(ooc: @DM, how big are the “holes”? There are five, and these correspond to the “bigger” tracks we’ve been following? Are there also lots of little slithers too? While pondering that, Grell will speak up: )
Grell stands from his inspection of where the tracks finally lead, turning to Zack and simply shrugging. He joins the others gathered around, noticing the marks on Kalgren.
”Grell only knows these things burrow into the ground here. But the bigger trails do make sense if these have carried the five members of the family to a lair” the Dragonborn says in a matter-of-fact way.
Continuing, he crosses his arms and has an expression akin to stoic thoughtfulness, “Grell thinks it foolish, but maybe clever, to mark oneself in such a manner, Kalgren. But Grell did not get a good look at any symbols on the houses to know much of this. What Grell knows of hunting things is we either try to locate where the creatures take their prey... or, if these creatures are attracted to the marks, we find their next target; a house with marks with a family.” Grell looks at each intently.
”If your mark does not work, there may be innocents at risk. If your theory of live victims taken to feed on later is true, then hunting the creatures to their lair saves those already there...”
The giant Golden Dragonborn thumps the head of his great maul into the dirt, resting his hands on the upward-pointing pommel. “We must choose a course of action now, before it is too late; lay in wait somewhere for the beasts, or find a way deep into the earth to find where they hide.”
Grell looks up at the others a final time, “... or a third option” he says with a fang-filled grin.
Vigil closes his eyes and ponders for a moment. After a few seconds, he opens them again. "It seems to me that the most effective solution would be to stand guard at one of the houses. After all, we’re not even sure if the kidnapped families are still alive. But that grin of yours tells me you’ve got an idea. What is it, big guy?"

Grell brings a massive hand to his chin and scratches while thinking for a moment.
”Grell does not think we have much time, before another attack, to search the whole town for a potential target, or to get to these creature’s hiding” the Dragonborn says with a hopeless sigh.
”We could split up to cover more ground, spread out throughout the town and lay in wait for the next attack. Anyone who sees anything gives some signal...” at this Grell looks around at the others, “... magically, perhaps? Tomorrow will then be spent fully searching and tracking to their place of hiding; they burrow, so we should look for ways underground, like caves or such...”
The big Dragonborn shrugs nonchalantly before picking up his maul and hefting it onto his back.
”But enough talk, we need action now... What do you all think?”
(ooc: basically he thinks we should try to find their next target or at least spread out throughout the most likely next targets and then converge if shit goes down. But he’s apprehensive of party splitting, so will happily stick together if we’re confident in either Kalgren’s flesh carving or somewhere that might be likely target)
Vigil nodded at the mention that the group needed to act soon. "If we’re to split, it should be in groups of two. We don’t know enough about that thing to go wondering around on our own." The tiefling considered the composition of the investigation team for a moment. "If Grell goes with Kalgren, I can cover some ground with Zack. That way, both group have a mage AND someone who can see in the dark naturally."
'Sounds like a plan.' Kalgren piped up, sounding a tad chipper now that they had a course of action. 'We'll set up a trap at one of the marked houses with me as bait while you see if you can find anything more.'
He nudged Grell with his elbow. 'Guess you're with me, Golden Boy.' He turned to the other duo. 'I trust you have enough magic or tools between the two of you to let us know if you find something or you need aid. Good luck, gentlemen.'
Kalgen walked off towards the house he indicated previously on the map. As he walked, he addressed Grell. 'You're obviously more experienced at this whole hunting and tracking business.' He said. 'So how should we go about this whole bait and trap situation? I just position myself near the mark on the house while you lay in ambush?'
(ooc: Nice! Is the house marked on the map something you did as a “we think this is a viable target”? On phone right now and feel like searching through thread would be pain 😅)
In step with Kalgren as they march off to the house in question, Grell turns to answer, “Grell has small experience hunting, but nothing like this. Ambush is also not a strong suit. Might be good to simply wait besides or inside the house and wait for them...?”
Vigil watched as Grell and Kalgren wandered off. It wasn’t until Zack asked for their course of action that he had a reaction. "The house that was hit first. Is it far? There could be new clues there if they haven’t gone cold. Or we could find a different marked house and set up our own ambush. Any preferences?"

