The group hacks and slashes, and sends spells hurling, into the creature. It stands there immobile, but seeming to not be harmed by anything you throw at it.
After 4 rounds of this Whitegaze manages a powerful slice with his vorpal sword, and the thing's head rolls away. The body falls onto the stairs, and it is dead.
Hope this was ok with the group, as I did not see any reason to make the fight drag out on PBP here, and the end was enevitable. Good use of hold monster. You can all level up. (I forgot to roll each of those hits with advantage, so it would have probably been done in 2 rounds instead of 4.)
Kale finally stands up from behind his Goat Defense when the creature falls. "... does this mean we own the stairs now? Are we the Saviors of the Infinite Stairs?" Feeling inspired, he plays a short tune for the others:
"There's four adventurers who know That rainy streets are too cold, So they're clearing a stairway to heaven!
When we get here, we know If the doors are all closed, With a fight, we can get what we came for.
Ooh oooh, and we're clearing a stairway to heaven~
There's a map in a room, but we want to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes maps are misleading. In a well by the auction, there's a creature who lives, Granting all of our wishes with strings!
Ohh, and it makes me wonder. Oooh, it makes me wonder...
There's a feeling I get, when I look to the rest And my spirit is crying for leaving! In those streets I have seen rings of smoke hunting me, Silent voices from those who stand looking!
Ohh, it makes me wonder, Ohhh, it really makes me wonder...
And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune Then the prophecy will lead us us to reason And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the city will echo with laughter!
So if there's a buzzing in your headzone, don't be alarmed now, It's just the city reaching out to you... Yes, there are two paths we can go now, but in the long run They won't really change the road we're on.
And it makes me wonder, Ohhh, whoa~~
Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know-- The city's calling you to join it. Dear people can you hear the wind blow? And did you know, This stairway lies on that whispering wind!
And as we wind down on the road Our shadows taller than our soul There walks a hope that we don't know That shines white light and wants to show How everything might turn to gold And if you listen very hard, The tune will come to you at last! When all are one and one is all, To be a rock and not to roll!"
Whitegaze gives the decapitated creature a satisfied nod and cleans the sword before looking to the others, "So, what's the plan now? Continue to the dungeon?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Merric nods enthusiastically. "I be feelin'...weird, though." Turning, leads the way up the stairs, moving with all his customary stealth, despite the change of form.
You climb up to the floor where the map marks the entrance to the dungeon prison...
Opening the door you fine...
You are back outside, the rain pouring down all around.
An archway remains standing at the edge of the outer walls. A dark orange plaque near the keystone is inscribed with black runic script.
The plaque is made from amber, and is immune to magic that might alter what it says. In druidic, it reads “We follow the pact. We walk the path. may the gods have mercy on us all.”
Characters with a high passive Perception score will notice that on the northernmost door, shorthand glyphs are scratched into the wall in thieves’ Cant. They indicate someone has been here before, and left more notes inside.
Whitegaze puts away the sword and pulls his shield back on and readies his flail and javelins for use. Looking intently at the runes and glyphs, "I'm almost convinced these mean something, but no idea what. How about the rest of you?"
Merric looks at plaque. "Can anyone be readin' that?" he asks. He doesn't bother to indicate the Thieves' Cant glyphs to Kale, knowing his friend would have noticed them as easily as he. Instead, he says, "And I've a feelin' someone's been here a'fore us, a feeling other'n the plaque. Praps we'll be learnin' more side."
Kale immediately notices the glyphs on the archway (Passive Perception 25). He begins to read the notes in thieves' cant to the others, aloud.
When he's finished, he asks, "Can anyone possibly detect magic on this doorway? I would like to know what I'm walking through before I do so. Of course, our friend Billy here can be our test subject once again." He gives Brave Billy the Goat a pat on the rump. Then he activates his driftglobe and has it float behind him, shedding light for what may potentially be a dark dungeon.
"Reading does not seem to be the safest activity around here," noted Al-Ashari, "but if you have patience to wait for ten minutes, I can check magic auras, there was something in the book about it." Should others be content to wait, she will cast Detect Magic as ritual.
As you stand outside in the downpour, the constant thunder making it hard to even hear those standing next to you, the sounds of a thousand thousand bells toll across the city. As the bells toll darkness descends on the world...
The sun stops rising, plunging Elysium into endless night. Darkvision (magical or otherwise) cannot pierce this night, though light sources function as normal, including the light cantrip
Having gotten use to the constant changes of this place, Al-Ashari went on with her ritual, bringing up her ability to detect magic nearby. She only detects what magic the group holds though, the doorway does not appear to be magical.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Merric nods, then says, "I still be feelin'...weird me frens'...almost as though there be somethin' inside wantin' to get out. That writin' on the plaque, I'm feelin' I can almost be readin' it...I'm just needin' somethin'."
He looks around and, suddenly, his still nimble fingers snatch out at the torch coming back with a tiny bit of soot. His other hand pulls a bit of salt from his food packs and, hunching his body to protect this from the rain, he mashes them together and then his hands are moving and it seems he barely has control over them, and words you've never heard before from his spill out of his mouth as he casts Comprehend Languages.
"Well, I'm guessin' that wish o' mine changed a mite more'n me body." He looks at Al-Ashari and Kale. "Was that sorcery?"
He moves to the plaque and examines it, and everything around it to determine if it's safe. If so, he touches the plaque and reads the words upon it to his friends.

The group, finding nothing alarming, moves through the archway...
The Bull’s Escape...
The outer wall here has been smashed asunder as if by terrible, unthinkable force. Something crunches underfoot, as you see that this entire corner is covered in minute shards of glass. The shadow of something vast moves across the room, the echo of a vast beast filled with rage.
This area is covered in broken glass shards. Characters walking through the area should treat it as difficult terrain. All non magical items made of glass the characters are carrying break upon entering this room. This includes vials and bottles of all kinds.
Even if it was harmless, it was unpleasant. Unseen servant was sent to clean up the path (they had to keep that mop!) - a former "umbrella" was not an ideal tool but had to do.

"That was the idea, was not it?" Al-Ashari was fully herself now, "the sooner we get there, the sooner we know if it was worth the effort."

There seems to be a path that leads onward.
Whitegaze carefully moves forward into the room, trying his best to scrape a clear path with his metal shod boots.
(Would the broken glass apply to items in a bag of holding?)
Merric hears the tinkling of glass from his pack and curses. "Oy' me frens, that be a bad sound. Oh well...'tis always more where that be found."
ooc: Merric's vial of basic poison, the weak stuff, just broke.
