(OOC - if Kaltent was helping/Falavor was helping him, you could have probably just rolled your check at advantage @Vander)
(In this case, the helping was simply trying to cut another rope (helping get the prisoner free), not helping *you* cut a rope where it would make sense to use the advantage/help action)
Seeing Kaltent look at the knots, Falavor puts a hand on his shoulder, "Careful if you plan to untie it. If the rope burns the captive, it is likely to also burn you."
(DM Question - is there anything like tweezers or forceps on the table of equipment to use to help untie the rope?)
(OOC - even with the use of the tongs and not touching the rope directly?)
Falavor winces at the pain. "Well, that hurts more than it should. Perhaps we just focus on cutting the rope as I have nothing in my repertoire right now that might help. Well, not that I can think of. Do you have any thoughts Kaltent?"

(OOC - I'm a little confused. You say I take lightning damage when using the instrument to try to untie the rope, but when we try to cut it, with metal weapons, no damage? Even though they'd have handles, but there'd be no insulation to stop lightning damage like that. I'm just confused because it feels inconsistent.)

Physically manipulating the rope causes a trap to spring. Cutting it doesn’t physically manipulate the rope.
You try to cut it, but you can’t get through any of it
Falavor strength check: 8

You saw through about 1/8 of the rope
(In this case, the helping was simply trying to cut another rope (helping get the prisoner free), not helping *you* cut a rope where it would make sense to use the advantage/help action)
(Would it make it easier if I summoned my pact weapon as a great sword or great axe instead?)
(Ah true @Vander. My bad.)
No, it’s not the weapon that’s the problem, this is a special kind of rope
(How hard does it appear to be to simply untie it insteadof cutting it?)
Seems like a pretty simple knot

Sure, there are what look kinda like tongs, if tongs had sharp points.
Falavor grabs them, "Perhaps we should use these in case the rope damages as well as detains."
As you try to untie it, you take 8 lightning damage
(OOC - even with the use of the tongs and not touching the rope directly?)

Yes. The tongs are metal. Lightning is lightning
Kaltent shakes his head. "I don't really have any other ideas, no." He goes back to trying to cut the rope with his pact weapon.
Strength: 14
You make some Progress, there is still the majority left

(OOC - right. That makes more sense.)
