Underneath the orange glow of a dying candle lantern, strolled a tall man. He was old, but not frail. Though the fog was never-ending, and the cobblestones always cold, this man was quiet content. He walked confidently in affluent display, well dressed. He was an investor with more than a little bit of arrogance who has come to "finish this town." He tugged at his jacket, looked to the sky, and kept walking as the rain began to fall.
Miles away, the rain had already arrived hours earlier. A young man and woman argued in the upstairs of a two story house. Back and forth there shadows bounced across the window in the same orange candle light, the occasional object obstructing their forms. A thunder clap split the scene and a flash from the lightning paused the tirade. When it resumed it wasn't long before it escalated once again to violence, shortly before a scream of agony! A whisp of air blew out the candle, and the heavy pounding of panicked feet down wooded stairs was heard. In the darkness of the storm, hooves hit the unpaved muddy road, and the front door of the house slammed back and forth in the hurricane wind.
Inside the window of the tavern, a well kept dwarf looked on as he stirred a perfectly seasoned stew. Chunks of potatoes and carrots, were joined by chopped beef and celery; all of which was well complimented by the salt and heavy pepper. He thought to himself how terrible it would be to have to travel in this weather, and how he would gladly serve even the poorest guest this night.
No sooner had he thought so, than did walk into the tavern a soaking wet man, near out of breath from hurry. He begged the inn keep for a bowl of soup, and was obliged. He took a seat near the window, and stared longingly to the South. A few minutes later, another man approached. He too was soaking, but had a fierce anger in his eyes. He asked for a glass of powerful alcohol, downed it in a single gulp and repeated thrice. On the last, he asked for a blanket, and sat by the fire, staring into it.
In the morning, the smoldering ashes of the tavern were subject to investigation. The tavern keeper was interviewed, and the guard returned to town. The captain said it was more than that town could handle, and posters were distributed as far as the sea.

Some Spoiler-ish setting details that might help with backstory:
The cobblestone path is basically anywhere the settlement has been permanently established. The cleared roads that haven’t yet had rocks put down are more on the outskirts and some inter-forest paths. Finally, there’s dense trees, tons of bushes and just “deep forest” almost immediately off the cleared road.
As for weather, it's mostly cloudy and covered in fog. There’s a river not too far into the forest to the East of the settlement that provides a constant source of water for both the people and the clouds.
For an idea of how large the settlement is, The Tavern is in the far North of the town at that edge of the cobblestone path. There’s several shops, then the lantern post, several more shops, and then the southern edge of the cobblestone path. It would take about 15 minutes to walk from edge to edge. About 5 minutes passed the Southern edge of town to the right is the two story house.
The river is a solid four hour walk through dense Forest, but mostly because the terrain is just rough to cross. If it was clear, it would only be an hour, maybe two if you walked slowly in a straight line.
The nearest "town" is AT LEAST a days ride by canoe through the river if you were just burning every ounce of energy you had to get there. When you do manage to make it there, the river widens up and ships large enough to sail frequently dock to trade there. The elves that makeup the town's population, however, are distrusting of humans, and are the primary reason the human settlement is so far away. You are not allowed off the river platform except to trade in the immediate area or get on another docked ship.
From the dock, with a sailing ship, its another three days till you reach the next establishment, harbor of Lhargh Llur. There, far away Mountain Dwarves established a colony to receive their imports and purchase exports. The elves are mistrusting of them too, but the Dwarves came well armed, and are quiet pleasant unless threatened. This are where ships will be coming back and forth from, and they'll gladly let you tag along for a fee.
Lhargh Llur is where you'll find things like guilds, nobles, sailors, etc. Its large, bustling, and has a lot of money flowing through it.
The elf town is more Sylvan than most modern elves. There is no metal work, glowing things float freely about the town, and the druids find it quite comfortable.

Irenia was born in the city of Delnair, yet her parents moved to the city of Burnheart when she was an infant. She is the second child of the elven couple Alamaris and Nancilia, who both worked for the Burnheart Watch as combat instructors and officers. Alamaris was a supervising detective of the Burnheart Watch’s South Eastern quadrant and Nancilia became the Sheriff of Croplyn, the first woman to do so in hundreds of years. Irenia idolized her mother, so much so that she would sneak out of her room and follow her mother on patrol. One evening, the eight-year-old Irenia watched as assassins murdered her mother. She wanted to help, but Nancilia, knowing Ireniana snuck out of bed, told her daughter to stay back. Nancilia died that night, but she took two assassins with her. Irenia intended to become a warrior like her mother, but from that night forward, she vowed to make criminals pay and instill fear in them. Irenia had a lot of anger, which she channeled into boxing at the suggestion of her older sister Cole, who worked as an officer in Arcania and a former pugilist. She spent the next several years as a boxer, winning tournaments throughout the land. She turned professional at 106 years old and won two world championships but more importantly, she grew to appreciate all types of people - dwarves, elves, humans, orcs, goblins - all of whom had become fans of hers. With her career behind her, she set her eyes on a new path, becoming a private investigator. Some say her tactics art those of a bounty hunter or vigilante.
She arrived in Lhargh Llur for the first time in a few years, remembering her last bout against the local champion in a fight that took place outside of the city's walls.
