On the floor of the cell sits a rather happy and clean looking half elf, for someone stuck in a cell. He extends his hand to Ophiwalyn, hoping for help up off the floor as well as any offer of a handshake. Smiling all the while the half elf replies "greetings friends, I'm Jahren." "If you're going to retrieve your personal effects from this 'Slough' might I tag along? I'm not much of a fighter, but will be no trouble. How are you feeling? When they put me in here a short while ago, you all appeared to be, shall we say, a bit worn out."
Halec shakes the half elf man's hand vigorously. "A pleasure, Jahren. How did you come to be captured by the same gang of thieves as we did? I must say, I'm shocked to be alive. Bloodthirsty brigands like these only typically take hostages who are nobles, other people of value that they can hope to ransom. My friends and I are adventurers, and have no such value. I didn't expect to awaken again after that fireball hit."
"As you may or may not know, a crystal called the Ruby Snowflake, a relic of importance, was recently destroyed by unknown means. We have been tasked with gathering the relic's shards and reassembling it. Failure to do so will result in this entire region collapsing into a ravine. Obviously this is an important task. The thief gang leader had a shard of the crystal, and we were attempting to recover it, but we found we were outmatched in the end," Halec says.
"Yes, our first order of business will need to be retrieving our gear, and our animal companions. I am a bit useless without my armor and weapons, I'm just a simple Fighting Man. They also have likely recaptured my mule, Helen, and Anthony's minature yeti, Abomination."
Jahren smiles at Halec and raises his eyebrows a few times as the fighter describes their mission, a miniature yeti and several other interesting topics. "I'm afraid I was not here for such a noble task as saving the entire region. It seems you are being modest about your importance, my friend. I myself had only recently heard of the Library and could not resist the allure of the knowledge I was told resides here. I heard what must have been your fight with this Slough, was it? I was captured upon attempting to see what was happening however, and thus here we find ourselves."
"You said a fireball? Oh dear. Are you all feeling well? What do you intend to do to ensure you are no longer outmatched in your quest?"

Investigation check: 19 Are there any makeshift weapons (chairs or other "clubs", or sharp pieces of matal to be used as knives?) and is there anything we could turn into armor.
Also are some of the robber's who i killed bodies laying around that we could loot?

Anthony only finds a single scimitar laying on the ground. He is not in the barrel room so he cannot tell if the bodies are still there or not.
Neil leads your five through the library, in a different route than Anthony was lead. You passed through a part of the library that Jahren may have passed through. Along that route, Neil accidentally knocked down a book. You run into a narrow passage with moss-covered wood walls until you reach a large wooden door with a dial lock on it. "Thieves tools cannot open this big guy, we may have to figure out the hard way. Unless someone has a Chime of Opening" Neil comments on the second sentence sarcastically.

"The lure of knowledge is understandable, Jahren, though you're fortunate to have survived, as are we," Halec says. "I am not feeling well at all, truthfully, nor I would imagine are any of us, though it's a bit of a shock to be feeling any earthly feelings at all, as I was certain this was the end for us. As for what we plan to do to ensure we are not outmatched in the future, I am a bit stumped. Tactically I suppose if we can manage to retrieve our gear and our beasts we might be best off falling back and resting, and coming back at this place fully refreshed and renewed. Unfortunately that means that Slough and his men will have had an opportunity to do the same, and possibly prepare even more vile defenses, but I don't see what other choice we have, I'm afraid."

"Even if I had my gear - likely beyond that vault door - it wouldn't contain such a magic item, doctor," Halec answers. "Perhaps we are at an impasse. Do we leave further from our goal than when we entered? Bereft of our gear and funds, we're no longer exactly adventurers out on an important quest, but inexplicable survivors of what likely should have been a fatal incident. Perhaps we had best return to Central City, notify them the mission has failed, and that they should begin to prepare for a regional evacuation, prior to the region's collapse into a sinkhole. They may need to leave behind the elderly and infirm, but I suppose some surviving to live on is better than none."
"It's cold comfort, and the knowledge that the failure is ours does not sit well with me, but perhaps that's what they get for sending away their military on a foreign camping, then reaching out at random to audience members for this important task, and beyond that, showing very little interest in adequately supplying us for such a critical mission. There was no offer of healing potions or mounts, it was pulling teeth to get armor from them, and even that they attempted to charge us for. It's like Central City and all of the surrounding inhabitants want to fall into a ravine, almost. That witch, Igna, would have died as surely as any other with the collapse of the region due to the Snowflake's destruction, and she wanted to barter favors over golden apples instead of providing guidance."
To Jahren, Halec adds, "It's been a strange journey, as you may have surmised. I happened to be a professional adventurer and artisan, but the mayor didn't approach me due to my skill set, just because I was there, along with these men, and a Tiefling woman and a Yuan Ti fellow who became lost somewhere along the way. We were assured the peril to the region is great, and real, yet no one seems to exhibit a modicum of reasonable self preservation in aiding the mission. Even these thieves, if they knew what they held, have insured their own doom, when the region collapses, although I hold much less sympathy for them."
I hand halec my scimitar, "i can fight without weapons, here, take this"
Halec takes the single scimitar, shrugs slightly, "Better than nothing, I suppose, though without my signature enchanted hand crossbow, I'm somewhat less than formidable in battle."
"If any of you have some magical means to do so, then by all means," Halec invites the others. "As for mundane means vis a vis application of physics and engineering, I have flint and tinder, and ample oil, which burns quite well, all of which combined could make short work of a wooden door. Among my gear, that is, which is beyond the door, or so I'm told. So it seems either one of you can magic this door open, or, we had best warn Central City and the surrounding boroughs to begin evacuation immediately."

"Don't be ridiculous Halec" i groan "we all know you're hurting, we are too, but if they started now, everybody could abandon this region."
I turn to the rest of the people "Humans, they are always so quick to give up. Who of you are with me, let us fight to the end and reclaim the shard. If we die, at least it will be a heroe's death!"
with that i begin a search for anything i can start a fire with Investigation: 11

"We already did that," Halec says sardonically. "We did fight, and we did die heroes deaths. And then bizarrely we woke up in a cell. Perhaps the gods spared us so we might at least save a few with a proper evacuation warning, rather than have everyone die, from erroneously putting their faith in us."

"Uh-oh, uh... quick, in here" he pulls out a hidden door in the wood and shoves everyone in. The room is crammed, dark, and everyone is squished together tightly. Through a hole in the wall, two thieves, much like the ones accompanying Slough, can be seen turning the combination (make a perception to see it) of the vault, once it opens, both thieves each throw a backpack into the vault before sealing the vault once again and leaving.
I offer my hand. " Nice to meet you, Slough! "
“Err, Anthony, I don’t think this man is Slough, Slough is the leader of the thieves, this half elf gentleman was also a prisoner of the thieves.”
Oh wait I got mixed up. In that case I ask " What is your name? "
Chazrael wakes up and brushes his clothes. "Well that was fun." He glances at the gentleman and adds," thank you sir."
