This story begins with the party searching for work in Asarius, the City of Beasts. Whilst eating at a tavern, a courier suddenly approaches your table and delivers to you a sizeable parcel. He tells you all that he was traveling north from the southern moors when he found a desperate-looking goliath on the road. The goliath asked him to deliver it to your party, as she had heard you were famous mercenaries.
Opening it, you find it is filled with a small pouch of gold pieces and various sundry trinkets... and a desperate and vague letter for help. It guides you to the town of Galgarad, a town not listed on your map of the wastes. The letter directs you to a point at the southern point of the wastes, near a pair of hills just north of the Seepfeed River and the western edge of the Vermaloc Wildwood.
Hello! I’m looking to run the Wildemount: Dark Star one shot for five Level 7 characters. I'm really enjoying my time DMing my other game so I thought I'd try another one! No need to be a Critical Role fan but I would suggest you read up a bit of the lore regarding Xhorhas. Characters will begin in a party that have been adventuring together for quite some time.
Now then, to character creation! Please don't worry about your character sheet just yet. I wouldn't want to have someone spend a lot of time on it only to not be chosen.
Characters will begin at level 7. As this is a one shot, you will not be leveling up during this adventure.
Ability scores are either Point Buy or Rolled. If rolling, reroll all 1s. If the set is under the total of 70, you have the choice to reroll the whole set until it isn't.
All official classes and races are allowed, including UA. Homebrew is not allowed. Races and Subclasses from the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount are highly encouraged.
No evil alignments.
I have access to all character creation content and will be enabling it.
To apply for the adventure, please reply to the thread answering the following information. Please do not send PMs! Any sent through PMs will be ignored as it will show you did not read these instructions.
Name: Race: Class: Alignment: Backstory:
I'll be leaving the thread open for two days before spending one day to go through all applications and choosing the players.
Name: Wilm Silveriver Race: Variant Human Class: Fighter 5 (Echo Knight) Barbarian 2 Alignment: NG Backstory: (Soldier)
Wilm was working as a soldier when he was recruited by the party. He proved his value quickly, becoming one of the central warriors of the band. He is one of the famous Echo Knights, but has found some of the reckless rage of the barbarian warriors to aid him in this work.
Wilm is a straight-forward-is-best types. He is friendly and easy-going, but is reckless in his fighting, though that is offset by his ability to strike from a distance through his echos.
Name: Corrine "the Whistler" Arnice Race: Variant Human Class: Rogue 1/Fighter 6 (Battle Master) Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Background: Entertainer/Performer
Backstory: A former member of a traveling troupe of entertainers who used their performance as a cover for mercenary work, including assassinations. She became a skilled user of the Hand Crossbow to execute quick and silent kills. She was a somewhat notorious and enigmatic figure as an assassin, as well as a somewhat beloved regional "pop star" as an entertainer, and she maintained her double life for some time.
At this time she was Lawful Evil, her alias "The Whistler" always delivered on the job, minimal collateral damage. A reliable contract killer. Her day job as Corrine Arnice, a beautiful and alluring songstress, opened doors into keeps under siege and places of power, enabling The Whistler and her crew to accomplish their clandestine business.
Work went smoothly and given their lack of scruples, jobs were plentiful. Times were good for the bloody crew of musicians and killers, until a client betrayed Corrine and her group, and arranged for mercenary monsters to wipe them out. She encountered the PC party on this occasion, where they intervened to help what appeared to be a group of musicians beset by a monster attack. Her crew was wiped out in the attack, but the PC party saved her life. She joined the PC party at that point, and is extremely loyal to them. In the years since, while traveling with the PC party, she has conveyed the truth of her original identity and has had an alignment shift away from lawful evil to lawful neutral, but her old skills remain in practice for when the time is needed, and her crossbow remains as deadly as ever.
She grew a bit distressed when a new assassin began employing her signature weapon and tactics, and took on her former moniker of "the Whistler," but that life is behind her, so the new killer is welcome to the name. Now she is just Corrine Arnice, former traveling performer turned adventurer.
Rogue Expertise:Perception, Investigation (or Deception, Athletics, depending on the focus of the game)
Please advise if this character has been accepted and I can create a full sheet for her. Also, if so, let me know how you want us to handle equipment for these level 7 characters.
Name: Oloren Race: Firbolg Class: Druid, circle of spores Alignment: NG Backstory: A few rare firbolgs are entrusted by their clan with an important mission that takes them beyond their homes. These firbolgs feel like pilgrims in a strange land, and usually they wish only to complete their quests and return home as quickly as possible. My home in the forest is ordinarily such a peaceful place. The dusk circle druids keep careful watch over the plants and animals, and there has long been peaceful coexistence with the city-dwellers. Something changed in the last few months though. The animals seem restless. Strange dreams plague my people, including myself. We dream of fires consuming vast tracks of forest, sunlit groves chilled and frozen under sheets of ice, and great storms tearing rocky coastlines and mountains asunder. A meeting of the people was called, something not done lightly in firbolg society. My grandfather, the chieftain laid the evidence out before the people and stated plainly what he believed had to be done: "We must send one of our own to discover the threat to these lands." There was a long silence. Leaving home does not come easily to our people. Slowly I stood. "I will go, grandfather." With the prayers and trust of my people, I set out to discover what threat moves against my home and my family.
