"Yes, well, the problem is about the ship. You see I-" Mr. Burke begins before the minister cuts him off! Now, Mr. Burke was not an intimidating man, but his aura of stress and annoyance was strong enough to deter anyone from going near him.
"Well if there are no more questions than I'll turn it over to Mr. Fourge here!" the minister interrupts as he gestures over to the man in the patchwork coat. Mouse had been watching the man sway back and forth with nervousness and, although it was freezing, wipe the sweat from his brow.
The man approached, cleared his throat, and said in a deep, but quiet, voice,
"Um... hello. I- er- I'm uh, Herman Fourge, the dock-master here... um... and uh, due to... um, due to unfair wages, overworking, unfair taxes, and a failure to pay our workers for two weeks, we at the dockworkers union are now on strike in till our demands are met! We have the support of the workers, managers, and even the sailors for this fight!" As he said this his voice grew louder and with more passion!
At the end of his announcement the crowd erupted in a mixed replies from cheers of approval to hate filled boos! Even some of the men of Team 6 roared with cries of victory!
Mr. Burke dusted snow and ash of his shoulder and muttered, "And THAT'S the problem..."
The minister hurriedly shooed Mr. Fourge the stage, a slight frown on his face, before smiling wide and shouting, "Well, that was unexpected, but the show must go on! I now declare that The Race for Frostbite Peak begins now!"
The teams stand waiting for the crowd to part, and as they are Mr. Burke turns to your party,
"Now listen! So, the boat I charted just told me today that he's taking part in the strike and said he won't leave port in till the strike is over! And all of the other boats I asked said the same thing! The money I gave you is for you to pay for someone to take you, but that won't be easy! Lastly, I have... some other things to attend to so, unfortunately, I can't assist you. Any questions?" he said all thins lightning fast as he rubbed his hands together and ground his teeth!

"..what did he say his name was Rat?" Mouse mumbled to himself after hearing from the men on stage and Burke. It seemed though the race had begun, no one would be getting started just yet. Luckily for his team though, Mouse was a thief. It didn't matter how big or small, every town had a connection to the criminal network. Port towns often had more than usual. Mouse's usual "guy," told him to seek out a sailor that kept a lizard for a pet, and had a hook where his right hand should be. He had strong ties to the network, and maybe, Mouse surmised, he could help give them a head start on the rest of the teams!
"Give me moment if you can stand it friends." He mumbled mostly to the backs of his teammates, as he shrugged off his pack and set off into the crowd. "Just give me 5 minutes!" He called over his shoulder and began trying to locate this possible connection.
"The boat was a small fishing one called the Romaxa. It was owned by some scruffy looking halfling with a glass eye. And as for a office they work out of a that loud tavern over there!" he points to the tavern only across the square. "Bunch of ungrateful ruffians!" I guess Mr. Burke isn't affected by the king's taxes as much as the others.
Mouse slinks through the crowd and makes it to a alley near the docks. A old man holds out a wooden bowl as you pass. A scantly (or at least how scantly someone can get in this weather) clad half-elf blows out a puff of smoke as she looks you up and down. At the dead end of the alley, sitting at a poorly made wooden table and chair, is a man with a shiny hook for his right hand. He seems to be playing a card game with a parrot and lizard duo. The lizard is holding the cards with it's mouth and the parrot hits cards with it's beak and squawks things like "Have a 3" and "Go fish". the man himself his in ratty black clothes and the bottom half of his face is covered with a bright pink, dirty, scarf. His name is Haggidferd H. Highlow, or at least thats what he told you two years back. You heard he moved up north but you didn't realize how far up north Coalburn was in till now. He looks up to see you and says through his muffled scarf,
"Go fish. Hello, my rodent loving acquaintance. Is there anything my friends and I can do for you?"
Mouse paused briefly to fetch a copper from his pockets and drop it in the old mans bowl, before covering his mouth and nose and pushing through the cloud of second hand smoke. "You'll catch a cold like that.." Mouse grumbled under his hand at the poorly dressed Half-elf. As he approached Haggidferd, Rat stirred around in his coat pocket before climbing up and poking his head out at the collar. The sound of the talking bird having sparked his curiosity.
