Walking passed the smith you continue onto the tavern passing a gnome, a tiefling, and an elderly human man gathered outside. You stop at the tavern/inn where you come across a boisterous gnome speaking to humans and half-elves in common about his travels. The atmosphere of the tavern is relaxed, people are jovially enjoying a midday meal as well as ale of various status in the village from commonly dressed folk to people who are wearing cleric vestments.

Although you are remaining unseen by those in the village you however are not gleaning anything particular useful from your spying.

Bael stops hammering and looks at you and then your symbol curiously before shaking his head. He then points to his throat and makes a gesture indicating he doesn't speak before turning from you to put the hand axe head he was hammering into a barrel of water to quench the red hot metal.

The woman is returning from the well and seems slightly annoyed you're still darken her door so to speak. Once she returns to the smithy she's addresses all of your group, "if you have work for us we will oblige you but if not please be on your way," she says her tone curt and her expression serious.
Shadow nods to Alandra then turns to address Hawthorne and Elly.
"I think I'll go into the general store to ask some questions. If you'd like to compare notes I'll be at the tavern later."
I enter the store and ask for Hobbs. Assuming he is available:
"Greetings, Alandra told me you're a good man to ask about local maps. Also I noticed a spire in the woods behind your shop, what do you know about it?"
Surprised, I've never seen drow around these parts, I try to avert my eyes and not give him a whole lot of attention. Trying to act natural I order a meal, just anything they're serving tonight along with some ale, how much does that all cost?

"The hero sought to save the world.
"If I keep trying, I'll be able to win," the hero thought.
But the harder the hero fought, the further the world seemed to tumble away.
Drowning in doubt, the hero could not even save themselves.
Hero, if you still believe in a brighter future, hold in your heart a thorn that can pierce all doubt."
"thanks for yer time then friend! May Melkor bless your smithy! May yer Forge always be hot, yer hammer steady, anvil hard, and yer steel strong!" I leave the smithy and make my way to the tavern asking random villagers if they've seen any other dwarfs recently
well i go to the tavern and order an ale then sitting in front of the drow to keep an eye on him, in Gauldring's experience drow tend to be trouble. If he causes, or is the victim of trouble I plan on being there to stop it.
I shake everyone's hand and smile. I call out to the lady and politely ask her if she knows the whereabouts of the Black Maze.
Elly & Professor
You are addressed by the tiefling who asks you to join him at the general goods store across the street.
Shadow
Once you've reached the store you find a half-elven man of middle age stacking crates of produce inside the store. He looks at you after you said his name but when you mention the spire he looks confused.
"Greetings," Hobb exclaims warmly standing up to face you. "Spire sir? I," he pauses curiously stroking his chin, "I can't say I know of a keep in the area," he adds next. "There is the gate house on the road towards the mountains but we are the only settlement for miles," he says next before gesturing at a table of maps. Some of the maps are spread out others are rolled up, "they're a little old but they'll do," Hobbs then adds before he returns to his work.
Kohl/Gauldring
Although tavern patrons are curious about the drow they are far too caught up in their own conversations to think of troubling a stranger. They're town is a waystation, they're use to all sorts of travelers here. Meals are reasonably priced at 2 silver pieces for hot meat stew or a porridge made of grain.
I go to the tavern and order an ale. I note where my companions are sitting and go sit by Dyson. I try to convince some patrons there to ride back with him while keeping an eye out for someone who looks shifty. Or at least shiftier than the drow.

Dyson thanks you and three humans agree to ride with him to the mountains. There are no 'shifty' people around other than your preconceptions that the drow is not trustworthy.

Hobbs gestures back at the maps, "take your pick," he says his face made a little harder, somber even by your question. "A plague took them and the old ones too," he says his tone sorrowful. "It was a short time ago but since the sickness has left leaving what remains of the town to mourn ," he added next.

After finishing my drink, I head out toward the general store, where the tiefling said he was going. I keep my eye out looking for something suspicious since nobody seems to know about this maze.

"Oh my!" Shadow offers condolences then starts looking through the maps. Specifically looking for any map which shows the location of that keep or the clearing. Either way I'll buy the most detailed map of the local area.
On your way back towards the general goods store from your vantage on the street you notice the spire again in the distance. I looks like a good hours walk from the village. Nearing the seemingly abandoned magic shop with the shabby Azuth you puase noticing a gap in the buldings which is basically an alley leading behind them to dense forest but the black spire still peeks over the crest of the tree canopy. Once you're reached the general goods store you join the tiefling just as he finishes his business with a half-elven man who looks visibly upset. The tiefling turns to you and is holding a map.
"Ah, hi Elly." I will discreetly share with her whatever information I have about the plague that took the young and old people in town. Then I'll look at the map I bought, is the keep or clearing indicated on the map? I'll also stop a passerby, point directly at the keep and ask "what place is that?"
The map is old, very old, and has no keep drawn on it. The village is however very well depicted with the forest surrounding it with the road to the north leading to the mountains where it stops and the south leading to the coast which has little discription. The area of the map around the village and forest however depict buildings that you see are still standing in the town have names of shops on the map but now look just as abandoned as the magic shop!
In asking a woman carrying what looks like laundry in the basket and you point to where you think the keep in the distance would be located near a river called Sruth however she looks at you then says "that'd be the forest sir nearest the river Sruth," she says looking at you know as if you're not very bright. She then adds firmly, almost like a warning, "I would not venture in the forest though," she then says looking at both you and Elly before walking a way to go about her business.
