Pizazz's Ravenloft and Beyond

With Lionel ahead of the group, Olin, Mordekai, and Meepo rush out into the dark pre-dawn morning where a massive tree is crushing it's way through the vineyard.  Ahead, Lionel holds up his blade as he nears the tree, "I CHALLENGE THEE!  YOU SHALL FACE ME AND BE DESTROYED!"  The tree looks up. Wis save: 19.   Then it stalks forward to join the combat.

Everyone roll init.   Tree init: 5

"This does not look good." Olin says, hefting his staff and shield.

Initiative, with guidance, 16

(I have to run to a meeting, so I'll tell you what I do on my turn now)

Olin casts bless at 2nd level, getting everyone in the party. Then he casts spiritual weapon near the tree and attacks.

The tree ignored his challenge and Lionel changed tactics: Searing Smite  Attack: 14 Damage: 11  +  3 fire damage + 13 from Divine Smite

(Olin's initiative beat out Meepo and Mordekai, so both of you be sure and add your 1d4 to your first attack roll, then everyone adds it going forward (until I inevitably roll poorly on concentration, of course))

The tree does NOT ignore Lionel's challenge as far as Lionel knows since it stomps forward into combat.  As Lionel's blade slams into the spongy wooden body, a spray of red ichor bursts out.  The flame sizzles out almost immediately, but the fire coated blade does it's damage as a blackened smear and deep chunk of spongy wood is cut from the things side.  It tries to clobber Lionel with it's huge fists, as well as it's roots that slam at him. 

A branch tries to clobber him. Attack: 19 Damage: 21

Then another. Attack: 18 Damage: 14

The roots slam forward, the things moving light spastic snakes trying to wrap around Lionel's limbs. To Hit: 17.  To Hit: 16.  

Lionel manages to leap and dodge as the roots try to entangle him, and ducks as a massive branch swings over his head, but gets smashed as another branch sends him stumbling, his skull ringing and a spray of blood issues from his mouth and nose. 

Everyone else can be as far or as close to the tree as they want to be at the start of combat. Olin charges up, swinging his glowing staff at the tree but it misses as a root slaps upwards and deflects the blow. 

Mordekai, Meepo, your turns.

Mordekai casts Hex on the tree (trying to stay max distance away, so 90ft) and then sends an Eldritch Blast at it. (Also, naming WIS on the Hex, so it has disadvantage on WIS checks) 

Attack: 26 + 3 from bless. Damage: 20 (ignore that!) + 5 from Hex.

Lionel grunted and shook his head - rushing like this in the battle, not waiting for any support or even making a coherent plan, shameful mistake for rookie, the stage he though he passed long ago. Sadly, he was out of options - one more hit and there would be no one between that tree and the others. He concentrated for a fraction of a second (Healing Hands self full 20 points) and swung his sword in the tree direction (Channel Divinity: Vow of Enmity - advantage on future attacks).

Meepo stays back and sends a crossbow bolt at the tree...

(Meepo, I assume your 23 hits, but don't forget you all have bless and can add 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws!)
(A positioning note, I had run within 60ft to cast spiritual weapon but was planning to stay a little bit back and out of melee for the moment. I'd say 20ft away from the tree, positioned between Lionel and the Meepo and/or Mordekai.)

"Whatever unnatural magic is perverting these plants, we've got to end it!" Olin yells, seeing Lionel deflect most blows but almost brought down by the one that hits. "But first, lets end this tree!" Olin directs his spectral oak branch to attack the tree, then points at it with his staff. The sound of a distant bell tolls in the tree's senses.

EDIT: For toll the dead the tree is supposed to make a wis save. I forgot that and rolled for the attack... whoops!

A crossbow bolt slams into the creatures spongy body, blood spurting out from it's wound. Olin's weapon slams into , leaving a crushed section seeping thick ichor. 

Then it lays into Lionel. 

First Swing Attack: 11 Damage: 17

Second Branch Attack: 29 Damage: 22

Grasping roots: 26.    Grasping Roots:  27.

(OOC: This thing has barely rolled over 10...someone is super lucky!!! Even if it doesn't feel like it!) 

A branch thuds heavily into Lionel, whose wounds were just closing, bashing him heavily, but the rest of the creatures attacks flail uselessly at Lionel as he brushes them away with his shield and dodges. 

Next turn everyone!

OOC: Somehow 19 damage does not feel like particular luck at all. If Lionel survives, he will learn his lesson.

Healing up was a surprisingly (to guy himself) smart move - Lionel survived yet another blow. But now it was his turn! Attack: 20 Damage: 9  (+ 1 from Blessing)

Thankful that Lionel is able to keep the tree at bay for now, Olin sends a blast of radiant energy streaking towards it, starting the tree glowing if it hits, then smashes at it again with his spectral branch.

 Mordekai will keep himself at a healthy distance (90ft if still realistic, but preferably at least 50) and continue with Eldritch Blast 

Attack: 22 + 4 for Bless. Damage: 21 + 6 Hex

Edit: I did it again! Ignore the d20 damage roll and use 6 plus the Hex instead! 

Meepo sends another crossbow bolt in.

A blast of magic from Mordekai, a blast of bright glowing damage from Olin, and slash from Lionel and a bolt that jams breaks off a huge root batter the massive spongy thing that leaks thick blood from numerous wounds as it's huge form continues to thrash about. 

It swings a heavy branch, sweeping down across the battle at Lionel, the lone warrior in melee, a single small form in shining armor taking on a massive evil rotting blood filled tree creature. 

Branch Attack: 25 Damage: 14

2nd Branch Attack: 24 Damage: 17

Roots: 25.  15.  

Lionel's luck runs out as the first branch smashes him off his feet, sending him flying through the air to land in the vines, his limp body still.  

With Lionel out of the way it rushes forward at the next victim, Olin, it swings a massive branch down with a heavy thud as Olin nimbly deflects the blow with his shield.  But roots slam out and wrap around Olin, grappling him and holding him tight, and pulls him towards a massive jaw of broken wood and sharp shards of wood.   (DC 15 to escape the grapple, uses your action)

Bite attack: 14 Damage: 22

The things powerful jaws crush around Olin as he gasps in pain, wrapped in rubbery roots while being chewed on. 

(Olin, you take 9 damage from the grapple at the start of your turn).
