I recently acquired a copy of the Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron in preparation for the new Eberron campaign supplement that will be released later this month. What I read inspired me to create a PbP campaign set in the world of Eberron. The story is still in development, but I decided that I’d begin the recruitment process right away.
This will not be a typical Forgotten Realms adventure. Eberron is a world of neo-noir intrigue, swashbuckling action, and pulp adventure. I STRONGLY encourage you to get your own copy of The Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron and read through the first few chapters of you haven’t already done so. The pages are stuffed with epic art, character inspiration, and the history of Eberron.
When creating a character, please do a little homework to find out how your character’s race and class fit into the world of Eberron. I don’t wish to limit character creativity in any way, but I do ask that the characters fulfill Eberron’s flavor requirements.
D&D is a a role-playing game, an aspect which I find is often forgotten or overlooked. I encourage you to give your character depth and interesting attributes.
If I haven’t scared you off by now with homework and character restrictions, we’re off to a good start. At the risk of sounding cliched, I want to emphasize that the point of D&D is to have fun. I’m not going to worry about how much ten gold pieces weigh for the purposes of encumbrance, or count the number of arrows a character has in their quiver. Let’s not bog down the game with trivialities.
With all that out of the way, let’s begin! Please fill out the following character application and post it to this thread. I will leave the thread open for a few days and then select 4-6 characters.
No homebrew, 1st level, good or neutral alignments only, milestone level advancement, standard array or point buy ability score systems. By all means, make full use of the Eberrron races and dragonmarks.

Race/Class: Human (Dragonmarked - Sentinel) Fighter (going EK)
Background: Marine
Backstory: Urmdir grew up in a poor fishing village along the Karrnath coast with his younger brother Siggur. He joined the military at a young age and learned to be a marine. Eventually he was placed alongside his brother on the Stormwraith, a fast-strike skiff crewed by a a mix of races and undead. The ship's Blood-witch, Magran, helped him discover and master his Dragonmark. Their missions were fast, efficient, and deadly. Urmdir learned to define himself by how well he followed orders. When the ship would creep silently under the cover of conjured fog towards the next target, he often wondered if he was really undead like the animated corpses around him. Urmdir was loosing his mind. His only tether to life was his brother, Siggur, and the time they spent together.
When Siggur got news of his pending promotion and acceptance into the Rekkenmark Acedemy, Urmdir was overcome by jealousy and despair. He knew that alone he would go mad. He spoke to Magran about Siggur. He convinced Magran to place Siggur in an experimental program run by The Seekers of the Divinity Within. The next time the Stormwraith docked, Siggur was taken. Overcome with regret, Urmdir left immediately to find and free his brother, placing his life in forfeit for desertion.
Urmdir watched the Citadel of Ascension for 6 months disguised as a manure salesman and planned his rescue of Siggur. The compound was guarded tightly, and every day Urmdir risked being discovered. Everything changed the day of the Mourning. The Citadel burst into a hive of activity for people and airships. Just as Urmdir was drawing his weapons from beneath the manure to free his brother or die trying, he saw Siggur walking in a daze outside the compound, headed South. He forced Siggur under the manure and fled. They have on the run ever since - hiring out as mercenaries, caravan guards, and even pirates. Urmdir has never told Siggur of his betrayal.
What nation does your character call home? Urmdir was raised in Karrnath but his desertion means he cannot return.
Did your character participate in the Last War? If so, in what capacity? Urmdir served as a marine alongside his younger brother Siggur aboard the Stormwraith, a fast-strike skiff crewed by a a mix of races and undead. He never questioned orders and regrets several missions he participated in.
What effect did the Last War have on your character? Urmdir always followed orders in the Last War. He nearly lost his humanity in doing so.
What effect did The Mourning have on your character? Urmdir was deeply troubled by the Mourning. His ship had raided the Cyran coasts on numerous occasions, and he feels profound guilt for making their short lives even worse. He suspects the Mourning was somehow caused by Karrnath.
Race/Class: Simic Hybrid (formerly elf) / Druid (going circle of spores)
What nation does your character call home? Born in Valenar but lived and worked in Cyre many years
Background: currently Simic Scientist (dont have eberron myself so would take house agent for cannith in game as researcher)
Backstory
