In a spire of a castle sequestered in a remote forest, imbued with the divine power of nature and magical energy, five adventurers stand in a circle around a small table, hands touched and eyes closed. A tiny, ancient-looking gnome, enveloped in deep purple-and-golden robes, can be seen stressedly muttering incantations and frantically gesturing with his tiny arms. Hastily reciting a set of spells and charms listed on a gigantic scroll of worn paper, he closes his eyes and mutters one final word. Suddenly, a small sized shard of a faintly glowing crystal lying on the table the five figures are surrounding begins to rise and shed a blinding blue light. Slowly beginning to rotate and gradually spinning faster and faster, the light soon becomes unbearable to see - the gnome recoils and falls backwards, his work done. The party that is surrounding the gemstone is enveloped in a swirling blue light that continues to increase in intensity. The lamps stationed on the walls of the room flicker and the countless books adorning the shelves of the nearby area fly off. A booming flash emanates from the center of the mass and echoes throughout the surrounding area. The gnome is thrown against a mantelpiece and falls unconscious.
Upon waking, he immediately notices the room in shambles. Slowly picking himself up, he views the center of the room. The table has disintegrated, and all that remains of the adventurers are their footprints in the ash.
Hello, folks! I’d like to try my hand at DMing something I’ve been thinking of for a while. A couple weeks ago I hosted a one-shot with a group of friends that involved sending the adventurers hurtling forward through time to a somewhat modern-day scenario here on Earth and seeing how the characters would interact with the world and piece together their lives & how they progress forward. I decided to whimsically dabble in the possibilities of a campaign focused on character interaction and storyline progression on a similar note, with the story focusing on how travelers and adventurers hailing from your average D&D background would fare in a scenario more similar to how most people live in our world. I believe I’ve found an appropriate venue to entwine the old fashioned D&D campaigns with the intention of this one.
About the DM: I’ve DM’ed various one-shots before & am concurrently DM’ing another campaign elsewhere. I consider myself decently well-versed in game rules and mechanics & am very interested in unveiling a story as the campaign progresses. This is my first time DM'ing on d&dbeyond, so don't hesitate to tell me if I do something wrong!
This campaign has a focus on story-driven interactions. Combat will happen, but the scale of it will be determined by your choices in-game. If you didn't get the general gist of the game, the setting will be nearly entirely reflective of the Human world of the 1980's. Don't be too disappointed, though; it has its own secrets!

What your characters do not currently know is that he has dabbled in spells that alter the very fabric of time and space. Hiring a group of adventurers who were willing to take the risk of perishing from this experimental spell, he cast his spell. However, something went wrong - the travellers were supposed to return a tenday ago, and all communication with them has gone silent.
Your mission is to be sent by the spell that Gardeldorf has constructed and find out what happened to the original group.
That, my friends, is where you come in - whether you are at the timely Hog’s Belly Brewery on a cold, damp, night in Waterdeep after seeing a pamphlet offering 5,000 GP for any brave soul risking death, or whether you are in the Brewery for another reason, is entirely up to you. Whatever the case may be, rest assured that the ventures forward are dangerous, and some of you may never come back.
You’ll be starting at level 2. The campaign seeks to take you up to somewhere around 6.

What brings you here to such a risky adventure? Heroic bravery, desperate folks looking for wealth, or anywhere in between? -Ability Scores (4d6 & dropping lowest. Always reroll 1’s. If you are unable to post for a certain duration of time, that’s fine - let me know.
I’ve always wondered this too! And you know, I thought it might be hilarious if I played a character that was already a little ahead of its time...an artificer!
Name: Gamop Warkas
Race/Class: Gnome Artificer(Alchemist)
Backstory: Gamop Warkas wasn’t really the adventuring sort. But he was a gnome, and by golly he was he a fan of Gardeldolf Morphin, one of the most powerful gnome wizards in the world. Gamop had spent his life adoring his works, inspired to make his own forays into magic by Gardeldrof. He was a decent artificer, but he knew that he was nothing compared to the famous celebrity. When he heard of the disastrous effects of the spell, he couldn’t believe that his idol could do such a thing. He wanted to find the truth behind the whole business, so he packed his bags and went to Hog’s Belly Brewery to get a closer look. Death? Not an issue, that would never happen to him, would it? And he might even have a chance to see the famed Gardeldorf Morphin...

