The path cuts through the forest, lined with trampled leaves and underbrush. A recent rain has left the soft dirt a mushy mud. Finally you come to a small clearing in the bushes, at which point you see the farmhouse. It is in surprisingly nice shape, painted a rather vibrant red color. A single lantern hangs outside the door front door.

Campaigns: Rod of Nankon, Darkness Reborn, Dungeonverse, Alycron - A Cosmic Horror West Marches (Co-DMing), One-on-Ones
Thavriol slows to a stop as they enter the clearing and carefully surveys everything: the house, the grounds, the fields, the trees around the clearing. Everything. Nothing can be taken for granted outside the wall...and not much inside them, either.
(OOC - hey guys. So I'm going to try and pick up where Jumpier left off for you. I have a few of his notes but this may play out a little different to how he wanted, but we'll work it out :) )
As you all approach the farmhouse, Alix, Thavriol and Sienna look out over the fields, noticing that very little is happening on a farm that would usually be quite busy by this time of day. However, Nolla spots movement at the farmhouse, as a grizzled man looks out from a hiding spot, crossbow in hand and pointed at your group. He says nothing, as a slight breeze washes across the farm, swaying the lantern near the door, causing it to squeak and groan.
Thavriol approaches the man cautiously, not wanting to alarm but also not assuming anything is what it seems. Out in the wild, assumptions were deadly. He continues to keep a careful watch, on the the man, the farm, the building, everything. When they get close enough, he once again calls on his connection to the divine to discern if the man is evil, or fiend, or undead, or celestial, and, indeed, if any such is nearby. He is actually expecting to detect such. In the wild, it's better to expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised.
Perception 9 ooc: Activating Divine Sense once he is 60' from the man. Assuming he is what he seems...
"Greetings, Master Farmer. My name is Thavriol Cooperson, a paladin dedicated to the service of Tyr, Lord of Justice. I, and my companions, have heard of your plight and have come to offer assistance. Please, how may we help you?"
After finishing her round of the yard Nolla moves to join the others, nodding as the question is asked of the man in the house. She waits for a response.
Sienna also approaches behind Thavriol locking eyes with the man and raising her hands as though in surrender trying to gauge his reaction to the strangers in his porch
"Perhaps you could also lower the crossbow, we mean you no harm as you can see we have our own weapons stowed"

Sienna Fulgurflash, Bard 3- Child of the Stormy Sea - Alycron West Marches
Thavriol gets no sense of anything sinister from his Divine Sense and as he and Sienna indicate peace and that they are there to help, the man lowers his crossbow slightly and steps out, scanning the surrounding area once again as he does.
"The name's Hurdig," the older man says then spits in the dirt, "Glad someon' came from that blasted town. Tryin' ta get some help fer a few days now. Blasted things ha' taken all me hands. I'll ne'er get everythin' done without 'em." He spits again. Hurdig eyes you all up and down, sizing you up, then after a moment gives a shrug, "Have ta do." He turns and starts trudging off into the fields, waving a hand for you to follow.
"Started me farm here 'cause it be better 'an the soil 'round Trish'," he says to you all as he walks, "An' we was right. Crops grew quick an' lush. Don't look that way now though, sowin' season see." He stops for a moment and bends down to pick up some soil in his hand, sniff it, put a tongue to it, then nods and drops it back down. "Had a sink hole or somethin' show up near one o' me fields. On the side o' one o' the hills nearby. Big 'nough fer a man ta walk in." He stops again and looks each of you up and down again, looks at the two humans and says, "Hope ya brought somethin' with ya ta see in the dark." Then turns and continues on a little further before stopping and pointing to a large hole in the side of one of the mounds of earth beside his fields, approximately 120ft away. "See, that there is the hole. Big 'un, ain't she. Me hands kept tellin' me that they thought somethin' were watchin' them, but I ne'er thought anythin' o' it. Simple folk, just makin' up stories an' such. But then they started disappearin'. Three in total. An' some o' me harvested crop as well. Don't know what's down there, but then I ain't no crazy adventurer runnin' after danger," he stops as he says this, realising who he's talking to and gives a little cough.
"We'll have a look." Nolla says with a nod, giving the man a bemused smile. She moves to the opening and looks around for tracks to see if she can identify what might be inside...
Nolla easily finds several tracks leading into the cavern. Some obviously belong to the farm hands, but there are also several sets of tracks belonging to what looks like large spiders (ie. small creatures in D&D talk).
"Looks like spider tracks to me." Nolla says as she studies the ground. She glances to the others. "I'll need a torch when we go in, unless someone has the ability to make a magical light."
