The party discovered that an unknown group (several Lizardfolk, judging by the reptilian footprints found at the scene) was removing the cult's shipment of stolen treasures from the Carnath Roadhouse's strong room via a secret tunnel. Jamna Gleamsilver stayed behind to find out whether this event was just another step in the cult's plan or if the cultists were, themselves, victims of theft.
Following the tunnel, the party found a marked trail which stretched for miles through the Mere of Dead Men. At the end of the trail, an unoccupied (but not abandoned) campsite capped the trail and abutted a large river. After exploring the lean-tos, canoes, and stone pedestal in the center of the clearing, the heroes chose to take refuge in the marsh and trees surrounding the cleared campsite, awaiting the return of whoever or whatever called the site home.
Just as the sun was setting, a large group of Lizardfolk rounded a bend in the river, their canoes aimed for the shores of the campsite. Having the element of surprise, the heroes opted for a diplomatic approach and, after a painful first response from the Lizardfolk, were mistaken for cultists.
The Lizardfolk, apparently serving "those who hail the dragon", became remarkably subservient for such a rough and tumble race. They took watch, cleaned clothes, and even caught fish while the party took a long rest. After a breakfast of freshly smoked fish, the Lizardfolk offered to take the party to “the castle" and other cultists.
The Lizardfolk help load the party and their gear into canoes, distributing one party member and two lizardfolk to each of four canoes with a lone Lizardfolk staying behind at camp. You settle in for what sounds like it will be a long trip up river. It occurs to everyone independently that, if you speak Draconic or should either of your lizardly companions speak Common, this might be a good time to surreptitiously gather some intel on the Cult's activities.
Nigel nonchalantly asks his lizard companions how they came to worship the One True God.
[OOG: before I have the lizardfolk respond, what specifically does Nigel say? Does he use the phrase "worship the One True God" or just something similar?]
I wear my stolen cultist mask and ramble excitedly in common about everything I learned from the cultists who tried to indoctrinate me. I'm hoping my enthusiasm will get any common-speaking lizardfolk to join in.
"Say there chaps, how did you all come to...to, uh hail the dragon?"
It is immediately obvious that the Lizardfolk in Nigel's canoe find this an awkward and uncomfortable question, but why is not clear. The two Lizardfolk eye each other for a moment with meaningful but indecipherable looks before the one behind Nigel replies, "We serve the Dragon Kneelers, but are not of your clutch*." After a lengthy pause, the same Lizardfolk adds, "Our work is rewarded with steel and magic."
*[Nigel knows enough Draconic to recognize this is the Lizardfolk's closest equivalent to "brotherhood"]

The two Lizarfolk in Roc's canoe appear to occasionally take deep breaths, clench their jaws, and otherwise show signs of attempting to stoicly control their irritation. After 30 minutes of this, they begin softly growling to each other in Draconic (or what Roc assumes to be Draconic).
Roc, oblivious continues talking about the virtues of the cult until he runs out of things to say. Then he goes abruptly quiet and looks at his annoyed companions in confusion.

A quick recap of our last live session:
The party discovered that an unknown group (several Lizardfolk, judging by the reptilian footprints found at the scene) was removing the cult's shipment of stolen treasures from the Carnath Roadhouse's strong room via a secret tunnel. Jamna Gleamsilver stayed behind to find out whether this event was just another step in the cult's plan or if the cultists were, themselves, victims of theft.
Following the tunnel, the party found a marked trail which stretched for miles through the Mere of Dead Men.
975 XP was awarded to each PC.
The Lizardfolk are ready to depart for the castle whenever the party is set. Does anyone wish to do anything specific before climbing into the canoes?
Nigel is ready for the next leg of the adventure!
Roc is good to go
Cressida is good to go, though she has misgivings about trusting creatures in thrall to the dragon cult.
The Lizardfolk help load the party and their gear into canoes, distributing one party member and two lizardfolk to each of four canoes with a lone Lizardfolk staying behind at camp. Nigel plays the familiar strains of "Enter Lizardman" on his lute.
Roc, oblivious continues talking about the virtues of the cult until he runs out of things to say. Then he goes abruptly quiet and looks at his annoyed companions in confusion.
After an hour on the river, the Lizardfolk in each of the canoes suddenly go tense and appear to sniff the air. Everyone make a Perception check!