This could be interesting! I like that it's set somewhere in the 80's rather than modern day, I personally prefer to RP without having to think about the ramifications of having the internet and social media.
Name: Baragon Starfeller
Race: Leonin
Class: Paladin (Most likely going into the new Oath of Glory but might change depending on circumstances)
Backstory: When he was just a cub, he was afflicted by a rare disease unique to the Leonin. His pride-mates tried everything, sought cures from the other prides and even outsiders. Nothing worked. It appeared that young Baragon was going to die at this rate. However, it was a traveling Gnome who devised the cure, more on a whim than compassion. His name was Gardeldorf Morphin. Regardless of his motivations, from that day on young Baragon considered himself owing this man a great debt and his father made him swear that one day he would find a way to repay that debt.
Years passed and the once sick cub had grown into a full fledged Leonin, a towering mass of muscle and fur brimming with vitality. Throughout his youth he trained away from his home plains, with his mentor Volien Longstride, an accomplished Centaur runner and discus thrower. The two became steadfast friends as he learned equal parts combat and sportsmanship. Despite traditions, he found the ways of Iroas the god of victory spoke to him and so he began carrying his name in each competition. Sure enough, glory and applause soon followed him like the rolling thunder that inevitably follows a brilliant flash of lightning. He soon gained regional fame as a promising champion to the god of victory.
His training was cut short when rumors of Gardeldorf's 'incident' and his death drifted to his homeland. He knew that he had to do something. Search for the man, if he was alive he would find him and if he was dead than he would find his legacy. When news of Gardeldorf's offer came again, he made haste towards Waterdeep. It may have been his only chance to repay his life debt and perhaps even meet his destiny... which is how he arrived at the Hog's Belly Brewery that dreary night.
Let me see what scores I get to work with and then I will come back and edit in a character.

-Name: Doe'Tana -Race: Kalashtar -Class: Circle of the Moon Druid (This is player knowledge, but will not be immediately revealed to the characters...I'm going undercover. Shhhh.) -Backstory - Doe'Tana is the youngest of his circle, having only just recently been awakened to the presence of his Quori and the critical mission the circle provides in keeping balance in the world. It was over two weeks ago during sleep that his mind was pulled from the memories of Tana and into a more present vision. A vision of a great explosion of arcane power ripping a hole through the web of the natural world, thrusting creatures through that hole into some other place. Since the night of that vision Doe'Tana's dreams have been anxiety ridden and blotted with terror. The balance is wrong, the web now injured is in danger of unraveling. The dreams and visions that Tana sends him give him no respite in sleep.
Consulting the high sage with his visions, Doe'Tana was selected by the Circle to seek out the source of the arcane explosion and do what is necessary to restore the Web to its natural state, to restore the balance.
Upon seeing the pamphlet offering money in exchange for uncertain adventures and possible death, the memory of a wizzened old gnome with an arcane book floated through Doe'Tana's mind. This is the first step on his journey to fulfill the visions and restore the web of the natural world to its proper order. Under the guise of a outlands traveler and magician he decides to seek out this reward as a way to investigate the gnome.
Brilros has worked in a lab and forge, building the golems and weapons that will be the cutting edge of defensive tech for his kingdom. He could not be more proud to serve. Only one thing could pull him away from it, in fact: the disappearance of his brother. Gardeldorf - that blasted wizard!- took his brother and sent him gods-know-where! So Brilros has gathered himself, and girded his loins to go on the search.