Scratching the tiny rodents head, Mouse made sure the animals were the only other creatures around. "You'r pack has grown since we spoke last Highlow. It's good to find you well." Mouse stretches his left hand out to the table, and allows Rat to scurry down his arm to the other pets. "Rat and I are participating in the race. With the situation at the dock, we hoped maybe you could help us out. How do we get a pass off the docks old friend?"
The old man shivers but his smile is full of gratitude! The half-elf raises an eyebrow before shrugging and wandering off.
Highlow wraps another scarf around his neck as his muffled voice replies,
"Yes, Well. Thats one way to put it. It's horrible for both Lefty and Capt'n." he gestures to the lizard and than the parrot. "But it's better than running all the time. It's good to see you too."
Lefty puts a foot on top of Rat's head and gives him a head-pat! Capt'n starts to deal a game of solitaire for himself. When you finish explaining your issue, Highlow is quiet for a moment before snapping his fingers with a "Aha"!
"Your in the Race huh? Well go big or go home, I guess. As for the strike, you can still leave and enter the docks, as long as you have a boat and, in your case, someone to steer it. But I may have something for you. There is a rickety old thing at the very end of the docks. It's owned by a old gnome named Kain. He used to keep a lighthouse on Snowfall Island, but it collapsed after a snowstorm. Hes been trying to avoid taxes and save gold in an attempt to restore it. The point is, with some convincing, he'll give you a ride. The price will not be fair though. But it would be hard to find anyone else willing to outright defy the strikers."
He pauses a moment and then looks at you slyly. "Hey. You think you got a chance to win, my vermin adoring comrade? Because, if so... theirs the matter of payment for info..." ...you can tell he has a large, stupid grin under his scarfs!
Mouse pulled out the pouch he usually stuffed bread into to feed Rat when they were on the go, pinching off and setting a piece in front of each of the animals. "Tough little rascals." He laughed inside at the oddity of such tropical animals looking reasonably comfortable in such a cold setting.
Mouse nods slowly while he listens to the valuable info. Removing his spectacles, he used hi scarf to clean them needlessly. "I think we've got a better chance now." Mouse returns the grin he cant see but knows is under the dirty scarves. "I'm well aware of how it works. What did you have in mind?" He asked as he scooped Rat up from the table and deposited him back to the inside of his coat collar.
"Lets keep in mind the unfair price we'll have to pay Mr. Kain, yeah?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
While Mouse slinks into the crowd. Matilda will observe the other contestants. Do any of them look concerned and do any of them look thrilled of this twist? She wants to gauge if any of them will have an unfair advantage now that the ships are under strike.

"Alright then, my pest protecting pal, I got a suggestion... You get it free right now, and when you win the race, you give me enough to move someplace warm!"
With this proposition Lefty and Capt'n both make sounds of delight!
OOC: okay, i'm back! I try to post at least three times a week, to keep flow going, but I was very busy last weekend!
As the Swampling studies the contestants, their emotions become clear! I like to keep most checks at the very beginning easy!
The members of the King'smen (1) march forward stoically!... Except the old Archmage, Lanos. He has a sad frown on his wrinkled face and his eyes glance at the booing crowd members holding signs of protest against the king! You guess that they most likely have a ship, so you don't know what the mage is upset about...
The white haired halfelf from Team 2 has pulled out an abacus, sextant, binoculars, and another map and begins to stomp off to the docks with a calculating look on her face. Her redhead partner races after her, pushing aside anyone in her way! It seems they are already fixing this new problem!
Kurt (3) Simply straps his spear to his back and walks off to the docks, his stoic face splitting the crowd.
"The Blastzone" (4) face is beet red! He stomps his feet and cusses at the sky before pulling out a match and striking it against his boot. His breathing slows as he lets it burn. Once it burns itself out the homeless looking man drops it and begins to run off to the docks! He's still obviously raging!
It's impossible to get a read on Mr. Fourthfeild (5), but his choice of direction, away from the docks, is certainly odd...
Captain Jolli (6) raises a saber and lets out a triumph yell! Her crew answers back, pumping their fists in the air! They begin to chant "Captain! Captain! Captain!" as they follow the lithe woman to the docks! No pirate is without a ship!
Team 7 (The Bat-somethings) are now in full throttle! The monkey is shrieking at the top of his tiny lungs while the halfling is getting cussed out by the twin-tail sword girl. The wizard walks over and pours his bottle of whiskey out on her head! She lets out a guttural yell as she delivers a punch to the old man's gut! Meanwhile the half-orc seems to be doing what your doing and you make eye-contact! He and his lion both cock their heads in unison as they notice you!
