I've had many characters, but one of my favourites was Scrap Yeekon, a goblin alchemist Artificer. The group didn't really have a session 0 and the campaign was much less serious than I had realised, so his backstory and personality didn't really fit, prompting me to make a different character and use Scrap somewhere else.
Scrap escaped his tribe after they tried to kill him for being too squeamish (he couldn't stand the sight of blood). For a couple of years he travelled around the land, where he would scrounge up enough money to buy a room in the cheapest taverns and inns he could find, wherein he would invariably yet kicked out after his ancestry was discovered. At some point, he came across a badly-damaged rogue Monodrone, who he fixed up over the course of a year or so, discovering his love for tinkering. His goal was to eventually start up a workshop where he could work on his alchemical experiments somewhat safely.
I googled way too much information about the flammability of mayonnaise for my character. Don't ask.
(Asks about the mayo)

Hannibal Askani-Son - Half-Elf Ranger who wanders the land. His home is gone but he isn't out on some quest for vengeance, he wanders and never really settles. Is looking for meaning, but while not sure what that it will be, he thinks he will know the sign if he sees it.
Mithandri the Grey - Retired Knight Errant, now a sort of Don Quixote type whose glory days are behind him, but still feels he has some adventures left in him. Was dismissed from court due to calling another noble a Coward. Drinks often to forget a certain dungeon of horrors he stumbled upon and feels immense guilt that he survived and his traveling companions did not. The Grey is the type of man who is an example of beware the man who is old in a profession where the young perish.
Lakshmi Darkholder - Assassin. A believer in spinning blood into coin. However, while a killer for hire, she has a certain criteria that she will follow. What that could be? You would have to ask. Will not talk about where she comes from and has a soft spot for the elderly.

Uh
Okay
So I created an Alchemy Jug
And the party was going to fight an evil wizard
And we knocked the wizard unconscious
Tied him up
And then the other party members wanted to waterboard him
With the mayo
Then one player had the genius idea of tying the wizard's hands together
In a bag full of mayo
Their thinking was that mayo contains eggs, which contain sulphur, which is explosive
So if the wizard casts Fireball he'd blow himself up
So we just left this wizard stark naked off the side of a road
With hands and a mouth full of mayo
And mayo kind of became the party's thing
I ended up doing too much research on the sulphur content of mayo
Turns out that mayo isn't actually very flammable, unfortunately. While it does ignite, it kind of needs a sustained flame to burn.
One of my favorites was Talarys Hopebringer, a Tiefling Paladin.
Originally I had created him (pre-pandemic) for a game that was played at a brewery (they hosted a game every Weds) that had a high level vampire feel to the overall game (I believe vampires ruled over several small islands, and the groups were allied with people to take the vampires down - but it was a really, really, really long overarching campaign). However, a few things happened, that I ended up dropping out of that. But I always loved the character - the idea of this demonic looking (Tiefling) being a Paladin of light and good. It was very much the Nightcrawler feel from the X-Men.
Luck would have it, with some very minor changes - a Curse of Strhad game came up I could attend.
The story had been he'd been a twin - and had a sister, who oddly was born an Aasimar. He'd been born first and discarded into a small raft in a river and sent down river. When his sister was born, she was bright and beautiful. So the parents never spoke of her brother. However, she would eventually grow up to be a Fallen Aasimar, perhaps touched by her brother's darkness. Separated at birth, she grew up having a good life, until the darkness began to consume her. For my character, he was found by gypsies and raised and given the name Talarys (which in their tongue meant The Darkest Light/The Darkest Night) and then Hopebringer, believing he would help destroy an ancient evil.
So my character (and my friend's character, who was the fallen aasimar sister) end up in The House of Horrors (with others) and feel strangely connected. We go through quite a few sessions before I find a specific sword (leaving out spoilers) and the light shines a light on my memory - and everything is revealed.
I absolutely love writing character backgrounds and even opened a thread on Order of the Stick (if folks are familiar? I imagine everyone is? I hope?) offering to write up character backgrounds for people, and it's done remarkably well. <3

[REDACTED]
I recently had an idea for a Giff Champion fighter named Hippocrit.
Characters and NPCs with interesting names that I’ve actually played/ran:
Only spilt the party if you see something shiny.
Ariendela Sneakerson, Half-elf Rogue (8); Harmony Wolfsbane, Tiefling Bard (10); Agnomally, Gnomish Sorcerer (3); Breeze, Tabaxi Monk (8); Grace, Dragonborn Barbarian (7); DM, Homebrew- The Sequestered Lands/Underwater Explorers; Candlekeep
You are incredibly good at naming charachters i am very impressed

Thanks! My gaming group likes to offer suggestions, so some of these were team efforts. :)

As far as names go, I would really like to play Horton the Loxodon Warlock of the Great Old One.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
