A slight splashing sound is the first thing that Bernard Lionsbane becomes aware of, the first sensory effect that can pull his mind out of the fog that’s been enveloping it. Slowly, his senses return to him. He can feel his legs and feet ache, as though he’s been walking for quite a while. He feels the weight of his gear hanging on his back. He sees the road ahead of him, or at least some of it, before it is lost to the mist. Tall trees on either side of the road pierce the thick ceiling of mist that hangs over them. He can see a large pool of murky water at his feet, the source of the splashing sound, as his boot rests in it. He can hear the distant howls of a pack of wolves. He can feel something in his right hand, clenched tightly. He feels an uneasy sense of dread and confusion. He tries to remember where he is, what he is doing, searching his mind for even a single clue, but nothing comes to him.
He feels, more than anything, alone.

The mist was suffocating, enveloping his surroundings. It was dark. He was alone. Bernard’s old bones ache as he struggles to dust the cobwebs from his mind. And yet one thing was clear, one thing he could feel in his heart. There was evil here.
“Where am I?”
Bernard looks down what he had clenched so tightly in his right hand, before surveying his surroundings. He did not belong here, he knew that. But then...how did he arrive in this strange place? Fear creeped up his spine as he listened to the howling wolves. This was a dangerous place. He must be careful.

Looking at the item in his right hand, he notices it is a letter. Once sealed with a wax "B", the letter opens and reads:
Hail thee of might and valor:
I, a lowly servant of Barovia, send honor to thee. We plead for thy so desperately needed assistance. The love of my life, Ireena Kolyana, has been afflicted by an evil so deadly that even the good people of our village cannot protect her. She languishes from her wound, and I would have her saved from this menace.

Bernard scratches his head at he reads the letter. This is why he had come to this dark place? To save a single woman named Ireena? Bernard also saw the enticement of wealth, but that only made him only more confused. The holy man had been trained to despise greed and gluttony from birth. Wealth could not tempt him to go to a foul place like this, but something else might. Did he know this Kolyan? And where even is Barovia?
After collecting his thoughts, Bernard looks at the road ahead of him, covered with mist. He takes out a beaded amulet from his pack, a brilliant citrine gem carved into the shape of the Sun. After strapping à shield on his left arm, he glances at the holy symbol and mutters a few words.
“Though darkness, deception, and mystery, the Light will show the way.” Though the words were hollow and mechanical, as if grudgingly quoting from some holy tome, the amulet began to glow with a bright light. With his surroundings illuminated, Bernard continues down the road, watching for any signs of danger.
Bernard continues to walk for quite a while. Hours go by with little change in the scenery, as he has to recast his light cantrip several times. Finally, after what seems like a lifetime of walking down the lonely road, shapes begin to emerge from the mists ahead of him. Ahead, jutting from the impenetrable woods on both sides of the road, are high stone buttresses looming gray in the mist. Huge iron gates hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the rusted bars. Two headless statues of armed guardians flank the gate, their heads now lying among the weeds at their feet. They greet Bernard only with silence.
As Bernard approaches, the gates begin to swing open...

Bernard cannot quite place the statues. Nothing he's studied before has looked quite like this.
The moment he passes through the open gate, it begins to close behind him. He continues on. Towering trees, whose tops are lost in heavy gray mist, block out all but a death-gray light. The tree trunks are unnaturally close to one another, and the woods have the silence of a forgotten grave, yet exude the feeling of an unvoiced scream.
