Alright, so i'm trying to lay this friendly debate i'm having to rest. A buddy of mine proposed the idea and I think it would be interesting to see what others have to say.
What class would this character discription best fit under?
A 7.5 ft tall combat veteran, Warforged knight that would go to any length to protect his allies. He wields two, unique shields that act as a wall when held together. His primary means of attack revolve around shield bashing, unarmed attacks, (if he really needs to) his Maul. Essentially just a massive tank that goes around screaming and charging around with his great-shields. He would run to heal allies and aid in defending/healing them.
Support character to say the least. Medic meets Tank. Would the Paladin class fit better than the Cleric class? One other guy and myself are leaning on the Paladin side for sure but a few others are saying the Cleric. Would any other class be a better fit??
A barbarian variant would seem like another great fit. I'll have to do some homework to find one that may fit better. As for home-brew variants, that'll be another thing I'll have to look up. I'm sure there's something out there for sure though. I just have yet to come across it yet lol
I think, though, if you are set on either paladin or cleric (as in, having a deity you want your character to be sworn to as a part of that character's story), then you might also consider playstyle. The advantage of a cleric is that they are pretty much infinitely mutable within the given structures of the game across several books: so, if trying to figure out how to realize a specific character concept, the adaptability of the cleric is a good bet. Within that, though, it seems like you definitely have more of a paladin playstyle going on with the up front tank, group hug kind of combat role. My suggestion in the barbarian variant is simply an extension of that more up front, combative style of play, at the cost of the adaptability and spellcasting of the cleric or paladin.

I almost wonder if there isn't a barbarian subclass or homebrew variant that might better fit that description.
