Today went by fairly quickly. Despite Salazar being perturbed by the tricky hobbitses halfling, Paulo and Callbrax seem to have hit it off fairly well. Both seem to share a similar outlook on life... much to the detriment of the rest of the crew. One would think that it would be difficult to find piranhas this far out, and yet, I still have the bite marks from the one they put in my bed... Meanwhile, Ord has been a most instrumental in my efforts to catalog the journey for further study. One can never know how the environment may be affected by such powerful necromantic magics. He’s quite insightful when it comes to the effects of the negative planes on the prime materium. I really should suggest a raise for the dwarf. In other news, I have been attempting to calm Salazar’s nerves, but it seems that not everyone reacts well to Elminster’s theory of planar reactivity. Who would have guessed! Put me right out when father used to tell it to me. Anyway, I will see what I can do for him, he seems like a capable man, perhaps some old fisticuffs may take the pressure off him. Hopefully we should have easy sailing for the rest of the journey. That does remind me, I should ask Callbrax about the specifications of his teleportation...
Good news, me! As you know, we’ve gotten Salazar to agree to have a tea break with us. I am greatly looking forward to it, he seems like a man who knows his tea! I invited Ord to come with us, but it seems he isn’t so much a “tea guy”...
...Alright so the tea break got a little bit heated. Evidently, Salazar and I have greatly differing opinions on why Greylush tea is unequivocally the best tea. He is wrong, but we have agreed to disagree. I will update you further on the matter at a later date. Regardless, tata for now.
Sincerely you, Lesley.

…the redness and itching are only now subsiding.
I am a day’s sail from dropping the High Harper’s agents at the tower.
I do not hold much hope for their success.
Paulo seems a grounded enough chap. Our talks long into the nights about legendary ruins demonstrate a keen mind and adventurous spirit. But I worry that that he underestimates the danger. He'd walk right into a sewer full of giant rats in search of a clue.
The overly hirsute wizard (some sort of overgrown dwarf?) is stuffy and boring. If I hear one more lecture on the physical contradictions inherent to the nature of realmspace, I'll keel haul the bastard. Just shorten the rigging, you silly sod! And he certainly cannot take a joke. You'd think he'd appreciate my lesson on the perils of drinking sea water.
The dwarven cleric means well but is hopeless. He's always ready with an inept hand. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first boat he's ever seen, never mind sailed. The damage to the sails will be expensive to fix. And the questions! No, I don't know how likely dragon attacks are in this area. If he's this nervous about a simple trip up the river, the trials ahead will likely kill him through fight alone.
Salazar’s a tender-hand, as plain as the wart on my toe. Were there more work to be done on this trip, I'm sure that I'd not have seen enough of him to recall more than his aversion to labour. As it is I've only that and his endless complaining. How can someone so big vanish so quickly when I observe that the deck needs scrubbing?
"Listen, Lesley, I know Sally can be a grumpy Gus, but he really does appreciate the honorable civility you bring to our days with tea. The lout is pathologically incapable of gratitude or humility, but I know he appreciates it. Besides, it's not like he can actually taste refinement anyway. One time, I got him to give me 2 platinum to go buy us some Calashim Brandy. I hit the pub, blew the whole sum gambling and begged a bottle of swill from the barman. Sally said it was as fine as he remembered. Anyways, I heard him carrying on about how fascinating he found your conjectures on the interpolation of planes in your theories. Be sure to tell him about it at great length. He'd be sorely disappointed if you don't. Anyway, can you do that trick where you clean the clothes? I confess, it's a marvel not to smell of salt or have it chafe my breeches. I might be tempted to learn the Art myself just for that."
***
"Look, Sal, like this. No, stop stop stop. Come on, Sally, it's not hard. Chase the tail of the rope like this, loop it around your fist, and pull the lead through your fingers. Proper hangman's knot. No, STOP! Did you break another rope? Pity that Cleric doesn't know Mending, useful bit of magic, that. At times, Salazar, I'm convinced your willful ineptitude is your most defining character trait. I know you're not afraid of work, the time and energy you've put into shirking clearly demonstrates a willingness to go to ANY length to avoid actually sailing this vessel! I've had enough of this, anyhow. What do you say to a game of Three Dragon Ante? What?! I would never cheat. Look, I'll play without sleeves this time, just to prove it."
***
"You see, Ord, it's a funny story. I picked up the chalice and tried to put the bag of sand there as a counterweight. Alas, I was too slow and the wall started to move! Closing in on each side, the hole so high above it resembled a setting sun, shrinking steadily. I'm a fair climber, but there was no way in the realm of hell I was getting out of there in time. But remember I mentioned the bas relief fresco of the young maiden and the dragon? Stop laughing, Ord, this is a true story! Anyway, with a little finagling, I contorted my body to fit along the carvings indentations of the dragons mighty wings. When the walls stopped, I was sorely pressed, if you'll forgive the pun! Anyway, it was about 5 hours before the rest of the crew managed to reset the damned thing and pull me free. That chalice covered half my tuition! The rest was scholarship."
It is in the evening on the third day of your boat ride that the winds seem to blow a little colder. The evergreen treetops of the Cloakwood rustle endlessly. Callbrax steers the boat alongside rocky shores. “See that?” he says to you, pointing to a monolithic black tower appearing just above the dark forest. “Zaldara,” the mage says ominously. “We’re close.” Minutes later, the wind howls a lonely note as Callbrax brings The Diviner as close as he can to the shore. A small cliff 10 feet high rises up from the rocks. Atop the cliff, you see dense trees and Zaldara’s lair poking above. The mage hops into the knee‐deep water, motioning for you to grab your equipment follow. The ocean is cold as death. Callbrax walks onto the shore and touches the cliff wall, muttering an arcane incantation. As he does, the wall parts just a bit, revealing a stone stair going upwards into darkness. Suddenly a bleat breaks the night that fills your heart with adrenaline and dread. “That’s Remallia’s horn. Good luck and be quick.”
“Ahem. Ah. Professor?”Salazar stammers apologetically. “T-totally fine with you going first. Very comfortable deferring to your sagacity in interposing yourself between us and, urhmmm, what ever may be ahead.” He seems to have grasped the handle to a flail unremarkable quality with his shield hand for a brief instant as he fishes for something from an inside pocket in his mustard yellow doublet.
“Just a half moment while Paulo or I can rig up a torch? Visibility on that stair is a bit... err impossible at the present.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lesley looks around, “What do you mean, Salazar? I can see perfectly find!” He pauses for a moment, ”Oh that’s right. Humans lack tapetum lucidum and cannot see in low light. My apologies. However, I believe that you’ll be impressed with not only my ‘sagacity,’ as you put it, but also...” Lesley steps back into the shadows (Stealth: 5), ”My nimble capabilities... Bugbears as a species are naturally elusive.” Lesley’s flashing eyes turn to Paulo,“Yes, let’s.”
”Yes, quite sure my dear assistant. Though, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to apply proper protection.“ Lesley will cast Mage Armor at level one on himself as a glossy sheen seems to cover the fur of the bugbear. Lesley is now AC 15.
Paulo shrugs, his natural stealthy qualities completely overridden by the glaring torch in his hands. "Perhaps Sally and I will hang back so as not to ruin your attempts at stealth? Or maybe we should go well ahead, so you can sneak up behind and surprise would be ambushers when they assume they have Sally and I sorted... how best to proceed, professor?"
“Perhaps it would be best for both Ord and I to lead the expedition inward, so as to keep the element of surprise. We are both quite well adapted to the dark. You two might follow closely behind if you like.”
