So I had this idea for a campaign for a while now and before I committed on actually running it (I haven't planned anything beyond the basic premise), I wanted to check if this was something that people would even be interested in.
I heard a bunch of stories where a DM tried to run an anime plot in Dnd and it backfired horribly thanks to rail-roading. This game me an idea for a anime themed campaign. I'm posting this to see what people think of it and if there even is enough people who think this is a descent idea and wouldn't mind playing in something like this.
So, the story/ setting is the plot of DBZ starting from the Saiyan Saga and ending at the Buu Saga. The players would play random powerful beings on Earth who would either not be related to the main cast of DBZ or have very loose connections (such as distant cousin or Capsule Corp employee or neighbor etc). They would be doing whatever when Raditz lands on Earth and the stuff that happened on the main show starts happening. Instead of strictly following the shows plot however, I want make some changes to better fit with the mechanics of 5E such as having a secret underground market that sells weapons and armor that are basically reskins of 5Es equipment; having reskins of the 5Es classes and banning the Wish spell because the whole point of collecting the Dragon Balls is so you can cast Wish. The biggest change I want to make is that the PCs actions can and will change the course of the story. Due to the player's actions, entire arcs might get added or removed. Maybe the players manage to kill Cell before he has a chance to gain perfect form; maybe they made a new enemy who came back as the main villain of their own arc; maybe a character that was supposed to die, didn't and now different stuff happens etc.
Again, I haven't prepared anything besides the base premise and it's been years since I've watched DBZ (Lost interest in the series after the Buu Saga and so didn't watch Dragon Ball, DB GT or Super) and if there's enough interest, I will have to go back and skim over the plot of Z and make notes on how and where some changes can/should be made. I'm not ready to run this right now is what I'm saying but I will get the campaign ready if there's enough interest. So, what do think? Good idea or bad idea?
