"The shipping lanes of Golarion's seas and oceans are filled with fat merchant vessels laden with trade goods both mundane and exotic, as well as the pirates and freebooters who prey on them. Under the banner of their Hurricane King, these buccaneers sally forth from that archipelago of lawless pirate ports and anchorages known as the Shackles, plundering the shipping of countless countries and trade consortiums, then vanishing back into the maze of islands and reefs they call home. The nations of the Inner Sea would like nothing more than to end the pirate menace once and for all, but the eternal hurricane known as the Eye of Abendego has thus far shielded the Free Captains of the Shackles from the threat of retaliation."
Skull & Shackles Player's Guide
Welcome to Golarion's Inner Sea! If you are interested in joining the crew of this adventure please submit a level 1 character that would have a reason to be in Port Peril, the capital of the Shackles. Imagine a sea version of the "Hive of Scum and Villany" that is Mos Eisley in Star Wars. You do not start associated with any ship perse, but if you want to build a character that has sailing experience or is interested in becoming a sailor, pirate, smuggler, or freebooter that would not be amiss. We will be looking for 6 adventurers on this voyage.
The Rules:
Ability Scores: We will be going with Standard Arrays or the Point Buy Equivalent (27 points total). As usual no stat can be above 20 after racial modifiers, so if you want to be amazing in one area at the cost of everything else that is possible.
Races: All PHB races are allowed as well as Genasi, Aasimar, Kobold, Lizardfolk, Triton, Feral Tiefling, Tortle, and Locathah. This is a really decent spread, but if there is something else you have your heart set on playing let me know and I will consider it.
Class: I am down for any Class and Subclass that has been published by WoTC, including artificer. If you have a subclass that is still in UA let me look at it for approval. If you would like me to consider a homebrew it must have a positive rating on the community of 25 or better for me to consider it. If it meets that benchmark then I will review it and provide an answer.
Previous Knowledge: There are a lot of plot twists and turns that come up in this adventure path. As such I think it is difficult to separate player and character knowledge on a second playthrough. I would prefer players that have not been through Skull & Shackles before. But, if you have that is okay, please just let me know so we can work together to keep you honest on the knowledge front.
Skills: S&S uses a lot of skill checks that do not exist in 5e. Most notably to my mind is Profession (Sailor). We will need to play these by ear as they come up. For example, if in the original you needed to do a profession sailor to steer the ship in combat This time it might be a Strength(Water Vehicles) check. So you would get your proficiency bonus if you had that tool proficiency. We will work it out as we go.
Backgrounds & Traits: You may select a background for yourself from 5e materials as normal or choose from these backgrounds that were adapted from the PF campaign traits by some plucky individual online named Kryx on the OOTS forums. These do not come with a feature the way most backgrounds do, but they are more specifically tailored to what you might be called on to do during the adventure, so in that I think they are balanced.
Alignment: Spoilers, you WILL be becoming pirates during the course of this adventurer. Choose an alignment that is able to make that life choice. Other than that I am open to just about everything so long as you can play with the rest of the party. If you are CE/Stupid and just want to watch the boat burn that will not work.
HP, XP, and Anything Else: HP will be max at first level, later levels we will roll for HP and reroll 1s should they come up. XP leveling up will be done by milestone so I don't have to keep track of the yucky XP math. For source books, I am freetoplay here on DnD Beyond, so I am looking for one person to sponsor this game by way of source material. That would mean that once I set up the campaign thread you share your books in it so everyone can build the character as they want it here. If you are willing to do this it definetly will give you a leg up in the selection process, so let me know.
If there are any other questions I will answer them down thread. Let the character creation begin.
Builder has worked in the ship yard all of his existance. He loves the work, shaping the wood, taking the raw material and making something wonderful out of it. He has sworn to one day build a ship that can sail through the Eye of Abendego unharmmed. Lately though he has found the ship yards growing unfair in their treatment of his kind. The non-construct workers get better pay, better accomadations, and better treatment by the overseers. While this did not bother him at first, it has grown to become an irritant he is getting tired of. His work is superior to anything the other shipwrights can do after all.
