Seeking one 1st level adventurer! Life on the Moonsea isn't easy. Bandits, pirates, and cruel lords dominate the land, threatening those who make an honest living there. Now, a new scourge is prowling the waters: A ghost ship has been striking small coastal villages, leaving its victims whispering about the "eye of the dracolich". Join the adventure and learn the truth behind this threat!
Read through the rest of this post thoroughly, and if you are interested, follow the instructions to apply.
About The Adventure:
- Setting: The Forgotten Realms (Faerûn)
- This adventure is equal parts roleplay, combat, exploration, and investigation.
- Shadows Over The Moonsea is designed to be completed in one or two real-life sessions. Games of this length typically take 2-4 months in a PbP format. Please do not apply if you believe there is a chance that you cannot commit to this length of time.
- This adventure is the third part of a long-running campaign. You do not have to commit to the entire length of the campaign. The party you will be joining has played through the first two adventures in this campaign, but this is, start to finish, a complete story arc.
About The DM & House Rules:
- I currently run five adventures/campaigns on this site, and have many years of experience DMing both in person and online. I have run PbP adventures that last a few months, and some that have been ongoing for years.
- My fantasy writing influences are R.A. Salvatore, George R.R. Martin, and Terry Goodkind.
- On most days I resolve actions and advance the adventure once each day at a minimum. When you apply, please send me a PM that includes the phrase “Ring of Evasion” to ensure the player I select is attentive to others' posts.
- I want PbP to be simple and flow easily. To accomplish this, I do not use grids, and I use grouped initiative to reduce the need to wait on players to post in a specific order.
- I do not use any averages. All health and damage is rolled, for both players and monsters. All my rolls are made in the game thread.
- Characters can die in my campaigns. Though it has not happened often, I do not fudge rolls. Reckless actions (i.e., charging headlong into an army) do have realistic consequences.
How To Apply:
- If you are at all uncertain that you can be committed to completing this adventure (a period of a few months), please do not apply. Don't be the person that ghosts an adventure and leaves their fellow players hanging.
- Rolling for stats is preferred, but Standard Array and Point Buy are also accepted for determining ability scores. See below about guidelines on rolling.
- If you are rolling for stats, those rolls must be made here or in a PM. Rerolls will only be allowed if there are no ability scores above 13. There are no other exceptions. If you are not comfortable with that risk, please use the Standard Array or Point Buy. To make those rolls, use [ roll ] 4d6dl1 [ /roll ] (without the spaces). No re-rolling of 1s. I don't know if people do this accidentally or if they do it to try and sneak it by me, but it happens a lot. I do examine all rolls.
- Reply to this thread or send me a PM with your application. Please include the 1) race/class you would like to play, 2) a short background summary, 3) the faction you are associated with and 4) your method of determining ability scores (include rolls if rolling). No Unearthed Arcana or homebrew characters will be accepted.
- Your character's backstory can be as light or heavy as you would like, but I will be working with you to tailor the backstory to the setting of this campaign, so be open to adjusting bits and pieces.
- This adventure begins in the town of Phlan. Your backstory should answer one question at a minimum: Why did you come to Phlan seeking work as an adventurer?
- I do not prioritize players with PbP experience, but I do try my best not to select players that have a history of leaving games unfinished or consistently making short/rushed posts.
I've been trying to play this character for a while, hopefully this will be the best campaing for them:
Name: V'rekh Race: Tortle Background: Outlander Class: Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery) Backstory: V'rekh used to live on his own near the water pond. He was most happy when the wind was blowing and the rain falling on his shell. Lately he has started feeling the magic rise inside him and the urge to see the world. One day when the storm was raging and the full moon was barely visible between the clouds he decided to gather his posessions and started walking looking for adventure. Rolling for stats here: Ability scores: 11115161013
Quick questions: should I also roll for starting hitpoints? are you looking for a first level character?
Very interested! Will add detail and send a PM soon!