Name: Elaven Quickpaw -Race: Swiftstride Shifter -Class: Rogue, going for swashbuckler at level 3 but not an over the top pirate, more one-on-one duelist. Possible dip into rogue or fighter -Backstory: Elaven grew up among others of her tribe. Running, hunting and training with the sword. Upon the age of 16 she set out of the forests for the wider world and joined up with a small band of mercenaries. There she got some real world training with the blade. At least until she was laid open by an explosion from a particularly crafty hobgoblin. After a month of recovery and a ton of medical bills, she was ready to get back into action but her former crew had moved on without here. The prospect of easy was too enticing and she moved to join up.
Hello, I am up for a daily game. If you will have me, of course.

-Tidonk (Formerly of Tribe -Race Bugbear -Class Fighter -Backstory - Son of the former chief who has been over thrown and eaten. Tidonk is the lone survivor of his family (so he believes) and dreams of returning to avenge his fathers death and potentially lead the tribe. He seeks great feats and renown to help him return and triumph over his enemies. Hog's Brewery is his first stop since fleeing his tribe, because he is thirsty.
Question: I was thinking of playing a paladin but would divine spellcasting still work in this modern setting? I don't want my character to be crippled due to the wrong class choice for the setting.
Also, I'm really itching to play a Leonin, is there any chance I could do that here?

Don’t worry about how spells and magic will work in the modern setting, there will be no limitations on what your characters can do.
Name: Ida Gillern (Character Sheet) Race: Half orc Class: Druid (Would like to do Circle of Stars) Backstory: Ida spent most of her life within a small nomadic group. She was adopted when she was young, and recalls little of the town she was born in (and it was rarely talked about). She was taken under the wing of the group druid, a halfling named Chira, who was the guide and healer of the group. When she wasn't helping the others with chores, she was learning and aiding Chira. Many days she would stay up until the early hours, watching the night sky, learning some of its secrets. It was a busy life, but one she enjoyed. The group would rarely stop in towns, trading extra supplies or crafts they had for some things they needed. As she grew older, she started to get curious about the towns, and what knowledge they had. Some places had libraries, which had information worth several lifetimes. When she came of age, and having completed her training, she decided to leave her family, promising to find them again once she had finished her new journey. Her time on the road alone was both challenging and insightful. It had been a while since she had been on her own. She quickly learned that money was more important than she expected. She began to take some odd jobs, to help pay for some of her expenses. She heard rumors of a strange job, and soon found a pamphlet related to it. Finding it fascinating, and the gold being enough to get her into some of the libraries she wanted, she decided to check it out. Ability scores: 121512151316
Hi, Im Beelzabell. I was brought up in the circus as an entertainer and thief. While preforming I would scout out potential targets whom I later pickpocketed, which takes me to my current dilemma. You see, I ‘borrowed’ from the wrong person and now I need to make some quick money so I can disappear..
-Name Faurgar 'Grey' Chergoba -RaceWildhunt Shifter -ClassRanger (planned Monster Slayer) (using stuff from the Class Feature Variants UA) -BackstoryGrey happened to be born between generations, never quite having anyone his own age to befriend. His animalistic features didn't help this either. He became a bit of a loner, working as a hunter to help feed and clothe the village he didn't belong in. Before long, he decided to hit the road to find meaning and a place to belong in. So far he's not had much luck, but perhaps wherever this spell takes people is where he'll find a place to belong. -Ability Scores131314111311I'll go with point-buy
Name: Ciradyl Race: Pallid Elf Class:Sorcerer (Wild Magic) Backstory - Ciradyl was born in the light of the full moon. Her skin is pale like that of alabaster and her eyes as blue like a twinkling star. Her hair is long straight and so blonde it's almost white. Some in her family say she was destined for greatness due to this fortune, but she never has seen it that way. She's always had a problem keeping her powers in check. When she was starting to walk, she fell and got so angry that she pounded her fist on the ground and the area around her froze solid. Her parents skated around her abilities and always tried to keep her from getting angry. Little to their help, her powers continued to grow and have a tendency to escape when she is feeling intense emotions. She always tries to be as happy as she possibly can and took up music to help her try to keep her emotions in check and bring joy to those around her. She has a little bit of an attitude when people chastise her for her powers as she can't really control how it happens, but she is trying her best.
Eventually, she felt the pull of adventure call to her and left her home. She didn't feel bad about, she was sick of the community looking at her and scoffing at her. She's wandered around the lands for a while making money by playing her flute for crowds, always looking for a wise mage or other magic users to learn how to harness her own power. Tonight she plays for the Hog’s Belly Brewery patrons after she saw a pamphlet for advertising a hefty sum of gold for an adventure. It can't be THAT dangerous...could it? she thinks to herself. She watches the patrons come in wet from outside, looking for any sign of other adventurers that may be looking to inquire about the same information that she is. As she plays, her flute lights with a pale blue that matches her eyes. She dances lightly to lively tune hoping to make people smile and keep drinking so that her tips at the end of the night are worth it.
Alright, I'll be choosing applicants in about 24 hours from now.