To make things worse, to Builder's mind anyway, he also has found himself wishing to sail one of the vessles he is building out onto the open seas. He knows he would not make a good captain, but there are more positions aboard a ship, and he believes himself to be the best Bosun possible. He has applied to several ships looking for a new Bosun, but has been overlooked in preference to less-skilled ship wrights.
Ventus is an Air Genasi who’s lived a life of rule breaking and mayhem, doing whatever he wants, praising Talos all the while. He figured he’d be able to get on a boat, but if something he thinks is interesting, he won’t say no, so long as he doesn’t get arrested or caught by one of the many groups chasing him.
Sounds fun! I wanted to see if you would allow a ship-building warforge artificer. It is the first thing that jumped to mine when I read the above, but I can do something else if it is out of bounds.
It gives a little bit away to say this, but the way integrated protection makes it to where armor can't be removed against your will breaks the early part of this game. I will allow warforged with the rewrite that a warforged's armor can be removed with 10 minutes of concerted effort if they have been incapacitated.
If you are cool with that change then warforged are good to go.

Sadly to share content you do have to have a high tier subscription to DnD Beyond. I am assuming based on your not paying a fee comment that you don't have a Master Tier subscription?

James Driftwood use to be a sailor, well more cabin boy really. Ruthless pirates attacked the ship he was serving on, killing his captain and crew mates in the process. James fought off the pirates the best he could, but a blow from behind knocked him out. Sometime later he woke up alive, sore, and adrift at sea with very little in supplies. He mourned the loss of his friends and crew, gathered up what little supplies remained and set out for land in one of the rowboats; but not before setting the ship ablaze to bury everyone at sea. Now James finds himself in Port Peril looking for work, possibly a new crew, and most importantly... revenge.

Be excellent to each other, and roll for initiative dudes!
Backstory: Reynard is the second son of Lord Caer Ferrand, Lord of Providentia, a small barony in an out of the way locale. You’ve probably never heard of it. Ever a disappointment to his father, Reynard grew up gambling and carousing in the many waterfront hostelries of his home town. He learnt to womanise and flirt, and how his money could win friends. Somewhere along the lines he actually developed some skills in this area and his natural confidence and the fact he was used to being obeyed as a baron’s son means he’s developed into quite the inspiring leader. However that was not enough for his father. He has finally given up on his errant son and formally disowned him. Reynard has left home and drifted, with fate causing him to wash up in Port Peril. Reynard has left with just the (expensive) clothes he stands up in. He guesses he needs to look to start a fresh life here...
Description: Reynard has a penchant for black. Black trousers, black shirt and a black waistcoat are offset by a pair of soft black leather boots. An ornate rapier - a family heirloom - is strapped to his side. Reynard’s quick and easy smile and good nature make him a likeable rogue, though his father despaired of him.
I have never played skull sand shackles, but I like Pathfinder and Golarion. Submitting a character.
Name: Seesu
Alignment: CE
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Wizard (Will see what specialty later)
Background: Sage
Backstory:
Books are expensive, academy fees even more so. Seesu hails from the Magaambya academy in the Mwangi expanse. She's working to repay a debt to those that funded her magical training. In seeking employment she found that sailing ships will pay well for a wizard that can cause gusts of wind on dead seas so she has been sailing ever since, constantly looking over her shoulder for debt collectors.
Class: Druid (The Golgari subclass from Guilds-masters Guide To Ravnica preferable)
Race: Variant Human
Alignment: Evil Neutral and Good Neutral
Backstory: Due to a hag witches curse, a semi intelligent swarm of insects has been soul bound to a unlucky young man. The insects can only feed off the magic the young man produces, but they are slowly killing the man from the inside out. They both know this arrangement cannot work for long, and are looking the high sea’s over for a cure to their curse.
