Xanktus curses under his breath and draws the iron-bound book from its holster on his left hip in one fluid flash of movement; the large circular gem on its front now glowing with a pale violet light. Looking around at the rest of the party, he mutters “Dretches... Keep some space. Don’t clump up if you can help it.”
The dretch being not particularly bright, nor fast, dash forward in an ungainly, unnerving lope. Moving their full movement and dashing still leaves them over 20 feet from the party however. As they get closer, it's easier to count their numbers, and there's a dozen of the demons. They block the majority of the corkscrewing path down, with the furthest of them from the wall knocking bits of rock and gravel down into the center of the shaft in its run foward. In addition to their pitiful wail, they begin to fill the party's mind with telepathic messages of hatred, for themselves, for the party, for the Abyss, and for existence in general.
(Xanktus is first, followed by Torrin, then Syzlet).
Planting himself before the rest of the group, Xanktus lifts the book in front of him; the round gem on its cover now glowing with the same violet light emanating from his eyes. ”Well, hope none of y’all were planning on trying to talk our way out of this.” Focusing on the page he has open in front of him, the tiefling begins uttering a series of low hissing sounds. Words, perhaps, though their direct meaning is lost to the mind. Instead, they simply seem to bring on the suggestion of a single, focused thought: OPEN!
A tiny pinprick of black energy sparks into existence in the midst of the approaching hoard. It spins in place and sputters for a moment, before a series of thin hairline cracks begin to spread out from it in all directions; creating a barely visible web of jagged dark lines encompassing a 20ft sphere. Then, all at once, the space between each crack shatters. Reality itself shifts within the space where the dretches are currently charging through.
(Casting Hunger of Hadar at level 3 directly on as many of them as I can catch within a 20ft sphere)
The dragonborn lets out a chuckle at Xanktus' statement, then lifts his long and points it at the nearest visible dretch whilst letting out a guttural phrase in draconic ((casting hunters mark)). He then lowers the blade again, and charges the dretch he marked, bringing his sword down in two swift strikes (( attack one: 18 to hit doing 7 slashing damage plus 3 extra from hunters mark, and attack two: 19 to hit doing 7 slashing damage plus 6 extra from hunters mark ))
(Can I get a count of how many are in Hunger of Hadar because if they are in there, I can't see them. I also need to tell how many aren't in the Hunger before I can respond.)

(All but 2 Dretches have been caught in Hunger of Hadar. One of which was just killed by Torrin. Xanktus, I'll need you to roll damage for the spell).
Xanktus calls forward a black, spinning spherical void, missing only the charging two demons. A soft susurrus comes from the void, along with the screams of the demons, both vocal and telepathic.
Torrin charges forward and, with two quick cuts, kills the first dretch missed by the void. It's telepathic scream mixes unnervingly with a vocal wail of the beast, as both are cut short by Torrin's blade, which is now covered by the foul smelling ichor of the demon's blood.
The other dretch just outside of Torrin's range wails at its companion's death. The mélange of wails, telepathic screams, and otherworldly whispers echo in both mind and cavern.
The Dragonborn moves onto the second visible dretch, smooth and calm in his movements, even his copper eye stays steady. He taps the side of his sword against the edge of his shield, says a quick word in draconic, then brings his sword down onto the pitiful creature twice (( bonus action moved hunters mark to the new dretch and attacking. Attack 1: 23 to hit, doing 6 slashing damage, plus 5 hunter's mark damage, attack 2: 13 to hit, doing 6 slashing damage, plus 4 hunter's mark damage. ))
(well, I guess I don't get a turn then since Contuna decided to take another turn in a row.)

Sylzet runs up to the other dretch not in the field of blackness, her sword glowing brighter for a moment as she sheathes it in energy, before her Booming Blade swings at the demon.
To Hit: 10 Damage: 14
(Of course. Of bloody course I miss by 1. why wouldn't I? Why did I expect to be useful?)

Sylzet rushes forward to attack the other dretch, but the demon pulls back at the last moment reacting to the death of its fellow. In fear, it exudes a greenish fetid gas. While Sylzet is immune to poison and thus to the gas' effects, it is nevertheless a horrific smell.
(Torrin you need to make a DC 11 Con save vs. Poison)
In fear, the rest of the dretch try to push their way out of the Hunger of Hadar. Some are too close to the edge and fall off into the abyss below, others try to push forward but are blocked by their fellows and are unable to escape the void. But a few (5) manage to break through and challenge Torrin and Sylzet.
Through a swarm of bites and claws, Torrin and Sylzet mostly hold their own, but one of the dretch claws a brutal strike across Torrin's face (critical hit: 8+3 slashing damage), while another manages a hit against Sylzet's arm, seeming more luck than skill in finding a small gap in her armor (claw: 7 slashing damage).
(OOC: Sylzet, let me know if you want to use shield as a reaction, then that strike would miss you. I'll wait a little bit to see if Zenver is going to post before continuing).
Sylzet's nose crinkles at the stench, and she hisses very snake-like as the dretch claw catches just barely into her arm. "You mongrel, you dare touch me?!" She spits in Abyssal.

((first things first, 1 con save, ooph)) Torrin's head gets flung back by the raking dretch's claw, and as it does he lets out a scream, accidentally taking in a lungful of poison. He begins to choke and cough, but it slowly turns into an almost manic laughter, as he looks back up to the pack of dretches and releases a torrent of flame from his mouth ((as many as I can fit in a 15 ft cone have to make an 11 dex save, suffering 9 fire damage on a failed save, and half on a success))
The fetid cloud that seeps out from the dretch affects Torrin as he cries out in pain. (Any creature that starts its turn in that area must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of its next turn. While poisoned in this way, the target can take either an action or a bonus action on its turn, not both, and can't take reactions.) His torrent of flame affects four of the demons (Saving throws 1. 4, 2. 9, 3. 20, 4. 8)
The one dretch directly in front of Torrin manages to mostly dodge out of the way, but the rest take the full brunt of his breath. These dretch appear to resist much of the damage of the flame. Nevertheless, their cries of anguish and wailing are pitiful and disturbing.
The cries, both telepathic and vocal coming from within the black void of the Hunger of Hadar cry out a final time and go silent.
Taking aim at the remaining dretches, Xanktus taps his cane on the ground, hissing a simple incantation as he does. A pair of small violet orbs quickly materialize beside him, floating just beside his right hand a moment before hurtling forward toward two of the remaining dretches as a thin beam.
(Two eldritch blast beams, each aimed at any of the remaining dretches)
Xanktus' violet rays both strike true, flying past Torrin and Sylzet striking two of the demons. The blasts each struck holes through the beasts dropping them immediately.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sylzet growls as she sheathes her blade in thunderous energy again as she swings at the dretch still attacking her. A thunderous REVENGE for daring to manage to touch her!
To Hit: 19 Damage: 13 + 4 Thunder.

(Oh no, I've been found out).
