You continue on into the early afternoon following the long lost remains of the road for another 2 miles, which leads almost straight westward. Just short of each standard mile, another broken marker stands.
OCC: I updated the summary. You are traveling rather slowly due to the terrain, keeping an eye open for the surroundings as well as the remains of the old road. You have another 6 hours or so of daylight/travel.
Corum looks over at Navi, Think we should keep track of whatever unit of measurement they used to place these markers? Also I can try scouting out ahead and looking for a good place to camp down for the night? I know we have several hours of daylight but in unfamiliar territory might good to try and find a place that is safe while there is still enough light to look around.
Navi would nod to Corum, pretty sure she has been recording the markers, but just in case, she'd double check and make sure she does.
"I aint gunna argue with yeh if you want teh scout ahead. At least I'll know yeh found something when I hear a familiar scream." She'd wink. Honestly though, she would appreciate him scouting out an area to rest.
As you move away from statues the sounds of small animals and birds return. With the exceptions a few detours around lone hills, the road continues straight west for 6 miles.
Backtracking a little, you choose a small flat hill, a few hundred feet from the road. Its northern and eastern side are pretty steep and a deep pool of standing water adds to its protection.
"Here seems good for me." Georges said, noting the pool and smiling. "My estate used to have a pond this size in the hunting grounds. I'd practice my mandolin there often."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Fair 'nough." Navi would survey the area. She'd be looking through the local fauna for possible food or medical herbs; evidence of possible game in the area; and drinkable water to refill their waterskins.
Navi is able to find several berries and leaves which have minor medical value when properly dried and made into tea to treat things like muscle and headaches. Given the size of the snake and mantis you encountered, there must be some large game around, and there are tracks indicating so, the immediate area is devoid. There is skittering sounds when things turn quick, but based on tracks the animals are the size of squirrel's and chipmunks. Rattling in the forest canopy, points to life being in the higher branches.
Starting a fire for the evening, and keeping it going is actually a more difficult process, as what wood is scattered about is wet from the rains, and the trees themselves are very sappy (is the even a word?).
Night approaches, and the light rapidly dims (thanks to the forest) the volume and variety of forest sounds increases dramatically. Without starlight, and with only a dim silvery light filtering through the trees it becomes almost totally dark quickly. Then, scattered here and there, clusters of dim green lights appear on the forest floor.
Navi would make her best effort at recording the plants and tracks descriptions in some notes on the map. Then she'd gather some of the berries and leaves before returning to camp. She'd take her post for watch, taking in the environment.
Georges practices a few chords and things on his mandolin for a moment before then choosing to take a small stroll himself, feeling a bit restless. As they had all prepped already, there wasn't much else for him to do but kill time until he felt his eyes grow heavier. He decided to sketch the scenery in his journal as he walked, just to record the beauty of the environment.
The first part of the night passes without incident. As the middle of the night approaches, you here the beating of many wings and the screeching calls of the flying lizards you encountered before. There are other sounds in the night, some close very close. Sometime past midnight, you are awoken by a rumbling growl far in the distance. The rumble is so loud and so deep that you feel the vibrations (think of sitting on the amp of a bass guitar) rolling through you.
As the night stretches on, the moving light of the moon diminishes and the phosphorescent light scattered in the forest goes out one by one, till only the flames of your fire remain. Only a bit before dawn, the fine mist which have heralded the last two mornings returns.
Despite the noises in the distance, and a few more rumbling growls and shrieks of unknown animals, the rest of the night passes without incident.
Ulrich will wake up and do some stretching before he attempts to make a fire and morning meal for everyone.
Survival: 7
After he is done he will look at what he makes and decide better of it and not eat what he made and just toss it out, a ways from camp due to the smell.
"Yea so anyone else better at cooking food than I appear to be?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Navi will wake with her usual morning yawn and exaggerated stretch. She'd join the boys trying to scavenge for berries in the strangest spots. She'll pull out some berries she found last night to share. " 'ere. I'll show yeh what they look like and where you're more likely to find them. Try em." Navi would encourage them to try the berries as she leads them around, pointing out the local plants she found them on, sharing some of her survival tactics. Perhaps next time they might have some advantage when looking for some.
Survival: 7
(Guess I picked them all last night. We maybe find a berry each? lol! )
