COACH ONE: The PCs COACH TWO:Maximilian, Helena, Helena's maid-of-honor Bibi, Maximilian's Chief of Security, Andre. Three sellswords: Juergen, Markus, and Udo.
GUIDE (Wren):Wait a minute, is this the right way? You misled the party, getting lost for a time until you had to double back along the same route. Quite embarrassing. The sell swords made a point to tease you a few times during the journey, much to your chagrin. Helena and Bibi were not very happy about the situation. SURVIVALIST (Asa): Your excellent survival skills not only served the party's needs, you also managed to find perfect points in the land to escape bad weather and poor terrain, availing everyone a few extra hours to recover from road weariness. Maximilian was deeply impressed with your skills. Anyone who suffered any Peril takes only half the amount they rolled. Account for this now. SCOUT (Wrinm):You were able to successfully, with Andre, make sure the road ahead was safe and secure - even when Wren led you all astray in his navigational mishap. Perceptive and attentive, it took everything you had just to make it through the day. At the end of the journey, the girls looked you over, and Bibi said, worried, "You don't look very good, aye, masta? Hoi, he's lookin' a bit pale, I reckon.."
You, perhaps, noticed a few things about the people you were travelling with along the journey. If you're interested, go ahead and make these rolls:
Something seemed vaguely amiss with their travelling companions (missed the challenging test by 1%!), but Pauladean couldn't quite put her finger on it.
Wren wasn't happy with himself for having gotten them lost, and it showed ever so clearly on his face. He just hoped maybe learning more about them would make up for the lost time...

(Challenging -10%) Scrutinize OR Rumor Test: Wren, you masterfully pick up that Helena is indeed putting up the bravest face on a situation she has no control over and Bibi is doing her best to be supportive. Helena is most concerned about the baby and hopes for a boy, since that's what Maximilian and her father want from her. You overhear from Bibi that Maximilian already has a son, one that's not willing to take over the Raffke business, to your surprise. (Standard -/+0%) Scrutinize Test: No one passed.
During the late afternoon, Andre saw something in the distance further up ahead the road. The coaches approach what looks like the terrible remnants of a battle of some sort. There are three wagons, their horses - all butchered - and corpses of about twelve people, all peppered with short black-fletched arrows.
At this point, everyone must make a (Routine +10%) Resolve Test. If you fail, you suffer from Stress. STRESS: Inflicts 1d10+1 Peril and 3 Corruption.
You are free to investigate the scene. Here are some rolls you can make:
(Challenging -10%) Scrutinize Test on the arrows: ????? (Challenging -10%) Folklore Test on the corpses: ????? (Standard +/-0%) Warfare Test on the overall battle: ????? (Routine +10%) Survival Test on the wilderness: ????? (Easy +20%) Handle Animal Test on the poor dead horses: ?????
Or, you can ask or examine anything else, specifically.
And while Weston is checking out the horse corpses, Pauladean will kneel down and inspect those tiny black arrows as well as the corpses themselves, seeing if she can riddle out the cause and order of battle-
(Challenging -10%) Scrutinize Test on the arrows: ????? (Challenging -10%) Folklore Test on the corpses: Most of the corpses are of lowborn social class. Not only that, you've heard of Mutant attacks around the area lately, but there's been nothing serious for a while. (Standard +/-0%) Warfare Test on the overall battle: ????? (Routine +10%) Survival Test on the wilderness: The attackers came through the woods roughly from the direction of Vorberg and returned the same way. (Easy +20%) Handle Animal Test on the poor dead horses: The horses were hobbled by gin traps, lain in the road below piles of leaves.
Here's some common information that doesn't require rolls, as it's super obvious:
This is indeed the convoy that was bringing the bride token, Andre can attest to this.
The arrows are crudely made with viciously-barbed iron heads. Most of the people have been shot to death. They have been only partly stripped of weapons and armor, while money and valuables have been largely left behind. There are no corpses other than those of the guards and the lowborn. Andre mentions that Heinrich Treumann, the bailiff, should of been here with the convoy as well, but his body is not here. The wagons are still laden with the bales of hemp, there was no attempt to steal the goods. The attack must of happened in broad daylight, given the time the caravan left Vorberg.
The arrows are definitely Mutant handicraft. This does not bode well. You've heard about Mutants before - foul creatures and humanoids twisted by Chaos or from the Winds of Magick. The thought fills you with a sense of dread. Perhaps they are not the subject of fables used to keep children from misbehaving, but actually real?
"How could this of happened?" cries Maximilian, who's face goes pale at the realization of Mutant activity against his caravan. "This is clearly my bride token caravan - but..there is no room nor the time to bring the hemp back to Swanzi. And, it appears Heinrich escaped during the attack. We must investigate this further. We proceed to Vorberg." he announces. "I cannot afford to lose face in front of Franz, nor can our coaches begin to even convey a portion of the hemp back to Vorberg - we're far too overloaded as it is. Not only that, Heinrich might have fled back to Vorberg, and i need an explanation. Come, we're only about an hour away from Vorberg. We must press on."
Note: Heinrich and Maximilian are good friends. Heinrich and his 10 year old son, Dieter were requested by Maximilian to coach the caravan to Swanzi to arrive on the day of the wedding.
“35 pennies a day will do nicely,” Wren answers with a nod. “We’ll take the job”
