I am working on a backup character for a campaign I am in and I am stumped on character ideas...What I have so far for a brief concept is a Female Water Genasi Pirate who will be class wise I think Battlemaster/Swashbuckler....I had a few ideas of searching for a certain item or getting back a ship but that seems a little cliche...personality wise I have ideas of being very flirtious not one to back down from a good barfight and very stubborn. any help to flesh her out more would be great.
Not backing down from a fight and being stubborn could be a good base.
"Coming from a poor family, you took what jobs you could get your hands on. One of these jobs turned out to be a deckhand on a ship. Turns out this ship was a pirate ship. Over the years you shared in the good loot that was taken and slowly worked your way up to the role of Quartermaster on the ship. But this wasn't enough for you. You wanted a ship to call your own.
A few years later you left that ship, taking some loyal crew with you, and bought your own small pirate ship. The first half year went well, good loot and a good increase in reputation. You became good friends with the captain of another ship and both of you pitched in to share command of a larger ship to hunt bigger game.
Another 5 months of good pirating came to an abrupt end when you overestimated your ability and tried to take a large merchant vessel. The other captain was doubtful you could pull this off, but you managed to convince them to take it. During the fight many crew were lost, as was the ship. You woke up ashore, no-one around you, surrounded by bits of ship. From a washed up crate you are to scavenge a few things to sell to whatever town was nearby. During your travels you learn of another survivor, the other captain, who has vowed revenge against you if you survived the battle.
Now you know you need to gather a new crew and weapons to survive this call for vengeance."
Potential backstory. The other captain possibly has a powerful weapon or artifact that prevents going after them right now. They could also have some of their loyal crew that survived.
Another avenue you could take is that you were employed by the navy to find the pirates secret island/hideout/etc. so you joined a pirate ship. Seeing that pirating would earn you more money, you threw away your naval contract and just became a pirate. Sometime during your pirating you raid a navy vessel which has a list of informants (or something like that) on it and the crew finds your name on the list.
They make you walk the plank and leave you floating in the ocean as they sail away. Luckily they don't know that you can breathe underwater. So although it is a long trek back to civilisation, you do eventually make it. You find yourself a long way away from anywhere you know. With no other conceivable way to make a living, you decide to try and find your way back to a naval base to fulfill your old contract.
Also maybe going after vengeance once you get stronger as well against the captain/crew on that one
I play a female water genasi pirate named Nerida, and hoooo boy is she an absolute blast, 20/10 do recommend .
Mine is a swashbuckler rogue. Flirtatious by default, unapologetically selfish, hella queer, bit of a klepto but yknow, pirate. She's not very smart nor wise, but she's cunning as hell.
A love for the sea, for freedom, is a good start. Perhaps she's been chasing a treasure deep in the ocean, and unbeknownst to her or will lead her to discovering secrets about her own djinni heritage? Perhaps she isn't after just a ship of her own but one to hunt down they legendary man eating shark or harpie or kraken that killed her previous crew, or lover, sank her last ship? Maybe she's running from a captain she tried to mutiny against and failed at?
Flirty and stubborn are excellent, but if you start with goals and fears you'll really figure out some fantastic characterization.
