“It would seem Harlan’s death has made for some quick political currency. Is that what I should attribute the attendance of the Dawnmaster and the Loremaster to, then? Was that the reason they came to pay tribute to Harlan?”
Midian will attempt to make the following proposal as persuasive as possible.
“Seeker Venn, you’ve proposed I seek out a canal of Arionites, and in exchange I would gain the title and privilege of being a Seeker. You’ve asked me to report to you directly. I have my own ideals, and my upbringing in the church has likely shaped those. Do not take this request for audacity, but rather than of a man whose entire life has been spent within the church, first in the orphanage and later the training for the Seeker order.”
”If I succeed and gain the title of Seeker, I would like to continue to report to you, and only you. I would like authority to conduct my own investigations and declare my own targets anathema and fit for execution by the seeker order. I would like to be able to carry out such investigations without any restrictions from the other orders, carrying your full clout and authority to designate, shall we say, heretics.”
“This is contingent on my success in this investigation, of course. But that is the shape I would like to see for my future. That is the role I envision. There is corruption on the streets in these Arion cells. Corrupt spellcasters hide behind the walls of our brother orders of the faith. Others hide behind the shield of wealth and nobility.”
”I want to be a blade that can pierce all such shields. I want to be able to designate anyone a target and have the resources of our order to enforce such decisions. This would obviously make me feared, and held in contempt. But I do not wish to have my hands tied by hierarchy. I am in effect asking for a license to kill without impunity, knowing you trust that my judgment will lead me to pick the right targets.”
OOC: He is proposing a large degree of autonomy and insulation for his actions. I was thinking to roll Persuasion. Whether Advantage would apply, since clearly Venn’s request is above and beyond for someone of Midian’s station, or Disadvantage due to the nature of the favor he asks, or as a standard roll, let me know.
“For the others, Harlan’s death gives them political leverage to push for other faiths to become officially recognized as anathema. Actually finding his killers is of little importance to them, and such efforts could even damage their cause,” Midian adds. “Harlan was not well loved, we are both aware of this. You and I may be the only ones who care about seeing this matter brought to justice, truly. Harlan concerned himself with worldly matters, women and debauchery. The church has been my world, for my entire life. If I succeed in this dangerous mission, I am asking you to make me a blade who answers to know one and designates targets without question. I will have to prove my competence by succeeding, but if I do not have your trust to be the unquestioned blade of our order, now is the time to make that clear. You know now the shape of my ambitions, Seeker Venn. Let this child of the church become its most fearsome keeper.”
“It would seem Harlan’s death has made for some quick political currency. Is that what I should attribute the attendance of the Dawnmaster and the Loremaster to, then? Was that the reason they came to pay tribute to Harlan?”
At this, Venn shrugs and says, "It was also an honour due the passing of a Seeker. I would have expected no less and demanded a reason if they hadn't been here."

Venn is quiet for a moment in response to Midian's impassioned plea.
Then he says, "I hear the anger in you speaking, young apprentice. But I am afraid what you ask is something I cannot give for it is beyond both my ability and desire.
He then looks Midian squarely in the eyes and says, "We are Seekers. We find the wrong-doers and the heretics, but it is up to the priests to decide their guilt and the king to deal out their punishment."
He then turns away and looks out over the river again. "I will overlook this for now, but I do not want to hear this kind of talk from you again. There is enough trouble brewing for all of us among those in power without me having to worry about a young apprentice with vengeance on his mind."
Then he adds, "Do what I asked of you. Find out who really killed your master and bring me the evidence."
[OOC: Hee, hee. Very interested to see what you want to have Midian do now.]