Will roll for stats on another post when I review the notation for dndbeyond commands in forums to make it do the rolls
Name: Dimiter Race:Bugbear Class:Rogue 1/Fighter 6 (Echo Knight) Alignment:Chaotic Neutral Ability scores:131414181011 (I did this with the dice roller as reroll ones always. If you want me to reroll with reroll ones once, let me know) Backstory: Dimiter grew up in the streets of Asarius, surviving on a combination of his wits, competitiveness, and his ability to fade into the shadows. It wasn't a great life, but he was getting by, unnoticed by anyone who might want to keep him from his freedom -- as a servant, a soldier, or something else. So he wasn't too happy when strangers from the capital started appearing around every corner, tracking him down, calling him by a name he'd never heard before but was somehow familiar. There's no way Dimiter's consecuted. He's no one special. And he doesn't want to become someone else. But he's taken to the Echo Knight training so easily. And some of the folks who've spoken to him from the capital (what Den is up to you, DM, I don't expect in a oneshot past identify & race will really come into it, but in case it would be useful as a plot hook somewhere, I'm flexible here) are really nice, and really familiar. He's conflicted. Work is a good way to ignore this, and he'll take just about any excuse he can to leave these problems behind.
PS - Since you said UA was OK, have you looked at the new Psi UA? Depending on where I put my scores, I might try to work in the Wild Talent feat.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ooh, Wildemount! Such a fascinating campaign setting!
Ability scores: 161310171414
Name: Felix Stormwind Race: Ravenite Dragonborn Class: Fighter (Echo Knight) Alignment: Lawful Good Backstory: Abandoned by his parents in hopes of a better life for him, Felix was adopted into the Stormwind family at a young age, but treated only as a servant due to his lack of tail. He watched his brothers grow into prestige and pleasure, longing to be a part of them. In his free time, Felix would delve into the possibility of alternate timelines, and he would relish living in those timelines, if only in imagination. In time, he enlisted into the Draconian army, and he helped attempt to fight against Vorugal, the Frigid Doom. During this battle, he had a near-death experience, in which several figures of himself from alternate timelines, including past and future selves, appeared and urged him to fight on. After Draconia was destroyed (assuming this takes place after the events in Critical Role), he spent the time wandering through the reaches of Xhorhas, trying to prove himself in a world that would not as easily reject him as the world he had formerly lived in.
(Wow! A lot of people going for the Echo Knight! But I don't blame them. I have to admit, the subclass looks amazing. Would love to try it out for size.)
Name: Caris Tragore Race: Teifling Class: Sorcerer 5/Ranger 2 Alignment: Chaotic Good Backstory: Until Caris was born, the Tragore family thought all of their draconic magic had faded, but it was clear that Caris had this gift running through her veins. She was put on a pedestal as a child, and a lot was expected of her. Caris was talented in magic but not good at helping people or behaving like a lady. As a young teen she was sent to the Soltryce Academy to try and hone her magic. They helped her there, but they still couldn't contain her wild spirit. She was severely punished for any misbehaving she did, eventually resorting to beating her into submission. Shortly before she reached adulthood, she ran away from the Academy, returning home to her parents and explaining what they did to her, and that she did not want to be a famous Sorcerer, she just wanted to be free, and have fun, and maybe protect people along the way. She thought her parents would be proud, but instead they were mad at her for "wasting her abilities", so she left. She has been on her own ever since.
Once Laris Mor finished his preliminary training he was sent out into the world to continue practicing his craft. Now a wandering Mendicant Cleric of Airmed, he seeks out those who do battle and deserve her assistance by their fortitude, courage and heroism in battle.

Name: Amandil Race: Human Class: Glamour Bard 6/ Twilight Cleric 2 Alignment: Neutral Good Backstory: Amandil's quest for a new, better way to perform led him to seek out half-elf bards, who eventually sent him into the elven forests. The elves, in turn, referred him to the fey and even facilitated his passage to the Feywild, to the court of Titania. There, he finally found the subtle but extraordinary magic of glamour he didn't even know he had been seeking. Eager to test his newfound skill, upon his return, Amandil formed a traveling troupe which charmed, and inspired, their way to fame. Unfortunately, as often happens, their success was their downfall and they broke apart due to "creative differences".

They did not have much growing up, but did not mind. As teens, they fell in with a group of entertainers, to earn some coin (some of which went home), and to see Xhorhas. Her brother would go on to work as a merchant and ticket seller for the group, while Meklit continued on with her position for another year. After thwarting an attempted robbery, the troupe decided to give Meklit her own performance: a fight against willing participants in the crowd. While a change in pace, Melkit did not enjoy the strongman lifestyle, even as she tried a different take on it. After years with the group, she decided to leave and find a different path. For once, she settled down as she was taken on as a wizard's apprentice. It was certainly different from what she was used to, and it took her some time to adjust to life as a student. Once she adjusted however, she started to rather well in her studies. Many years of studying and research went well, but the life of sitting at a desk slowly became boring. Eventually, she decided to set out as a wanderer again, to try and use the magic and knowledge in a more practical setting, while also maybe making some new discoveries along the way. In time, she found a new group to fall in with and go on adventures.
Name: Taldaer Kilath Race: Half-elf Class: Rogue 7 Alignment: CN Backstory: Born an only child to a Dark Elf and Minotaur pair, Taldaer grew up not having to compete for affection from his parents. As a mischievous child, he found he could sneak into and out of trouble more quickly than any of his friends. As a teen, he got into more trouble as his small heists began to grow in scope, though there were times he barely managed to talk himself out of more serious trouble. In his later teen years, while reading through one of his father's old books, he came across a treasure map hidden inside the pages. His curiosity piqued, nothing was going to stop him from going out in search of adventure. Now, as an adult, he puts his old skills to use aiding his companions in their adventures.