-Name Arnold -Race Warforged -Class Barbarian (to-be Berserker) -Backstory Arnold was originally designed and used in The Last War as a damage resilient melee unit, made to take damage and deal damage back tenfold. However, following the end of the war, all warforged - including Arnold - were released from their duties of war. For awhile, Arnold wandered, knowing almost nothing other than war. Then, he stumbled upon a Halfling village. The village was small, and was clearly in poor shape. But to Arnold, it became... home. The people welcomed Arnold with open arms. They provided him with a home, and even tried giving him food and water before realizing he didn't need it. But most of all, they gave him purpose. It didn't take long for Arnold to realize how little the village truly had. Despite the villager's generosity for him, they didn't have much food in the first place... So, Arnold worked for them. He chopped down trees, monsters, and animals alike with his trusty greataxe, and provided the people with food, logs, and animal materials for them to use. He taught them how to do the same, as best as they were able to. He grew the village from the ground up, and was thus considered a hero in their eyes. But it wasn't enough. It was never enough. It will never be enough. This was Arnold's duty now. For once he was truly helping people, and he couldn't be happier about it. So, when one day a villager had come back from a trading expedition in a nearby town, and Arnold heard of that 5000 GP reward for anyone willing to risk their lives... He knew he had to accept, for the village... ...For his home. -Ability Scores17s used on str/con, 14s used on dex/wis, 11 used on cha, 8 used on int.
Name: Oran Moonshadow Race: Wood Elf Class: Rogue (eventual Phantom subclass) Backstory: "It's a very funny feeling, you know, being dead. It's not as empty as most people make it out to be. Death is not a void, but rather a continued connection to life. The dead are still very much with us. Believe me, because I have stared death straight in the face -- without flinching." -Oran Moonshadow Oran was born and raised in an elven village on the outskirts of human civilization. Life was good there, until a deathly plague swept the village when he was still in his youth. He and his family were all taken ill. The problem was, the illness was known to have a nearly 100% mortality rate among elves. Oran took longer than most to die -- he watched his family, and himself, suffer before they perished, and he buried all of them. But just as soon as Oran succumbed to the plague, a necromancer accompanied by multiple doctors found the village along with the dead body of Oran, who had been the last survivor who had not moved out. The necromancer was able to bring him back to life, and took him in with her. The doctors were able to restore him to full health, though he later had several respiratory problems as the after effects of the plague he had contracted. "Do you know what happened on that day I found you?" the necromancer asked him one day. "Yes," Oran replied. "I died. I saw the face of Death, and I saw my family and everyone who had died in my village. And I saw you, when I was dead, as clearly as I can see you now. I think I was dead for a few hours before you found me and... brought me back." "You have a special connection with Death," she told him. "One I haven't seen in all my years of working with... dead people. Use it well." He promised he would. And he did. Oran discovered that he could converse with the dead. He joined a local thieves' guild, working as an assassin, using the voices of the dead to enact revenge for them. Between that and his personal life, he would also take up odd jobs around Waterdeep. On this particular afternoon, Oran is in the Hog's Belly Brewery drowning himself with drinks after a particularly emotional assassin's job, and is also there to pick up a dose of medicine for his respiratory condition. He sees the pamphlet as another odd job and willingly signs up. Then he takes a second look at the pamphlet: "for any brave soul risking death." He certainly does not see himself as brave, but thinks, why not get a closer connection to death, the force that calls him forward? He cements his decision and puts his name forward.
