[[ Are there areas ahead that he is more familiar with, or less; I'm looking here for a differentiator for places to act, if he chose to. eg. an old haunt he knows really well, vs. an area he knows is well lit and/or well patrolled by guards etc? Even just an area he knows is less populated or poorly lit.
[[The Western End District is an area that Brand knows well, but not in a good way. It is the home ground of a criminal gang called the Axemen who are very protective of their turf. He has been there before and might be recognised by some of the members as being associated with a rival gang. Of some relevance to this, and If you haven't already seen it, you might like to take a look at the article 'Changes to the rogue class' in the Homebrew rules section on the world site. It has a slight effect on Brand in that Thieves Cant is not a universal language, which I have always considered somewhat silly anyway.]]
My impression of quarters of the city so far is that they are about 20 minutes across; is that correct?
[[No. The different sections of the city tend to conform with the tributaries of the river and tend to be shorter going between tributaries and longer in the direction of the tributaries.]]
Also, the next bridge you said has guards. Is that normal? Or is it just between quarters?
[[Not normal. There are guard posts in various places throughout the city. This one just happens to be near the bridge.]]
You said the next bridge after this one is 5-ish minutes again; is it also likely to be guarded? ]]
[[No. I was wondering if I had misunderstood what you meant. It was five minutes to the nearest bridge and about the same distance to be in earshot. It is much further to the next bridge. Travelling south, in the direction of the Brand estate, the next place you cross the river is the Southern Crossing where the barge is. Travelling west, you pass through the middle-class residential area and then through the Western End District to cross back across the river to join the western road to Galth that parallels the northern bank of the main run of the river before it breaks up into its delta.]]
The closer they approach the bridge, and the guard post that is near to it, the more the men become quieter and resume their roles as two drunks being escorted home.

[[They are using a hooded lantern, which gives them dim light out to 60' (bright light to half that distance) when fully open. Brand's Darkvision also has a range of 60'. [[The Ray of Sickness capability of the Stone of Far Reaching doesn't require a to-hit. It is a Constitution save versus a DC of 15 (i.e. based on Brand's proficiency and Intelligence bonuses with him effectively reaching invisibly inside the victim and trying to squeeze something vital). Sneak attack normally wouldn't apply in such a case, but I might allow it if the timing is good and the victim were in a situation that they would take extra damage because they had been interfered with at a critical moment (e.g., falling down stairs), which would mean the Sneak Attack damage might still apply even if they succeeded with their Con save. [[Against a lantern not in somebody's hands, yes. But not if someone were holding it. [[ Had an interesting thought...assuming sacks contain money, can brand jiggle them? Will he become visible? Are there good hiding places? ]]
[[One of the constraints of the Invisibility spell is that an attack will make the caster visible. Mage Hand says it specifically can't be used to do an attack. Therefore, by definition, anything you are allowed to do with Mage Hand won't spoil your Invisibility to fail. So I would say jiggling a sack (if it is less than 10 pounds in weight; the weight limit for Mage Hand [50 coins weigh a pound.]) won't spoil the Invisibility. However, if you want to use the Stone of Far Reaching to achieve a cantrip level effect that does do damage and requires a to-hit roll, then the Invisibility would be broken, which means the re-skinned Vicious Mockery I suggested wouldn't cause the Invisibility to be broken. However, I think the involvement of something that can't be seen moving objects around so that people could possibly hurt themselves is something of a giveaway.]]
[[With regard to hiding places, I can think of two. There is a drop from the level of the road to the river of about four feet, which means Brand could try to hide on the steep river bank. Also, the guard post itself would have some places where Brand could hide.]]