Background: At and early age Cho, named by Captain Felix Everblade of the Sea Dragon, found work on the pirate ship as a cabin boy. Cho started life chained by the leg to the ship railing for the first 2 months. Afraid at first then bored Cho spent his time avoiding backhands from the pirates eating what he could. It was when he noticed to ship navigator. Cho took an interest in what the Navigator was doing and found himself trying to work out what the older man was doing and how the thing in his hand worked. Captain Everblade noticed the young captives interest and ordered the Navigator to teach the boy. That was 10 years ago. Now Cho, a competent Navigator and sailor, has parted ways with the Sea Dragon and seeks his fortune in the only life he has known, that of a pirate.
Wow, awesome amount of response for less than 12 hours. I am going to let this ride for a couple of days to get some other applications up on the board. But will probably close some time on Wednesday.
leapingmountain, don't forget to select your known spells.
Bacon Expert, excited to read the backstory
Moonknight, I think the subclass you are referring to is the Circle of Spores, yes? If so that is fine...but if my assumption is wrong then I think I need clarification.
Rylentlar, looks good...perfect motivation to join a pirate crew...no real feedback. If selected would be interested to get more detail from you on who she is indebted too, in case there is a chance to work in some minor tie ins.
Blakely, I have him pegged as a pirate version of Zorro, but maybe I am just reading to much into it? Anyways, no feedback, just will be interesting to see what future choices you make.
Sir_Karnic, to you I give the gift of a plot tie-in. If selected for this game then the pirate that looted and burned your boat and killed your crew is Captain Barnabus Harrigan of the Wormwood. Don't go reading up on him because that path leads to spoilers, but it will matter in the game...rather quickly.
Wh1tefuryGamer, I would be interested in seeing a draft of a character sheet for Ventus, even if it is a google sheet or on mythweavers or something. I don't always require it before initial selection, but since I have one for everyone else it will put you on even footing with the rest.
DragonDenn, Looks good, I want to give you a heads up since we have played together in other games and I know you are a Blind gamer...there will be battle maps in this game because tactical positioning is important for several of the encounters. If you are selected I will do my best to use a coordinate system like what ShadIn is doing in Monster Misfits, but if there is any other reasonable accommodations I can make to make the game more enjoyable for you please let me know.
Linton spent years learning the lore of the multiverse. He scoured manuscripts, studied scrolls, and listened to the greatest experts on the subjects that interest you. Your efforts have made you a master in your fields of study.
One day while reading over the arhives you discovered an ancient text that holds terrible secrets that must not fall into the wrong hands. So you set on off on a quest to unlock the ancient mystery, knowing it's worth the price of a civilization.
Linton uses polysyllabic words that convey the impression of great erudition, but is horribly, horribly awkward in social situations.
He is trying desperatley to buy passages via any ship to leave the lands behind
Self-Improvement. The goal of a life of study is the betterment of oneself is the only force that drives Linton.
Varus was born to be a leader of men. He grew up hearing stories of heroes and kings leading armies, and told those stories to anyone who would listen, only twice as good as how he heard it. He made men feel like the stories were coming to life, he captured their ears and hearts with his songs. Unfortunately for him, a corrupt local magistrate began to fear his growing influence. The magistrate sent his soldiers to kidnap Varus and give him a watery grave, but his friends and followers had heard of this plot.
They ran out to meet the soldiers, pleading with them to leave Varus alone. In the chaos, harsh words turned to violence, and all of those who came to help Varus ended up dead or a prisoner. They gave him time to escape, however, and he fled cursing his own cowardice. He ran, a fugitive, all the way to Port Peril, where he hoped that the magistrate would not dare to follow.
He still keeps his lyre, the instrument of his demise, in the hopes that one day he'll find the heart to use it again and return home to claim his vengeance. Until then, he merely works as a strongarm, taking on whatever jobs are available, no matter how gruesome, to keep himself alive.
