Lots of us on here have been playing one, two, or way more PbP games at a time, and having these games become an ancillary, pseudoancillary, or more focused part of our lives, and I was curious to hear others' experiences a bit more. The site went all hinky for a couple days, and while it messed up some people's in-person or remote sessions by blocking access to content, it also interrupted, to various degrees, access to PbP campaigns. It got me thinking that it'd be interesting to get some data and anecdotes back from some of the players here.
So without further ado, would love to get some responses!
1. How'd you hear about play-by-post? 2. What's the longest a game has been going for you? 3. How many games have you played at one time? 4. For games you've joined not knowing anyone in real life, how often, if ever, have you learned things about the other players? 5. Do you reveal anything about yourself to other players? 6. Pet peeves from other players and DMs? 7. Something that's happened in a game that's elicited real emotion? 8. Highest level a character's risen to in a PbP game? How long did that take? 9. Slowest leveling of a character, as measured by game thread page count? 10. Favorite Crowning Moments of Awesome from a PbP game? Perhaps something that could really only happen in a remote game instead of an in-person game?
Also feel free to ask your own questions, and I can either add them here or we could answer more organically...
I was introduced to DND by a friend and wanted to play more. I was looking through the forums for real-life games and stumbled across the DNDbeyond PBP forums.
2. What's the longest a game has been going for you?
Four months (and still going strong!)
3. How many games have you played at one time?
Currently DMing 3 games and a player in 5 more. PBP lets you do it and not fall behind in life. Which is amazing.
4. For games you've joined not knowing anyone in real life, how often, if ever, have you learned things about the other players?
Pretty often. OOC chats can often expand into honest conversations about life.
5. Do you reveal anything about yourself to other players?
Occasionally, but nothing super personal.
6. Pet peeves from other players and DMs?
Games that stop after I've become emotionally invested in them.
7. Something that's happened in a game that's elicited real emotion? Development of a character (my Aasimar light cleric, Kierro) during an altered game of Saltmarsh, which made him reflect on his past and his methods of fighting people.
8. Highest level a character's risen to in a PbP game? How long did that take?
As a player? Level 4 over half a year. As a DM? Up to level 20 in three months (granted, we were leveling up 3x at once each time because of plot reasons)
9. Slowest leveling of a character, as measured by game thread page count?
3 months, 1 level-up.
10. Favorite Crowning Moments of Awesome from a PbP game? Perhaps something that could really only happen in a remote game instead of an in-person game?
Either: destroying entire encounters at once with light cleric's channel divinity OR negating a lethal hit, reviving a party member, and killing something in the same post.
1. How'd you hear about play-by-post? Think it was in an article about the resurgence of D&D?
2. What's the longest a game has been going for you? In March, my first two games will be celebrating one year! Really lucked out in both.
3. How many games have you played at one time? I believe I had 7 going as a player at one time, but two fizzled out and now at 5.
4. For games you've joined not knowing anyone in real life, how often, if ever, have you learned things about the other players? Not much! Usually only as clues about reasons for absences from games, or time zones.
5. Do you reveal anything about yourself to other players? I haven't, really, mainly from reading the room? Not opposed to it in OOC chats, but it hasn't really come up.
6. Pet peeves from other players and DMs? People ghosting, or going monosyllabic. Insisting on a weird format, or verb tense/perspective in their narration. Vindictive misspelling. Seemingly ignoring one player's well-meaning posts.
7. Something that's happened in a game that's elicited real emotion? Had a nice moment of contemplation and reflection in a burned-out temple with its surviving priest. Protector/protectee relationship in another campaign with my goliath eldritch knight and a blessed/targeted aasimar child. Deeply love one adorable character in a new campaign of mine. Currently frustrated by a vampire in one of my games turning my friends into slaves!
8. Highest level a character's risen to in a PbP game? How long did that take? Ten months, level 8. Hoping for lots more!
9. Slowest leveling of a character, as measured by game thread page count? Ten months and hundreds of posts into one campaign and still second level, though the character would be amazing with a few more levels to play with!
10. Favorite Crowning Moments of Awesome from a PbP game? Perhaps something that could really only happen in a remote game instead of an in-person game? One time a druid party member turned into a big spider and wrapped another goblin party member in webbing as a sort of baby carrier to walk across a smooth pillar high over a rushing river. Escaping a haunted house's mirror dimension after nearly dying a lot. Escaping the hatchery camp in Hoard of the Dragon Queen, then beheading Cyanwrath.