backstory: When I was young, I strayed from my tribe one day as we were foraging in the woods. I became lost and was found a week later by a traveling circus. They told me they would help me find my way home but instead they took me to their camp and locked me up. They taught me to do Many things and I eventually became a very popular event in their circus. Although I didn't have a bad life I never forgot my tribe and how this had happened to me. so, when I was older and stronger I snuck out using the stealth and escape skills I had been taught. The city we were in at the time was the crime capital of the world so it was No wonder when I was mugged in an alley that night. The next morning, I was found by the Citywatch and taken to their base. They revived everything but my pride and I insisted on helping them track down my abusers. They were impressed with my skillfulness in finding the villains, and when we finally found them, they offered me a job as a detective and spy with another new recruit, a dwarf named Barvetine, who was to be my partner. I took the job and wary though I was about the dwarf whom I didn't know, he turned out to be very nice and more wary of me than I was of him due to my size. We quickly became best friends and we proved to be a very effective team, failing almost no missions, until the vampires. Our mission, Barvetine's and mine, was to steal back 17 rubies, stolen from a fire goddess in the heart of a volcano by a team of vampire rogues who apparently almost killed the goddess herself, and return the rubies to the volcano. At first, the mission was a success, we sneaked in, stole the rubies, and snuck out undetected-or so we thought. It turns out we tripped an invisible, silent alarm, just as we were leaving the premises. Somehow it had evaded our magic detection and it alerted a diviner working for the vampires. Apparently, the vampires weren't alerted for some time because they only caught up to us when we were at the base of the volcano. We immediately sensed them and began climbing as fast as we could, with me carrying the precious rubies and Barvetine behind me guarding our backs from the advancing rogues. Barvetine successfully blocked the constant attacks and we were just reaching the top right before dawn when something unexpected happened. So far we had only been aware of the horde climbing behind us. We had failed to notice the battalion of archers gathering at the base of the volcano. Suddenly, a signal was heard and the horde behind us all through daggers. At the same time, the group at the base of the volcano fired as well and daggers and arrows came flying at us. Barvetine did the best he could to block the projectiles, but although he kept us from being hurt, arrows struck the volcano and the goddess became angry. Right as we reached the mouth of the volcano, it began to shake, sending Barvetine and me sprawling leaving me right in the place where the most recent bout of arrows and daggers were headed. I was disoriented by my fall and did not notice the goddess rising beneath me, I was at the edge of the volcano now and she was angry that her precious volcano and gems were becoming damaged so she decided she required a sacrifice. Conveniently, I was closest to her so she immediately grabbed my legs and began to drag me, and the gems, into the volcano leaving me helpless to the volley of metal heading straight at me. Barvetine saw this and ran at me just I let go of the gems and let them fall into the depths of the volcano so that I could hold onto the rim against the burning grasp of the fire goddess. Just as the weapons were about to come into contact with my helpless head, Barvetine reached me and flung himself in front of me letting a dagger sink into his leg, an arrow in his arm, and an arrow in his chest. The others struck harmlessly around us. At that same moment, the first rays of sun shone across the land hitting the vampires skin making them scream in pain and flee to the shade of the forest below. I barely noticed the vampires, some disintegrating some barely making it to the woods, as I held to the lip of the volcano with all of my strength and watched, helpless and horror struck, as my partner staggered, stumbled, and fell into the volcanoe’s depths. A horrified gurgle started in my throat, turning into a yell and then a scream, screaming my partners named, screaming curses at the gods, screaming in my grief--in my guilt. I was about to succumb to the goddesses grasp when, to my greatest horror, she let go. The sacrifice of Barvetine and the return of her rubies satisfied her and she let go. I realized I had to avenge my partner and so, with my last remaining strength I pulled myself over the lip of the volcano back to safety. That's when the excruciating pain of the burns inflicted on my legs hit me. It was too much. I blacked out. I woke up in the hut of a powerful healer named Orga who had heard my screams and came running. It took several days, and I was never fully conscious, but she eventually healed me as best she could. I returned to the city watch who mourned the loss of Barvetine and, after months of searching for the vampires, I quit. My legs needed several more years to fully heal, and I needed to move on. Although I’ve always desperately wanted to avenge my partner, I think I can do it better on my own and I need time. I have now settled down with my own inn, the “Tequila Mockingbird”, in the city of waterdeep . I am still searching for information through my customers and still hope that one day, sooner rather than later, I can avenge my former partner, and my best friend. No one can escape me, I’m Craglin the firbolg rogue, fully healed and madder than ever, and I’m going to live for a loooong time.