OOC: Kalgren picked the house on the map based on: A. it is marked with the strange markings and hasn't been attacked yet and B. it is the closest house to the last known attack (aka the house we investigated)
'A fair question.' Kalgren replied. 'Though if it does come to a fight, I'd much prefer it in the open rather than a confined space. Could also give us a chance to test just how intelligent or tactical minded these things are.'
He gave a nod towards Grell's maul. 'Besides, can't imagine swinging that thing around inside a small space would be good for your form. Speaking of.'
Kalgren laid a hand on the maul's head and cast a Light spell on it, causing the head of the maul to illuminate the surrounding area. 'That should alleviate things a bit.'
At the house, Kalgren took a look around to familiarise himself with the surroundings. It's always best to know the lay of the land if you're expecting trouble. He mused to himself.

The occupants are home, happily eating dinner. As you clamber around the place for vantage points, you see the town slowly setting up lights in the major squares for those who wander at night... not that many have these past few weeks. It is still dark, so the Light on Grell's maul is useful. From the roofs, you can see the dark waters of the river cutting the village in half. It's fairly quiet, so even though you're about a half-mile away from the river you can still hear it moving along. You don't yet see anything too out of the ordinary, yet.

A dwarf opens the door and looks up at Kalgren. "Aye? Wot can I do fer yas?" It isn't a hostile greeting, more of a legitimate warm question. He's pretty burly, clearly easily able to handle himself, and probably protect his family. ...But then again, so would a carpenter. His auburn beard is braided quite intricately into three braids, and he's wearing a simple work outfit of brown trousers, and a white tunic.

At Zack’s question, he turned to respond. "There seems to be nothing in this house that we didn’t already know about. Sticking close to the river might be a good idea since all the attacks have occured in houses near it."

At the sound of the door opening, Kalgren quickly rolled down his sleeve to hide the mark for the time being. This was going to be a unpleasant conversation as it is so he definitely did not want to add more to it that necessary.
'Evening, sir.'Kalgren gave the dwarf a nod and put on his most polite smile. 'My apologies for the interruption but I wanted to speak with you. It is concerning the recent string of disappearances in Drefeld. Do you have a moment?'

(In front of the first house, what exactly do you all do? vigil keep watch while Zack reads?

(Sounds about right. Vigil would try to look for anything different from the house they already investigasted. Investigation: 11)
'Forewarned is forearmed, as they say.' Kalgren politely knocked on the door of the house. 'Lest they think we're the ones causing trouble.'
OOC: Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Saviour, the sun god Amaunathor: praise be onto him?

Zack will make a once around the crime scene, checking for any evidence that might add to that which they already have (Investigation: 15). Then he will turn to Vigil, "Shall we set up somewhere to watch? A vantage point to see up and down the street would be best, do you think? Or do you see some better watch post?"
As the slime around the crime scene had dried, it now becomes clear there was at least in fact, some blood in the area. But whatever had taken the family seemed to be at least cunning, if not very intelligent.Nothing new seems to have been missed, just the blood that was hidden by the slime now slowly crumbling away into dust.

Grell silently remains on the roof as the conversation begins below, his shining maul held at his side like a watchman's spear, his vision held fixed on the surrounding area.

Vigil feels a little disappointed that they didn’t found anything new at the first house. However, he had a feeling it would be the case.
'Evening, sir.' Kalgren gave the dwarf a nod and put on his most polite smile. 'My apologies for the interruption but I wanted to speak with you. It is concerning the recent string of disappearances in Drefeld. Do you have a moment?'
OOC: Kalgren will take great care to read the dwarf's body language/facial expressions throughout this conversation. Insight 21