Zhatar was born before the last war as an elf and loved to research life and death. It was hard for him to make a living as much other than a herbalist before the war. But once the last war started it only took a few years before he found work in a workshop of House Cannith. The workshop was not just researching arcana but also ways to shift the tide of war. This brought Zhatar work as he got to study effects on creatures using alchemy and his knowledge of nature.
Fascinated by the effects Zhatar worked day and night to find out ways to sustain life by any means. Exhausted by the long hours perhaps mistakes were made but Zhatar was convinced he was on the verge of a great finding. Then the mourning happened, twisting and transforming him in the Simic Hybrid he is now. After the painfull transformation he fell unconsious and when waking up found most others dead or gone. Fear took him as he ran and kept running untill he was outside Cyre.
After a few years he accepted his new body. However he always wanted to find out what happened, study the unnatural effects and to get back his lost research.
Did your character participate in the Last War? If so, in what capacity?
Zhatar worked in one of the arcane workshops as a researcher for House Cannith
What effect did the Last War have on your character?
The war gave Zhatar a lot of work and resources for his research. Safely working in the workshop away from the battlefront he could study things that might be frowned upon during peacetimes. But war brought more priority to unusual projects.
What effect did The Mourning have on your character?
Being in Cyre during the mourning caused his body to shift into a Simic Hybrid. This mutation caused great fear in Zhatar and after the mourning occured he left his workshop and made his way outside what was once Cyre. After coming to peace with his mutation curiosity grows as he wants to find out what caused this and if he could harnass its powers.
Backstory: He was raised by a maternal aunt and uncle. His father abandoned him and his mother died. He grew up without a permanent home, moving a lot. He was always bored, so he turned to crime to pass the time and discovered he was quite good at it. He's a sucker for a shiny bauble or a sack of coins, as long as he can get his hands on it without risking life and limb. He found that he could get into and out of places without being noticed. So he became a spy for Trust, gathering intel and just awaiting orders.
What nation does your character call home? Zilargo Did your character participate in the Last War? If so, in what capacity? Yes, as a spy for the trust. What effect did the Last War have on your character? He learned quickly that everyone has a secret, and it is worth a lot of money to know those secrets. What effect did The Mourning have on your character? It did not impact him personally; just more busy work from the Trust....so more work more gold.
Background: Faction Agent (A network of Changeling spies and assassins that work for the highest paying groups)
Backstory: Gah was born in the city of Sharn, his family consisting of a Changeling guild of thieves, spies and assassins who used their shape changing abilities to serve whomever paid them the most. From a young age, Gah and his twin brother San trained to master various skills from playing instruments, combat, acting and the like to be able to fulfill whatever roll was needed of them. While his twin showed much more promise in the martial training, Gah was better at using his words to manipulate people and to earn their trust by taking an unassuming form.
Once they were old enough to be of help with earning their guild and family money, Gah and San were sent to aid all sides of the war by acting as nessengers, spies and if the money was good enough assassins. Right before the Mourning happened, Gah was made to deliver a message outside of Cyre while San was to go deeper into the county to kidnap the son of military leader. That was the last time Gah saw San. In the following four years, Gah has done his best to hide from his family by never showing his true form and keeping to two identities that he had developed during his time serving as a spy.
What nation does your character call home: Gah was born and raised in the city of Sharn.
Did your character participate in the Last War? If so, in what capacity: Gah served as a spy for all sides, using his abilities as a Changeling to move between them when he needed to.
What effect did the Last War have on your character? : After the last war, Gah lost his taste for being a spy and instead has spent the last four years living as a bard. Usually he takes the form of a half elf he had killed in the last war and goes by the name Calanon Oakenshield or a human bard that simply calls himself Swift fingers.
What effect did The Mourning have on your character?: Gah lost many of his friends who were in Cure at the time and barely escaped being caught in it by less then twenty four hours, making him much more cautious and wary of involving himself in affairs of politics. His twin brother San was in the country and was never found.

