The party takes their positions and after a quick final check of their equipment, push off into the darkening city streets of Neverwinter. They pass by a few townsfolk who observe them curiously. The seven-foot tall firbolg clad in chainmail raises a few eyebrows. The hulking bugbear rouses looks of suspicion and concern, even though the townsfolk cannot see Ronk’s face - but his long, hairy arms and claw-like hands and feet give some clue to his goblinoid heritage.
A few moments later, they exit through the city gates and are out in the wild following the Trade Road south. They travel uneventfully for a couple of days, slowing occasionally to allow Rigel and Garet to forage for food to help preserve their meager supply of rations. A creek and a natural spring provide them with fresh water with which they refill their water skins.
As their third day of travel begins, the adventurers take up their chosen positions and veer east onto the Triboar Trail to make their final push into Phandalin. After about two hours, they begin to enter a thickly-wooded area. Up ahead, Rigel spots what looks like a pair of dead horses lying in the road situated in between steep embankments on either side.

Rigel holds his hand up, palm towards the wagon in an attempt to signal to the wagon to stop. Pointing first to his eyes and then to the road ahead he indicates his intent to investigate the area ahead. He pauses for a moment to both survey the area and to attempt to focus his senses on the surrounding forest. He makes an exaggerated show of knocking an arrow to show he's expecting trouble followed by slowly and cautiously approaching the horses.

Vanzaren stops the cart, "Well then that looks unpleasant. And suspicious." He hops off the cart and starts shifting through a pouch on his hip, pulling various components out as he follows behind Rigel at a distance, eventually pulling out a small vial of water and pouring part of it into his hand, rolling it around until it forms a ball in the palm before looking up and watching Rigel's approach.

Ronk had stopped wearing the basket-like hood on his head once they were well enough away from civilization, but kept it handy just in case. The cart blocks his view of what's ahead, but he gets the notion it's not good from how his companions are acting. He closes to within about 25 feet of the cart and starts looking around, focusing on the rear and flanks of their group as he slowly draws his sword. "I don't think I like that you don't like this..." Perception: 12

UNDISCLOSED ROLL: 7
Rigel finds the the horses have several arrows with black fletchings sticking out of the horses. Nearby, he spies a burgundy leather map case with the initials “GR” embossed on the front. The case is empty.
Just then, a small group of goblins springs their ambush on the party. Vanzaren and Garet notice the attackers, but Ronk, Elisa and Rigel are surprised.

Vanzaren looks to the goblin that just tried to attack Rigel, along with the one closest to that one and begins to chant arcane words that sound almost like a song as 3 bolts of force go shoot from his hand, 2 towards the goblin that attacked Rigel and 1 towards Goblin 1. The two darts hit the goblin in the chest and head, sending it flying backwards before falling to the ground dead.
Magic Missile: 1st. 5 2nd. 4 3rd. 2Darts 1 and 2 at Goblin 2. Dart 3 at Goblin 1.

Rigel yells "AMBUSH!" Seeing the two magical bolts strike the Goblin that fired on him, he turns his attention to Goblin #1. As he watches the arrow fly, he cries out in the Goblins native tongue "DIE! You filthy wretch!"

Two more goblins leap out from behind a large shrub and rush Ronk with swords drawn:

Goblin #3: Attack: 18 vs. Ronk’s AC 15 Damage: 5
Ronk, caught by surprise, takes two vicious stabs in the back! His knees go weak and he falls to the ground. Both goblins look shocked once they realize they have attacked a bugbear!

Garet moves into the free space between Ronk, Goblin and the cart.
He taps his sacred wooden emblem (attached to his shield ) with fist in which he holds his mace.
He points with end of the mace at the goblin near him
"G..g..go away!
(OOC: Thorn Whip cantrip. DNDBeyond tells me Garet has +5 to attack)

As a bonus action he will cast Healing Word. Garet will touch Ronk and say "live"

You see black space in front of you and white skeleton face steering at you. It waits. Then suddenly it grins, shouts and disappears. White wooden unicorn toy appears in its place. You open your eyes and you hear in your mind soft voice "live" which mixes with Garet voice saying the same word.
Garet intervenes before the goblins can do further harm to the the bugbear. His thorny whip lashes out at one of the goblins who ducked just in time As the whip cracks above his head. The cleric’s divine shout pulls Ronk from the brink of death and he revives as he feel the stab wounds in the back heal closed.
(OOC: Ronk is prone, standing up will cost half of his movement on his next turn.)

"... Ow... OW." Ronk stands and turns, glaring down at the goblins with a mixture of hurt and anger. "OW!" He bellows as he lashes out at the goblin to his right with his sword, and as part of his strike's follow-through smashes a closed fist down on the goblin to his left's head.
Ronk leapt from his prone position pulling his short sword from its scabbard...the blade flashed in front of the goblin’s eyes and an instant later his head had been liberated from his body. As he stuck his landing with all the gracefulness of a circus performer, he brought a heavy fist down upon the head of the other goblin. Or rather THROUGH the head of the other goblin...
(OOC: END OF COMBAT...spectacular finish for Ronk who literally one-shot’d both goblins that kidney-stabbed him. Karma’s a *****!!)
