The wolves seem unmoved by Bernard's attempts to intimidate them. However, once the blood-red branches hit the ground near them, two of the wolves yawn and turn back, walking again into the mist, almost as though they grew bored of the cleric in the tree. Another two follow. The fifth remains for a moment longer. After a while, it lets out a howl, and goes to join the rest of its pack.
Bernard is, once again, alone in the woods.

Bernard finds a suitable camping spot just off of the road, sheltered by a cluster of trees.
He dreams of Prudence. A pleasant dream at first, of the two of them walking through the temple's gardens, impossibly beautiful in the old man's memory. They talk about a life together. They hold hands. They kiss, and embrace. Bernard can then feel her being ripped away from him, and he sees a pale figure manifest behind Prudence. Its features are difficult to make out in the dream, but Bernard's keen senses identify the form as an evil being. The figure wraps its arms around Prudence, and then...
Bernard wakes up. It is hard to tell how much time has passed, as the heavy mist in the air blocks much of the sunlight that would otherwise be piercing the treetops. He does, however, feel well-rested, at the very least.

Bernard wakes up, gasping for breath. He looks around at the heavy mist, at the dim light. He was still in this accursed place. Bernard groans as he drags himself out of bed, his body aching like never before.
As he packs up his camp, Bernard thinks of the dream. It was a tender moment spent with his true love, Prudence. He thought of that beautiful garden, of Prudence, who smiled as him as they basked in the comforting warmth of the Light. All of it was taken away from him. The temple, his love, all destroyed by demons. A single tear rolls down his aged skin, which he wipes away with his steel gauntlet. There is no reason to think of the past, he would tell himself. But the past was all he had.
The image of the pale figure remained in the back of his head as he moves back on the road. There was true malevolence in that being, but how could that be in a dream? Bernard ignored the obvious interpretation of the figure. It was all those poor, innocent souls that he had condemned to death in his thirst for vengeance. They would never leave his thoughts alone, never let him rest peacefully. They will never let him forget what he had done to them.
Bernard pays his respects at the smoldering funeral pyre before continuing down the road to nowhere.
After a short while, Bernard clears the woods, and he is greeted by a wide, empty clearing. Nowhere else to go but forward, he walks on.
It is a silent trek down the old road, which continues in a straight line for miles through the clearing. The dark sky grows darker as he walks, and just as he starts to think it would be a good idea to settle down for the night, he sees it: a village up ahead. Lights shining through windows, smoke rising from chimneys, the first signs of civilization in this bleak world.

Civilization! People live in this accursed place? Bernard had spent much time in villages like this- the favorite hiding spots of demonic beasts, seeking to slowly corrupt good-hearted people to the forces of evil. He knew that he must approach carefully.
Bernard backs off the trail and stealthily moves up to the village, wanting to observe for a while before making contact.
The village is a quiet place, showing no signs of life beyond the silhouettes in the windows created by the flickering candlelight inside. Bernard observes for a short while, and witnesses nothing untoward.

It was getting late, and Bernard had been on the road for a long while. In his experience, small villages like these are always welcome to traveling holy men, who would offer religious and clerical services in exchange for food and board. He wasn’t so sure about the type of people lived in this cursed place, though. If their nature reflected the environment they lived in, he best be careful. Bernard walks up to one of the homes and knocks on the door.

After a moment, the voices go quiet, and the candlelight is blown out. Peering through the window, Bernard sees the makings of a humble dwelling, four chairs situated around a table, with a more comfortable armchair and side table closer to the window, but he can't make much out in the darkness. Only the wisp of smoke that rises up from the recently blown-out candle.
Further into the village, Bernard can hear the distinct sound of two voices crying.

As the candlelight is blown out, Bernard realizes that he is once more in a dangerous situation. “The Light shall help me see,” he assures himself, as he mumbles a quick prayer.

Bernard snaps out of this line of thinking. He moves closer to the window and smiles, placing his weapons out of sight. He tried to speak loud enough so they can hear him, but soft enough as not to frighten them more.

“I apologize for disturbing your family. I’ve been walking down the road for a long time, and I’ve encountered danger on the way. This is the first village I’ve found during my time in Barovia. The woman's eyes widen as he displays his holy symbol. "A priest of the Morninglord?" she says. She closes her eyes and shakes her head, as if shaking off some unwanted thought. "I have no room for you here. I am most sorry. But the Blood on the Vine tavern is in the center of town; they should have room for you. Or the church, up on the hill, but I do not know if Father Donavich is in any position to house visitors, even fellow worshipers of the Morninglord."

Then, Bernard thought about his next words. Why are you so afraid of me? He wanted to say, but he didn’t want to upset her more. Bernard knew he could figure out this mystery later. “Thank you for all your help. I best be on my way, now.” He says, and he quickly walks away from the house.

Bernard does not sense any falsehood in the woman's voice or words. The only thing he can sense in her is fear.
"Thank you," she says to him as he takes his leave, and she returns to her children.
Bernard moves as quietly as he can between the buildings, following the sound of the cries. It doesn't take him long at all to follow the sound to its source: two young children, standing in the middle of the street. They stand outside a four-story house, holding each other, and crying. As he approaches the children, he scrutinizes the four-story house. A large building for a village, probably one of it’s kind. If it’s these children’s home, then Bernard will like to look closer and see if he spots anything out of the ordinary that could explain their distress.

Then he walks up to the children and gently kneels down to get on level.
“Children, why are you crying? Can you tell me your names? What is wrong, and can I do anything to help?“

One thing Bernard notices about the house is that it seems to be in much better condition than the houses surrounding it. It could almost be called pristine, if the light were allowed to shine on it. Not a single cracked window, no chips on the paint. It's definitely one of a kind in this village.
The girl looks up to Bernard, her eyes shimmering with tears. "I'm Rose, and this is my brother Thorn. We're scared of the monster in our house." She points to the house.

Bernard saw the pristine condition of their four-story house and noticed the rich fabric of their clothes. They must be from a wealthy family, perhaps even nobility. There must be more to this.
He smiles as he continues to kneel and talk to the Rose and Thorn.
“A Monster is in your house? Don’t worry, I’m a priest of the Light, and I’m very good at dealing with monsters. But first, tell me, where are your parents?”
Bernard didn’t really believe their story of “monsters,” but he decided to go along with it to comfort them.
