You are a scholar and a TANK who won a highly covetous position as a new explorer at the Holbright Institute of Higher Magic. This illustrious group has been tasked with unearthing arcane artifacts from the ancient site of a fallen magocracy known as Ellyria. This sky city once ruled the lands below from above. For a thousand years it flourished and expanded until one day it plummeted to the earth with no documented survivors. What sets you apart from rival organizations investigating these ruins spanning hundreds of miles is the founder Gemini Holbright's belief in preservation through documentation and excavation. She champions the intent to study these artifacts for the betterment of Embera. The Holbright Institute does not sell the artifacts to the highest bidder nor do they hoard them in dank dark rooms to only be seen by members of the institute's elite. No, the Holbright Institute of Higher Magics strives to allow others to study the artifacts as well as possibly replicate these wondrous works if they prove to have no malice in their purpose. Why? Because arcane magic has all but faded from the lands of Embera. Now, less and less of Embera's people can call on its boons arcane or divine and the capital city of Zozobra of the New Republic scholars at the Holbright Institute of Higher Magics are trying to reverse the curse, a six hundred-year-old mystery that begun with the cataclysm that brought Ellyria down from the heavens, that seemingly begun the end of the arcane as Emberains knew it. The time period is now known as the Spell Plague the growing risk of wild magic surges has increased tenfold as control over the arcane has all but faded from the lands.
The hook:
As a new sinister mist envelopes the already perilous ruins, new opportunities arise for nobles and common folk alike. The Holbright Institute of Higher Magics believes your skillset would be highly beneficial during a private expedition and have requested that your investigations be kept discreet as not to draw covetous attention. Assess the surrounding area, record your findings, and secure valuable artifacts for further research. And beware of what lies in the mist...

3. Arion is a relatively young cleric of Corellon. He is descended from ancient elven nobility, but his family is no longer considered such. Even so, he is proud of his lineage. He grew up in a small cottage in the forest, learning how to forage and fend for himself with the guidance of his parents. He was once walking in the forest when he fell into a lake. He surely would have drowned if he hadn't been pulled from the water by a luminous figure. He didn't get a good glimpse of the figure, but he thought he saw silvery skin and the edge of a feathered wing. He took this as a sign he would be needed as a servant of the divine, and began studying as a cleric. Before he left home to spread light through the world, his parents gifted him a cloak of elvenkind. He heard about the Institute from a friend, Miles "Nargels" Starbow.

His father left him before he was born. He was well educated and studied arcana and the decline of magic, as well as druidic magic and it's continuing power. He is called Nargles by his friends for an embarrassing incident in middle school he doesn't want to talk about. Thiricus is about 6' tall and weighs slightly less than 200 pounds.

Backstory: Alion was born and raised in a city of learning. He was the only child of Celerion and Nemiriel Xilonodel. He was doted on by his parents, and had a happy childhood. As he grew older, he began to see the darker side of the world. He decided to figuratively take up the torch in Mielikki’s name and spread goodness, driving evil and nargels back and protecting innocents.
His father died when Alion was 45, in a freak accident. His mother, an adventurer herself, was infected with werebear lycanthropy. Alion left home shortly after, and sought out a knightly order dedicated to driving back evil. Upon being granted entry, he was gifted a suit of mithral armor. He became close friends with another Knight, a human named Miles Brightwood, after a battle they fought side by side. He has heard about the Institute and decided that the mists likely veil evils to be smitten.

Guardian was commissioned to be built by a wealthy nobleman to be a bodyguard for his young daughter. Over the next five years he was with Aneera at all times, including her tutoring sessions. Due to these circumstances Guardian ended up with a higher education level than many of his kind. Aneera was a precocious and high spirited youngster and was pulled out of quite a few hairy situations by Guardian. Aneera passed away at the age of twelve from an unexpected illness and the noble, no longer having a need for him sent him to the Holbright Institute of Higher Learning hoping that he could be of service to them. Guardian was devasted by the loss of his charge and gladly went to the institute as be could no longer handle being around so many reminders of his beloved Aneera. He keeps a small Nargel figurine that belonged to Aneera with him always. Aneera’s father presented Guardian with a magical shield before he left for his years of unwavering service to his daughter. He threw himself into his work there and gained the attention of some of the higher ups. He was given the opportunity to be a part of an exploration group going off to the ancient site of a fallen magocracy known as Ellyria.

See above, I'm afraid to move them for fear of the manipulated dice shame!
Phifhillin Alivak was born into a small gnomish burrow outside the ruins of Ellyria to a long line of gnomish wizards and metalsmiths. In recent centuries the Alivak clan's connection to arcane magic has faded, suffering from the same fate that has plagued all of Embera. This was extremely problematic for Phifhillin's ancestors who became less able to rely upon their own magics to protect their burrow. At some point in the distant past, the Alivak clan seemingly lucked into a maul of warning, inscribed with ornate infernal runes. The maul has assisted the clan in avoiding many of the local dangers--despite the gnomes inability to wield the weapon--and has been passed down to Phifhillin, the eldest of his generation. Alongside the maul, Phifhillin retains the journal from his grandfather Nargel, the last Alivak wizard of any note--who spent many of his days attempting to discern the hidden origins and power behind the maul. Phifhillin became obsessed with continuing his grandfather's legacy at a young age. Though the arcane power of wizards continues to elude Phifhillin, the gnome has had some luck studying and becoming an amateur practitioner of the runic magics known by giants. Phifhillin took up this line of study both in an attempt to further discern the maul's runes and in the hopes of one-day having the strength and stature to wield the maul. After many years of study, Phifhillin felt his ability had been stretched to its breaking point and he would no longer be able to advance grandfather Nargel's studies. Therefore, the gnome traveled with the maul to the Holbright Institute of Higher Magics, seeking further guidance in his own journey.
I really enjoy taking flawed character concepts with high RP potential and pushing them to their limit (small character that has trouble wielding his heavy weapon, but can temporarily overcome through class features) . In addition to the backstory, Phifhillin would be a gnome with a sizeable chip on his shoulder, always ready to stick up for the small guy, sick of being looked down upon, and with a bit of an inferiority complex.

Backstory: Fe wasn’t always a warforged. Once, according to those who’d been able to determine, she’d been an elf, a talented practitioner of the ancient art of Bladesinging. Which, she supposes, explains the shatterspike blade embedded in her forearm. Her memories are faint and confusing, and often deeply unsettling. She was found by a previous expedition of the Holbright Institute, and it’s been a long time of recovery, restoration and repair. It appears there is no way of removing the metal that now forms her body - at least, not with the knowledge of the arcane that is currently available. Permission to join an expedition - the risks and concerns endlessly debated - has been a long time coming - but this may be the only way to understand what has happened to her.
Notes: So, wizards aren’t traditionally a tank class. However! A Bladesinger has a +int to AC - add to that Mage armour, dex bonuses and warforged resilience, and you have a base AC of circa 20. Add to that mitigation spells (shield, absorb elements, blur...) the potential to find magic items (bracers of defence, displacer cloaks, and so forth) and Bladesinger are both very hard to hit, and a frontline fighter that’s very capable of pulling aggro from basically everything and everyone.
Pausing recruitment. Please all who applied, stand by.