The Dokktor's Guild (8) all cackle and begin to slink off into the crowd! They certainly seem happy!
When you look over to Team 9's spot, you find that they are gone! Looking around, you can't find a trace of them anywhere!
The tall redhead man from Team 10 raises his hand and shouts at the kids, with no effect. The group of teens have surrounded Headmaster Northstar as he counts out a measly pile of coins with a worried look on his face! The wizard looks up and around and says something, and the students start to fish around their pockets and hand him loose change.
Lastly Team 11, or Dr. Cashus J. Winkle's Traveling Troupe, seems to be hiding behind their stack of suitcases! The infrit with the top hat is raging as the tips of his horns and tail catch on fire! He screeches something about budget cuts and punches a suitcase! He then yowls in pain as he clutches his now injured hand!
"I'm positive we can make something happen on that front either way." Mouse smiles at Lefty and Capt'n before clasping Highlow on the shoulder. "You have my word. Thank you."
Mouse turns to scamper back into the crowded streets, but not before slapping a gold down on the small table. "Use it to get warmer until we return!" Yelling over his shoulder, he rushes out of the alley and back towards his teammates. He hoped they hadn't grown impatient, it felt as though he'd been longer than five minutes by the time he made it back to them.
"I've got a lead on a boat! It doesn't sound like much of one, but word is the Captain could be persuaded to defy the strike." Mouse proceeds to relay the details he'd obtained, including the warning of an unfair cost.
"We can discuss how to move forward if you like, but i think we should do it quickly. One thing i know about information, is that it doesn't sit in one place too long."
"Excellent work Mouse! Your swift thinking might have saved our trip. Let's move quickly friends!"
On the way to the docks Matilda will tell everything she observed about the other groups, who was worried and not worried, and that team 9 vanished without a trace. Some teams are flustered and not moving from their spot, and team 5 is moving away from the docks.
The GLRDHM Team heads off to the docks as the snow begins to pick up a bit.
As they walk down the icy deck, they notice some of the other teams.
The King'smen are boarding a magnificent ivory and gold boat, while Captain Jolli orders the anchor to be lifted up on her black sailed ship! Almost hiding between to large vessels, The Dokktor's guild file into a small black sphere, and shut the door. The propeller on the ship begins to turn as it begins to sink below the waves! A little farther on one may spot the halfelves from Team 2 talking to a large but very dumb looking sailor. Lastly, they spy Kurt doing some leg stretches before taking a sprinting start up the dock and swan diving into the aptly named Frigid Sea!
As the team nears the end of the dock, it does dawn on them that they are an odd bunch, but possibly the least odd of them all!
Sure enough, the last boat on the dock does have a gray haired gnome standing in front of it. The gnome was short, even for gnome standards and, unlike most other gnomes, he had no joy on his hardened face. He wore a thick coat of fur and blubber, and he was hard at work sharping a large metal blade attached to the front of the boat. The boat itself was slightly larger than you thought, but still small compared to the other boats ashore. It was white and light blue, or at least it was, but the paint had chipped and fell of long ago. It had one large sail, currently furled, and on the back was one of those new motor-things that you see so often in larger cities. Usually, those motor-things were quite expensive, but this one looked like it was on it's last legs. As mentioned, a large blade has been attached to the front, most likely to cut though the ice. On the edge of the boat sits the most sickly, most ugly, and most miserable gull you've ever had the displeasure to lay eyes on!
The gnome seems to see you coming out of the corner of his eye, because he puts down his sharping stone, turns, folds his arms, and gives you a glare as you approach.
Matilda looks to Mouse to speak to the gnome. Then she will examine the ship. Does it look sea worthy and how many can it hold?
OOC: Matilda is also looking to see how many people the ship can hold. Deep down, she feels awful for Team 10 as they are only children and doesn't think they will be able to get enough coin to define the strike. Maybe she mentions this on the walk down the dock? "Competition is brutal, but they are only children. If the ship is large enough, do we offer passage for them? This would mean they 'owe us one'. We can use that to our advantage later!" Would probably be what Matilda would play it as. Thoughts from others are welcome!