I would like to play a variant human rogue or wizard but I am open to play whatever Class/race to fit into the storyline. If I’m a rogue I want to go with an ex-criminal who has decided to change his ways and help others and if I’m a wizard I’d like to have maybe learned what I know from a family member who was murdered for a secret he knew. Not sure what faction to choose and could use some help with that, but like I said, I want to fit smoothly into the game so let me know what works best. I rolled for my stats.
I also would like you to know I am very active on here (though I just started using dndbeyond for pbp) and will do multiple post in a day whenever appropriate.
Zarin is an Air Genasi Rogue who has traveled to Phlan during his infiltration of the Zhentarim. His father was a sailing merchant at odds with them and was captured or killed several years ago. In his search to discover what has happened to his father he has embedded himself within the network. During the course of his first year he met an undercover Harper agent who introduced him to the organization and recruited him. He eventually discovered that his father was killed by Zhent operatives and now spends his time helping the Harpers to take them down from the inside.
Air Genasi Rogue (planning on Swashbuckler subclass) with Spy background.

What's the party makeup so far? I have two characters who might work in this setting.
Ability scores: 16168161313
Name: Trisfiel
Race: Sea Elf
Class: Rogue
Faction: Lords' Alliance
Background: Inheritor
Backstory: Tris comes from a long line of storm sorcerers, but she can't so much as cast a cantrip. No rolling thunder shimmers from her blade, no smell of ozone permeating the air when she wrestles with a sibling -- or if there is, it's not from her. Her parents act like it's okay, they try and keep the sibling mockery to a minimum, and they've given up on having doctors come and look at her. But she still feels like a sore thumb -- arcane events she has no place at leave her time to gain expertise with a blade, and also to get up to a lot of trouble. It also means she's the only one at home when Sahuagin attack. She manages to activate the magical defenses of the family home and escape (possibly taking one or two items with her), the whole city going into siege lockdown behind her. She's traveled far enough on her own now (possibly aided by a teleportation circle in the home) that she's sure there's no way anyone knows who she is or where she came from. Which makes finding the help she's supposed to get a little more difficult than she thought. But Phlan seems a good place to start. Or at the very least, to get more gold, as she's down to her last few gp. (Elements of this story can easily be adjusted to suit the campaign -- how influential her family is, who she fled from, if she took anything, how far she traveled, why they were attacked -- and also probably some of that can be determined by you but kept from Tris. Other possibilities include reasons why she doesn't have any magic -- possibly her family is a family of Tritons, and she's only half Triton, possibly she's just an extremely late bloomer, possibly there's a curse.)
Please meet Kendrick , a sailor newly arrived in Phlan. Details of his application have been sent in a PM, but for those on the boards who are curious, he is a human barbarian sailor.
Thanks for your consideration, DM, and I hope to meet with your intrepid adventuring company either in this game or another.

Gerrard Feldren - Human Noble in Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Kerric Brightblade - Elven Warrior in "Apocalypse"
Name: Ironwood Race: Warforged Class: Paladin (Oath of Ancients) Backstory: Originally Caretaker XI, constructed to serve as the steward of some unremarkable noble house, Ironwood was no stranger to cruelty. His masters took him as nothing more than a tool, abusing him for their entertainment. It was not until Ironwood met Lady Greylock that he met any kindness.
An aging relative of his masters, Lady Greylock came to Ironwood's keep to live out her elder years in peace. She became so fascinated with Ironwood, metal made live, that she insisted on his company as she tended her gardens every afternoon. Years passed while they spent every afternoon together, Lady Greylock teaching Ironwood to tend the garden, sharing stories of her life.
When age finally took Lady Greylock, Ironwood made a choice. Affixing a giant oaken plank to the left part of his chest, he took an oath to protect and preserve that nature the Lady Greylock taught him to love. As his masters slept, Ironwood stole simple arms from the house armory and crept from his keep. He set out into the wilds, with no real plans save to care for these lands as Lady Greylock cared for him. Hoping to prove himself, he set out for the town of Phlan, having heard they might have a need for fresh adventurers.
I'll drop a character here in a bit. Definitely interested!
Name: Yhonwald
Race: Variant human (Sentinel)
Class: Fighter
Background: Faction Agent (Lords' Alliance)
Backstory: Yhonwald was a part of a group within the Lords' Alliance associated with tracking down and examining the occult and undead. After rumors of a ghost ship on the Moonsea reached the faction's headquarters, Yhonwald was sent off to Phlan to investigate.
PM sent full of questions. Party make up would be good to know so I don't step on too many toes in character creation. Also is this just level 1 or does it go higher? Don't wanna make a character who in my mind needs 5 levels to become who I want them to be if it won't get that far.
The table has been filled. Thank you so much to everyone who reached out with interest. I received almost fifty applications for this one spot and so many of them were great.