Midian attempts to play off his earlier outlandish request as a social tactic.
“Then, you were being sincere in your offer. Find Harlan’s killer and I will be a full fledged Seeker. You’ll forgive my habits, Seeker Venn. While studying the workings of the mystical arts and the scriptures of our faith is important to me, I find the study of people a personal fascination. Had you been insincere in your offer, my asking for more than is reasonable wouldn’t have phased you. You could promise me anything, knowing you had no intention of providing anything. This tells me your offer was sincere, and one I can trust you to follow through on.”
Midian looks towards the cremation site, and speaks without looking to Venn for a moment.
“Harlan’s personal effects, his weapons and armor as well, and whatever he had on his person when he died, I assume they have been kept somewhere? I will need them. They could be useful and they might offer some additional clues. Surely we wouldn’t condemn valuable equipment and potential leads to the flames. Where are they?”
"See Jax," says Seeker Venn without turning around. "He will give you access to Harlan's things and tell you what we know about his death. And, I want you to report to me daily to give me a progress report."
[OOC: Brother Jax is the quartermaster of the Seekers.]
"As I am not a full Seeker as of yet, do you have some written letter granting me authority for this that I can show Jax or any others I might need to consult with?" Midian pockets the sacred flame he has inherited, and ruminates on Venn's proposal internally.
[OOC: While the flame itself is small, the candle holder is too large to 'pocket'. Midian remembers that Harlan kept it in his quarters.]
[OOC: Slight addendum. Jax is not only quartermaster, but is also Venn's chief assistant. Although not a Seeker himself, Jax is an important part of the organisation.]
Still without turning around, Venn says, "Ask Jax for the letter. He will put my seal on it. Use it wisely though, the reputation of the Seekers is a concern all of us must share."

"As you say, Seeker Venn," Midian says, and excuses himself from the conversation. He will go to his quarters and change into street clothes and don his leather armor, taking his rapier and shortbow with quiver as well. He will then pay a call on Jax.

[OOC: Midian would know that if he is not in his Temple's apprentice uniform, he would be stopped by the Town guard and questioned about his weapons. And, even in uniform, he would draw attention going through the streets carrying a weapon like a bow. When he previously went out with Harlan in the past, they were normally either in uniform on official business (and sometimes raids) for the Seekers and likely carrying weapons, or they would be in normal street clothes working undercover with their weapons and Temple connection kept hidden.
To this end, I have added the customised item 'Apprentice's uniform' to Midian's character sheet, if you want him to carry his major weapons and not draw unwanted attention.
Also, for future reference, take a look at the article for Donai on the world site. Midian's holy symbol would have a bronze backing (not the gold I originally put on the character sheet, which I have since changed); Venn's is of silver as all full Seeker's symbols are, while the Loremaster's symbol would be gold.]
Midian excuses himself from Seeker Venn's presence and leaves the temple of Mithra using the same public stairs he used to climb to the roof. He then makes his way across the main square of the Temple Ward towards the Donai Temple, which has been his home ever since he became a trainee Seeker.
The leader of the Temple guards at the entrance, Handleader Rawl, respectfully removes his helmet as Midian approaches.
"My condolences, Apprentice Voda," says Rawl. "And I'm sorry I could not make the ceremony for your master, but my duty prevented me."

OOC: If this is the protocol then he would likely leave the conspicuous bow behind and just don the armor and take the rapier and daggers.
[Official city policy: open carry of major weapons is frowned upon. Also, does he plan to wear his official Apprentice uniform over his armour? It would probably be a surcoat of some kind with the patch of the Donai Temple displayed prominently on it.]
"Thank you, Handleader," Midian says. "No apologies needed. The dead have done their duty, and the living have theirs."
Assuming he is not questioned further, he will proceed further in to where Jax resides.
Rawl motions for Midian to step aside away from the rest of the guard and then continues to speak in a lowered voice.
"I just wanted to let you know that me and some of the others don't like what those Arion scum did... If you ever find out who done it, let me know and I will make sure they get what's coming to them."

[OOC: When Rawl mentions guards above, he would be talking specifically about the Donai Temple guards. Each Temple has its own set of guards, whose task it is to protect their respective temples, and who also have their own distinctive uniform. Donai guards where black studded leather with blackened helmet and wear patches displaying the eclipse symbol of Donai. The Donai Temple guard is the second largest guard group in the Temple Ward (numbering about 25 men), with Aieda being the third largest (dark blue regalia and silver moon symbols) and Oannes (sea green armour, cloaks and symbols) being the smallest. The Mithran guard (tan-coloured armour with brass helmets and orange sunburst symbols) is the largest, being about half again as large as the Donai cadre. As well as providing protective services for the temple and priests, the guards also fulfil a ceremonial role on many occasions as well as providing crowd control at large gatherings. And for the record, the Constantine town guard is normally not allowed into the Temple Ward without permission from the Dawnmaster. And finally, the Temple Ward is not totally restricted to the Temple, there are also the head offices of some of the larger Sorendenese businesses in this area as well as the houses of important Sorendenese business men that have connections to the Temple. For example, the Constantine branch of the Bank of Sorenden can also be found on the main square of the Temple Ward directly opposite the Temple of Mithra. (There is a bank of Engle, but its main branch is in the Mercantile District.)]
