Skulk eyes Captain Luc-Pierre closely, quickly trying to compare him with all the other captains he has served over the years. The Caliban mutters loud enough for Alex to hear, "Buying the crew a round of drinks...a simple way to garner loyalty. Simple. But effective."
I then step back a bit, turning to face the table of adventurers playing a game of card. "Nylia, see that table of goons? How much you want to bet that the goateed man is cheating, you know, the one that is dealing cards?"

Nylia flinches violently as Ox bends down to kiss her, her free hand going to the handle of her sword. She realizes what he's actually doing once he kisses her hand and relaxes. "Apologies, Mr. Ox. Force of habit." She takes a breath and looks toward the card players. "I don't gamble, nor am I familiar with that particular game, so I wouldn't know."

The pale elf stands and winds his way among the tables to where Captain Luc-Pierre is seated. Do they overhear anything the captain and his companion are discussing as they approach?

"Excuse me, Captain, my name is Savion Donnadel. I am not an experienced sailor, but if you allow, I promise you could have no better lookout for spotting breaching whales -- or anything else, for that matter -- than myself."
Skulk, Luc-Pierre appears to be a decent enough captain. He's certainly not the typical heavy-handed boat captain who tries to intimidate his crew into submission.
Savion, the captain and cloaked figure are discussing practical matters, such as the wind and tides. They break off their conversation as you approach, and you catch a glimpse of a white silk mask and a pair of bloodshot eyes beneath the hood of the second figure.
"An elf, eh?" Luc-Pierre muses. "I'll take it into consideration." He leans in conspiratorially. "Keep an eye on the other men, hm? They don't take much to outsiders, and things can get ugly out at sea."
"Thank you for the advise, Captain. We'll keep four eyes on them." Savion bows slightly, backs away from the captain's table, and returns to his own table.
Before he sits down, Savion says, "The other elf? What other elf, little one?" He turns and scans the room. He spots an elf in conversation with a woman and winds his way through the tables again.
When Savion reaches the pair, he says to the woman, "Pardon the interruption." Then, to the elf he says, "Would you happen to be joining the crew of The Candlelight?"
As his card game continues with Alex, Skulk notices the other elf as it exchanges a few words with the captain. The mugs of ale have begun to take their intended effect, and the Caliban speaks his mind a bit too freely and a bit too loudly.
"Damned elves. One thinks he can charm the ladies, and the other thinks he can charm the captain."He slugs down the rest of his ale and repeats, "Damned elves."

"Oh, sorry miss." I say apologetically, "Didn't mean to cause you to think I was kissin' you. I'm a pure gentleman, I tell ya. Just making small talk. Trust me, I know lyin' ruffians when I see them, and the dealer is at the very tip-top of those I've seen."

I reply to Savioin, "Hello, sir. You're a fine gent, aren't you. I was just going to approach the cap'n to ask if I could work, but that other elf just went up there, and I was waitin' for him to finish."
I gesture to Nylia, "This is Nylia!" (Putting my arm around her shoulder.) "We would both be pleased to join on this fair quest." I then mumble a bit into his ear, "And I do need myself some whale blood."

"He mentioned to me that his crew may not be friendly to other races. I came over to introduce myself and suggest -- if you are going to be on board, as well -- that we watch each other's backs." Then, Savion casts a sidelong glance in the direction of the Caliban and adds, "Apparently, humans do not have a problem with that type."
Standing next to each other, one can more easily recognize the differences between the two elves. Savion's paleness does not appear as "healthy", one might say, as some other elves.
"Oh, sorry," I say, "Must've thought that skinny one over there was you." I point off in the direction any shorter humanoid by the Captain.
"Thanks for the offer," I say, "But, I think I've got my back covered, and you get yours with someone else, possibly try kissin' up to one of the leitenants oveh there."

Ox, still with his arm around Nylia, starts walking towards Cap'n Luc'Pierre, and once I get within 5 feet, I say, "Hello, fine sir! I'm Oxford Wilrey! This is my wife, Nylia. I was wondering if we could join your peregrination on the morrow. Could a man like you use the expert eye of a man like me? Yuh'know, I myself as one of the fair-folk ne'er have to sleep, and can keep watch the whole time. I'd love to take on a higher role than just hunter, as I'm a master of cognizance, and my sweethart an' I are dyin' to learn to sail."
(Okay, OOC, I am sure that everyone who heard me knows that I was lying, but it's up to the DM to determine how much of everything they know was a lie. Here are the lists of things I lied about just to let those who heard know, and why I'm doing it. I certainly know that Nylia and the Captain know I am lying about something, so they might know these.):
Lies:
I do not think that Cap'n Luc'Pierre is a "fine sir". I assume the worst in people.
My name is not Oxford Wilrey. I just wanted to have a nickname among these ruffians, and Oxford is more distinguished and respectable than Oririeth or Ox. (I'm fine with being called Ox.)
Nylia is not my wife. I was saying this to protect her, actually, because ruffians such as these sailors are not always gentlemen around attractive women and might take advantage of her. I was looking for a way for us to stick together without others wondering, and I was also trying to benefit myself here, as you can tell.
I am not exactly an "expert eye". All Elves are proficient in Perception, I'm personally much better at Investigation, I just wanted to see if I could get the watchman's job, as the other Elf had something I didn't so I wanted it. He is slightly better at perception than me.
I was not lying about my ability to watch 24/7, as long as I have food and a bucket.
I don't care much about sailing, the honor of working with others like this is what attracted me more.
That should be all the lies.

Skulk watches his new acquaintance deal some cards. He suspects a bit of sleight of hand but says nothing. "Yes, six gold indeed," he replies.
Then, motioning with his head toward the blonde-headed elf, Skulk remarks dryly, "The charmer."

Nylia's eyes go wide at what she heard, and she promptly pulls himself out of his grasp, glaring at him then turning to Captain Luc-Pierre.
"Not being his wife - or related to him at all - aside, I'll be joining your expedition as well. See you in the morning, captain."
She orders an ale and dinner for herself, then heads back to her table.
