly, talking about mine all day.
Petmorn's eyes sparkle as he begins to speak "Aela, my wife, was a healer. Bright red hair like a raging fire, and she sure was that. Had the best laugh around, but Lord help anyone who got on her bad side," he chuckles "I did that a lot. Then there was Phoebe, my little girl. Inherited her mother's spunk. Always wanted to be everyone's best friend. And finally Ral, the boy. He was a quiet kid, but so sweet and gentle. He would have been a healer for sure." Petmorn looks down, sword long forgotten in his hands. "They were everything to me."
Matteo smiles as Petmorn speaks, hearing the joy and loss in the man's words. Aela, and Phoebe, and Ral. Good names. Phoebe sounds a little like my sister Alitra; nothing can stop her when she gets one of her crazy ideas. He shakes his head at the memories, and then pauses for a long while before speaking again. From what you say, they are lost to you. What happened?
Petmorn looks up at Matteo with grim eyes. "Demons" he says "Demons happened. I only left for an hour.....just an hour for something as stupid as the market. Can you believe that?" He shakes his head. "I saw the smoke, it was billowing so far into the sky. I dropped everything, I ran faster than I ever have. My Aela, she was.....she was...." Petmorn chokes back a sob. "I held her hand....as she died. And my kids.......my little ones....I never found them. Just a stupid necklace I gave Phoebe for her birthday." At this, Petmorn reaches into the collar of his jerkin and pulls out a small round purple gemstone with a jagged crack running down the middle. He stares at it for a long moment, quiet. A stray tear traces its way through the dirt and grime on his face.
Once again, Matteo takes a long time to respond, staring away into the distance, then at his feet, knowing he did not have the right words, that there were no right words. In the end, he says, I am sorry, my friend. Those creatures are an abomination, an affront to everything Holy. None must be spared. His hand goes momentarily to his sword as he lets the righteous anger fill him, but then he relaxes, and lets the feeling subside.
He sits silently, watching the sky, thinking of his family and how much he would like to see them.
Petmorn slips the gemstone back into his collar. "I fight for them. I was promised by our Lord a second chance, and I'll do whatever it takes to see them again. Whatever it takes."
Matteo nods. We will succeed. We have already achieved more than any Hand in the past. When we do, when our Lord walks upon this world and claims His rightful throne, you will have your second chance. The paladin's voice now fills with religious fervour. And His coming will mean an end to Chaos, an end to demons walking upon the world. They would not dare to enter His kingdom. We will save so many families, to live their lives under His law, and His peace.
He pauses, once again willing himself calm. He looks again at Petmorn, a little embarrassed. Though we still have a long road to walk, I suppose. I wonder how the others are doing.
Risha is noticeably tense as they enter the temple, fiddling with her goggles constantly. As they go into the library, Risha mutters "Shall we try and find the section about Oghma's enemies?" She looks for information on Asmodeus and his shards.
Drax would once again hold his black talon in his other hand while looking throughthe books. Hoping to get any kind of signal from the dark lord as he looked through the scrolls and tomes....
(So I am unsure how the temple is setup. when we enter is there a desk or informational area or is it just books?)
Sorry, so there are actually three temples. One for Milil, Oghma, and Deneir. The first building : the troubadour hall focused on Bards and music. Kind of like a practice center but filled with lounges and cushions to share stories.
The middle building is the library (Oghma) there isn’t really a desk area as it’s merged into the temple. So the doors quite literally open up to a circular room with rows and rows of books and tomes. There are areas to study from and rooms are upstairs. In the middle of the library there is a simple brown door which leads to the headmasters office and the place where they just set free the aspect of Asmodeus that was being held there. Upon leaving the headmaster warned against fighting any further and that we was aware of who they were and what they’ve done.
The group didn’t quite investigate the temple of Deneir before.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Aether
While the atmosphere is noticeably different, why anyone would just let anyone access their knowledge stores baffles him, Aether does get a sense of familiarity being in a place of knowledge and study. Taking a moment to get a feel for the sorting and indexing of the records here he makes his way to sections on Devils and the Hells. Pulling books to look through that specifically deal with Asmodeous and/or artifacts. Taking any thing he finds he will lead his companions to an empty room upstairs for some more privacy. Once he has finished looking at the first set of tomes he will will take 10 minutes focusing and tracing sigils in the air in front of him. "Eacigam eredneherped."Then he will walk around the entire place starting with the section on necromancy if there is one and grab any books that give off an arcane aura.
Investigation : 18 (advantage roll if my background and associated feature would come into play : 28)
Then a ritual casting of Detect Magic and looking for any magic auras but especially school of necromancy auras.
Also he is trying to track time he has left on his disguise self spell.
Risha through an hour of research finds that Oghma while being considered a “good” diety power is not one that has enemies. Oghma is a scribe, a story teller, keeper of histories. It does not interfere with events and the other gods. It exists to ensure the story goes on.
Drax after a second time of studying in the library (with Aether’s help)finds that most of what’s here in the open access area is mostly studies, dissertations, oral histories transcribed to paper. There is one brief tale that talks about aspects of Asmodeus. Each aspect takes on a trait of the Devil King. Anger, Greed, , Wrath, Lust, Joy, Law, are the ones listed. Some are guard and hidden in temples, while some were almost drawn to areas where each aspect fits in. The original scattering is said to have crashed like a falling star, leaving a crater in the earth. Unfortunately it doesn’t have precise locations, but it makes it seem that the aspects won’t always be in temples, but vary well could be in cities or natural spots as well.