Rekuberk Onc Level 8 | Half Orc | Barbarian (The Tales of the Fellowship of the White Cloaks)
Backstory (This campaign is set in 998 YK, four years after the Last War) He was a soldier during the last battle, when the Mourning happened, the rest of his unit was killed, without orders he roamed the battlefield seeking meaning when he had a vision of the Becoming God. Since then he has wandered the kingdoms looking for anything that might help him build the new god and spreading the word of his god to other warforged and, recently, others disenfranchised by the conflicts.
What nation does your character call home? Mournlands/Cyre
Did your character participate in the Last War? If so, in what capacity? He was a soldier in the last war on behalf of Cyre, as a later constructed unit, he was assigned a position defending the interior of the kingdom and was only involved in direct combat briefly before the Mourning.
What effect did the Last War have on your character? The war was his purpose, until it was over, then he was left adrift.
What effect did The Mourning have on your character? While he feels the Mourning was a terrible tragedy, he is grateful for the opportunity it presented him to discover his true calling, a herald of the Becoming God
Backstory: Kwai has known nothing but the monastic life. After his parents died in the plague that nearly decimated his village, Kwai was sent to the nearby monastery by order of the village elders. His masters were strict but fair. His lessons challenging but rewarding. His life was simple but simultaneously filled with goodness. Kwai embraced the life of austere discipline. Likewise, he embraced the tenets of the Path of Light. Now that he has reached an appropriate age and mastered the mental and physical aspects of his training, Kwai has been sent from the mountains of Adar to Khorvaire, where he seeks to be a Lightspeaker in this post-Mourning age. To remain safely secluded in a monastery is, ultimately, to do nothing for those who suffer under cruelty and greed. Kwai isn't wholly certain of what the path ahead should look like, but he knows the time has come to take the first steps.
What nation does your character call home?Until a few weeks ago, Kwai resided within the mountain sanctuary of Adar on the continent of Sarlona. Now, he is navigating the challenges of being a stranger in a strange land. His new home--and it may be only temporary--is Regalport, the capital city of the Lhazaar Principalities, where he ekes out a simple living in the fishing industry.
Did your character participate in the Last War?Kwaiwas not involved in the Last War. During his years in the monastery, he would, however, periodically hear news of the war. He often wondered if the war would solve the troubles of the Five Nations or merely create new difficulties for them.
What effect did the Last War have on your character? Its effect was purely psychological. Although he was distant from the conflict, Kwai ached to take part in something so important, so historical. Not as a chance to earn glory, however. As a chance to defend what is good and right.
What effect did The Mourning have on your character?Initially, Kwai was overwhelmed by the horror and magnitude of it. Now, the Mourning is something that spurs him into action. A new era has begun in Eberron; he must do his part in ushering in the age of light.
Class: Paladin (into Divine Soul Sorcerer as the eventual side effects of his experimentation)
Background: Physician (More like a Combat Medic)
Backstory: I grew up on the coasts of Karrnath with my older brother Urmdir. I idolized him, he was strong, fast, wise. When he came of age to join into the ranks of the Karrnathian Legion I was left behind. I spent all my time thinking of ways to get in. Finally I figured out that they let medics on the skiffs, like my brother had been assigned, at almost any age. I faked may way in and was rejoined with Urmdir.
The Stormwraith was a striker vessel. Fast and vicious. My fake skills as a healer had to become very real all too soon. Those that couldn't be patched back together served from beyond the grave. The Blood-witch made sure no soldier failed to serve the banner. We did things I regret... but we were just following orders, right?
After a time I grew into my strength. I had a way of encouraging and bolstering my fellow soldiers that didn't go unnoticed. Our captain put in for me at Rekkenmark. I was set to go even though I'd leave Urmdir for a while. Before I was to ship out Magran handed me a transfer letter. The group of Seekers were already waiting for me when we docked. How could this have happened? I was set for Rekkenmark!
The trip to Atur went by in a daze as I lamented my chance at being an elite. Atur was, hazy. A lot of pain. A lot of assurances that I would find the divinity within. Screaming. When I was able to make sense of things again I was in a manure cart, my brother at the reins. "You look like sh---. Stay down!"
Since then we've been on the road. Avoiding Karrnath for the most part. Punishment for desertion is not as simple as death. If we were caught, we'd serve the banner eternally...
What nation does your character call home? Karrnath
Did your character participate in the Last War? If so, in what capacity? Siggur served as a medic and support fighter on a Karrnath striker skiff, the Stormwraith. He was often a source of hope and encouragement on the ship, even when the missions went south. His brother Urmdir shielded him from the worst of it. That may have been the only reason Siggur was able to keep spirits raised.
What effect did the Last War have on your character? Quite literally changed. The experiments that were conducted on him to make him a stronger soldier left him less human than he would like to believe. His brother saved him from a lot of the horrors from the times before the change but he still remembers the villages and faces of those they killed. Even more so the ones they raised to serve along side. He feels a sort of pity for Undead and won't usually hold back to put them down.
What effect did The Mourning have on your character? The Mourning happened while Siggur was still under some sort of half-state consciousness in Atur. All he knows is that ever since he's been on the road with Urmdir he is inexplicably drawn towards the Mournlands. It isn't a conscious thing that he knows. If his brother lets him lead for a while, if he picks a random direction to walk in, within a day or so he'll realize that he is heading directly for Cyre. Siggur secretly believes whatever was done to him is connected with The Mourning.
I was originally going to leave this thread open for several days, but after the flood of fantastic character applications I decided to commence the campaign earlier than I had initially intended.
First, a warm thank you to everyone who expressed interest. I regret that I cannot include all of these characters in my campaign.
Those who have been selected will receive a PM within the next hour.
Cheers!

Name: Gimble Garrick Doublelock
Race: Rock Gnome
Class: Rogue
Background: Criminal/Spy
Backstory: He was raised by a maternal aunt and uncle. His father abandoned him and his mother died. He grew up without a permanent home, moving a lot. He was always bored, so he turned to crime to pass the time and discovered he was quite good at it. He's a sucker for a shiny bauble or a sack of coins, as long as he can get his hands on it without risking life and limb. He found that he could get into and out of places without being noticed. So he became a spy for Trust, gathering intel and just awaiting orders.

Name: Gah
Race/Class: Changeling Bard

What effect did The Mourning have on your character?: Gah lost many of his friends who were in Cure at the time and barely escaped being caught in it by less then twenty four hours, making him much more cautious and wary of involving himself in affairs of politics. His twin brother San was in the country and was never found.

Kwai Koratana (Kalashtar monk)
Name: Siggur Volsung
Race: Human (Aasimar)
Cheers!