-Name: Doe'Tana
-Race: Kalashtar
-Class: Circle of the Moon Druid (This is player knowledge, but will not be immediately revealed to the characters...I'm going undercover. Shhhh.)
-Backstory - Doe'Tana is the youngest of his circle, having only just recently been awakened to the presence of his Quori and the critical mission the circle provides in keeping balance in the world.

Name: Elaven Quickpaw
-Race: Swiftstride Shifter
-Class: Rogue, going for swashbuckler at level 3 but not an over the top pirate, more one-on-one duelist. Possible dip into rogue or fighter
-Backstory: Elaven grew up among others of her tribe.

Question: I was thinking of playing a paladin but would divine spellcasting still work in this modern setting? I don't want my character to be crippled due to the wrong class choice for the setting.
Also, I'm really itching to play a Leonin, is there any chance I could do that here?
Lost In Time: An Interdimensional Escapade: Baragon Starfeller - Level 2 Leonin Paladin
Out of Elysium: Rhaecus, of the Raving Drums - Level 1 Satyr Rogue
Dungeonverse: Weizol L'varr - Level 1 Eladrin Wizard
Don’t worry about how spells and magic will work in the modern setting, there will be no limitations on what your characters can do.
Feel free to play a Leonin!
I mean....I kinda have to play a chronurgist right? I would love to play as Gardeldorf's assistant.

This looks pretty fun.
Name: Ida Gillern (Character Sheet)
Race: Half orc
Class: Druid (Would like to do Circle of Stars)
Backstory: Ida spent most of her life within a small nomadic group.

Name: Beelzabell “Bell”
Race: Teifling
class: Arcane tricker rogue/bard
-Name Faurgar 'Grey' Chergoba
-Race Wildhunt Shifter
-Class Ranger (planned Monster Slayer) (using stuff from the Class Feature Variants UA)
-Backstory Grey happened to be born between generations, never quite having anyone his own age to befriend.

Name: Ciradyl
Race: Pallid Elf
Class: Sorcerer (Wild Magic)
Backstory -
Ciradyl was born in the light of the full moon.

-Name Arnold
-Race Warforged
-Class Barbarian (to-be Berserker)
-Backstory Arnold was originally designed and used in The Last War as a damage resilient melee unit, made to take damage and deal damage back tenfold.

Alright, let's try my luck.
Ability scores: 9 10 12 15 15 17
Name: Oran Moonshadow
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Rogue (eventual Phantom subclass)
Backstory: "It's a very funny feeling, you know, being dead. It's not as empty as most people make it out to be. Death is not a void, but rather a continued connection to life. The dead are still very much with us. Believe me, because I have stared death straight in the face -- without flinching." -Oran Moonshadow
Oran was born and raised in an elven village on the outskirts of human civilization.
I think I was dead for a few hours before you found me and... brought me back."
"You have a special connection with Death," she told him. "One I haven't seen in all my years of working with... dead people. Use it well."
He promised he would.
He cements his decision and puts his name forward.

craglin
rouge(scout)
backstory: When I was young, I strayed from my tribe one day as we were foraging in the woods.
