After extensive research, I’ve decided to run a Princes of the Apocalypse campaign. I’ll keep the campaign entirely open-world, with a focus on wilderness exploration and dungeon crawls.
Point Buy or Standard Array, 3rd level, PHB, XGE, VGM, EEPC, and MTF content only, no homebrew, encumbrance on, and milestone level advancement.
Character Application:
Name
Race/Class
Background
Faction: I will be selecting one character from each of the five factions (Emerald Enclave, Order of the Gauntlet, Lord’s Alliance, Harpers, and Zhentarim.) In addition, I will choose one unaligned character who is familiar with the Sumber Hills (Perhaps an Uthgardt barbarian or an elf of the High Forest) as a guide. Please keep this is consideration when creating your character.
Race/Class: Drow Bard (crap I forget drow isn't available with basic Dndbeyond. Might have to switch races, but everything else still stands. Will go halfling instead if no extra options are unlocked)
Background: Acolyte (or Sailor if that option is available)
Faction: Harpers
Backstory: (I don't like to be anchored to an elaborate backstory, so here's the synopsis) , follower of Ogmha, one of the rising drow from Luskan, travels the sword coast as a shantyman trained in a college in Baldur's gate that doubles as a Harper stronghold.
Backstory: The people of Dessarin Valley sometimes whisper of the masked woman of the woods that lives deep within the KryptGarden forest. She moves within the shadows of the woods and many believe she is a witch, giving homage to dark powers. When pets from nearby villages go missing, or misfortune falls upon the caravans moving goods along the trade road people blame her, looking into the trees of the forests expecting to see her cracked wooden mask peering from the shadows, her dark eyes watching. The story is more complex. The lady of the woods is not one person. Tangle was an outcast, brought up in the allies of Waterdeep and abused and disadvantaged because of her Tiefling background and bat like wings. Eventually driven from the city she traveled north along the trade route, barely surviving, before finding herself adopted by an old, blind crone living in the woods of KryptGarden. The woman, a witch, taught Tangle the ways of dark worship and passed to Tangle much knowledge of the surrounding lands which they wandered. The old crone wore a mask, and she said people called her the masked woman of the woods. She then began Tangle's teachings explaining the balance of good and evil in the world, and the importance of it in the surrounding nature. Recently the crone foretold her own death and passed her ancient cracked mask to Tangle, telling her she must now become the masked woman of the woods. Upon her death, Tangle burned the crones body in worship. As the woman foretold, she emerged from the fire as small dragon (pseudodragon), bound to Tangle and formed of spirit and will. She said she could not die, and her connection to Tangle was unbreakable. Now winging in the shadows, she stays with Tangle, the new masked woman of the woods, keeping watch over the KryptGarden and sumber hills.
Experience with PotA: Played part of it, but huge chunks missed and it didn't complete.
Torvin has spent most of his young (for a Dwarf) life traveling in the outdoors learning the secrets of nature. For the past few years he has spent a lot of his time exploring the underdark. He has no idea why he has been drawn there. Was it his Dwarf heritage or something else? He has no idea but he is determined to find an answer to the question and to keep nature in balance.
Backstory: Tradition is and has always has been the lifeblood of the clan. Balmar was born in the northern mountains son to the clan elder and up to the tender age of ten learn the ways of his people through the elders and living off the lands that the clan called home. His life was turning to one of honor and peace until death came to their lands. The days events still lie in a blur to Balmar but the facts he was able to glimpse from his shattered memory still haunt him. Arriving at a dwarven stronghold on the edge of death from cold and starvation he knew only that his clan was gone and the name he repeated forever in his mind the one who would feel his vengeance first hand.
(Could also be unaligned, as he would have traveled to the area often with his clan doing work...)
Backstory: Meepo grew up on the streets of Waterdeep, his clan working on the sewers and helping with other tunneling work in and around the city. One day he found a dead body laying in an alley, and took a book from the corpse. He was always worried about lost thinigs, and did not wish the book to be lost. It ended up being a wizard's spell book, and Meepo began to study it.
(Here is a second option, though it is an illusionist, which some DMs tend to not like...)
Name: Sparks
Race: Kenku
Class: rogue 1 / wizard x
Background: Criminal
Faction: Zhentarim or Harper
Backstory:
Sparks works as part of the underground in Waterdeep. He is a thief and infiltration expert, getting into places many thieves cannot go.
Name: Damon Race: Tiefling Class: Warlock Background: Haunted One Faction: Zhentarim Backstory: Damon was once a student of an academy that trained wizards. When an unknown attacker and their dragon attacked the academy, the students and teachers all used their magic to defend, but after the battle was won Damon was expelled for using 'otherworldy' magic. Having the skills to practice magic but mainly directionless, he took to mercenary jobs. It was Halia Thornton who caught wind of his capabilities when he worked in a town called Phandalin, and she recruited him into the Zhentarim for various jobs to further their cause. She granted him the title of 'Fang' and told him she would inform him of any new jobs for the Zhentarim. (If you're familiar with the Lost Mines of Phandelver thats where the Zhentarim part comes from) Experience with Princes of the Apocalypse: Absolutely none
Backstory: Tranist is a survivalist. His Elven grandfather took him, against the families wishes, and taught him the ways of the forest, how to track, hunt, and live off the land. Determined to make his way in the world Tranist took his skills and joined the army. Tranist believes that his skills and abilities garnered the attention of the Emerald Enclave, unknown to him, Grandfather pulled some strings within the Enclave to watch over and protect his ward.
Race/Class: Mountain Dwarf Cleric (Twilight Domain if UA is allowed if not Life Domain)
Background: Soldier
Faction: Order of the Gauntlet
Backstory: Coldin grew up in a family of soldiers, the martial tradition stretching back generations in his family. He naturally followed the path, joining up with his father. Eventually a life of killing began to wear at him and he began searching for meaning in religion. After his father and six of his brothers to various conflicts he gave up and resigned his commission, becoming an acolyte at a dwarven monastery. His background and sense of justice led him to a strong worship of Tyr, and his insistence that people of the faith should be out in the world eventually grew to much for the leaders of the monastery. He was sent out on a mission to heal the sick and wounded of the world, but even he knows they simply wanted to be rid of him.
