Kendrick steps up next to Osso, saying to the boy, “I’m sure you and your friends hiding in the trees are capable warriors, but there are far better ways to make a living by strength of arms than banditry. Providing for you and your friends is a worthy goal, but down this road of theft lies only death. Tell me, is that what happened to your father?”
The mention of death, and his father are too much for the boy, and he breaks down crying. "I'm so sorry, Highway robbery is a family trade. These are my brothers, sisters and cousins. Not long ago, an elf woman as pale as the moon, as angry as the sun up close passed through, riding from the Bridged City. when my dad demanded the usual toll, she used powerful magics to murder them quickly, efficiently, and without a flicker of emotion. My mom escaped to tell the tale but later died of her injuries. Banditry is the only way we have of making money… and I've got younger siblings to feed."
”That sounds a lot like the elf woman who stole from our patron in Durgan’s Rest,” answers Kendrick, “How long ago was this and which direction was she headed?”

Bilick will listen sympathetically, the tale all to familiar to the dwarf. Remembering the stories he used to tell during his time on the streets of the Bridged City, though, he will peer keenly into the boy's eyes to see if he can discern how much of the story is true.
Other children, some as young as 9, reveal themselves from their hiding places behind trees and rocks. Their weapons are down. "It was several days ago that the mad elvish woman came through here." the boy assesses his situation. "What do we do. we need food, and some way to live, but all we know is thievery."
Kendrick smiles, a wide, honest smile, and says, "Well, now, that's entirely different. That's valuable information, that is." Pulling out 5 gold pieces, Kendrick hands it to the boy, saying, "If you can give me a precise description of the lady or her name, I can put another 5 gold in your hand along with that."
In a lower tone, he adds, "That elven murderer went to Durgan's Rest after leaving here and tried to kill our patron, a powerful wizard. If you are wanting to get out of town and find some honest work, I can arrange for passage for you and your kin to Durgan's Rest, and I'll write a letter of introduction to the wizard, saying you were made orphans by the same elven murderer who tried to kill him. I can't promise that helping him rebuild his tower or whatever else he needs will be easy, but It will be honest work. You may even be able to make a fresh start there and join the town militia for more coin...What do you say?"

"Strong work, make for strong man" he says while flexing his muscles in a comical fashion. Spotting some of the other children, Osso reaches for his rations. Handing out 3 days of rations between those kids brave enough to approach him. "Share food and stories over camp fire. Make for strong hearts. Parents gone, but family always here." He thumps his fist to his heart. "Never forget family" His emotions showing through his usually gruff exterior. A touching moment for those that know him.
Bilick's heart melts for the children. His blue eyes get watery and he chokes back a sob.The story is so familiar to him it could be his own. He claps Kendrick as high on the back of the sailor he can reach and he looks at the children sagely.
"I'd listen to him, if I were ye. I was standing in yer position decades ago, long before even yer parents were gleams in their parents eyes. And a woman, a good woman, an honest woman, took a chance on me. Taught me there are good people out there. There's more to life than scraping and survivin'. Changed me life, it did. Take this chance, kiddos. It leads to a far better path than ye are on right now."

"Thank you so much." The boy says. "I think the elvish woman was named Mariel or Magheil... Mer... I don't remember." A young girl approaches Osso, "Thank you for the food," she says. Her frail arms quiver as she holds the food. The cross bow at her side looks so out of place. She couldn't be more than 10 years old. "We will do as you suggest." Another young boy also comes and receives some food. "If we keep heading down this road" the boy points toward Durgan's Rest, "will we find the wizard that you speak of? We are all good builders. Everything we have was built by one of us."

”Eh, good enough,” says Kendrick at the partial name of the elven woman, handing the boy the other 5 gp and scrawling out a quick note to the wizard, handing that to the boy as well. “I’m taking a chance on you and your family,” finishes Kendrick, “Do right by me.”
He smiles and shakes the boy’s hand, sending him on his way with his brood.
”Right, shall we go into the city?” asks Kendrick of the others.

Bilick nods to Osso and Kendrick. "Thank ye, lads. It means a lot to me to see ye helping the bairns. Tsendur seemed a decent sort, right? He'd take them in, yeah?"
He looks up to Purbag in the cart. "Do ye have room in the cart for a few more big man? If Tsendur sent ye, then I'd be glad to hear yer story on the way."
As you approach the Bridged City you see there are several wagons and coach cabs parked off to the side. Merchants are carrying their wares up the stairs. There are also porters eager to exchange their strength and endurance for coin. As you look at the sea of humanoids ascending the stairs you see Tella about half way to the main gate. You see an orc push her off the stairs and she rolls down the mountain side. Luckily this part of the mountain is covered with grass, and Tella manages to miss the rock outcroppings. Tella is a little dizzy and disoriented, but otherwise fine. The orc continues down the stairs like nothing happened.
Seeing Tella fall from the stairs, Kendrick breaks into a sprint and calls, "Tella, are you okay?!" even though the distance is likely too great for her to hear him over the hubbub of the populace.
