Anyone looking for help with characters? Or feeling like sharing some input on others creations? Whether it be rp choices, development, or ideas, this is the place to be. Please feel free to share your character related questions!
I have a few questions about a character I'm creating. She is a NPC in an adventure I am currently creating. Her name is Tapeesa, a huntress in a tribe that resides in the arctic tundra. She is not one for conversation, and she spends much of her time exploring the tundra on her own.Though she is the only female hunter in the tribe, she is easily one of the most skilled in her craft. Although she would never admit it, she can be observed helping those in need when it doesn't't draw attention to her. Tapeesa has an attitude and is fierce in both conversation and combat.
As I have been writing this adventure, and developed her as she is an important NPC in the adventure, I found that I may want to help her around, and have decided to create a character sheet for her. My question is, as she is a fighter, what fighting style do you think fits best? Also, what alignment do you think fits her character?
Fighting style that would best fit would be archery or great weapon fighting. Archery because most hunters use a bow. Great weapon fighting if you have her using a spear two-handed or some sort of polearm since that would be other type of weapons a huntress would use. Alignment, based on what you have given us to work with, I'd say would be leaning mostly towards chaotic good or true neutral.
In my opinion, a huntress such as this would probably fair better as a hunter ranger. If you would provide more information on what weapons she uses the most would help us with the best fighting style. Armor type would also help as would her stats.
Anything else just ask.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
Thank you! I have been thinking about the idea of her as a ranger. She is most likely going to be using a spear, because I think it fits her character and environment. She has hide armor as furs, although rare in her home village, are best for weathering the cold.
Ranger gets you Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer... and, in Mordenkainen's Codex of Allies, there's the Warden Conclave that totally fits at level 3.
Might be overkill, since this is "just" an NPC, but... it's as important as you want it to be.
Haha yes I know what you mean XD She does play a part as a teammate for the PCs for a long period during the adventure but it might be overkill as you said.
However, DnD_Berzerkerwhat is your take on adapting an NPC into a PC? I am both a DM and a player at times and I'm still relatively new (about a year under my belt), so I was wondering what you thought of this kind of adaptation?
I know there are DMs that say you shouldn't have an NPC as part of the party and there are others that don't mind. The argument against is that you know what is going on, where the traps are, where ambushes are set up, weaknesses, etc. I tried playing a character and being a DM and it didn't work for me, because I could metagame to my character's advantage. That being said, some people can separate it well, while others can't (me being the later). Now if you had a player take over the NPC then that's not an issue. Your NPC should mainly only be there to give advise, guide them to a location, sell items, etc. What a lot of DMs see is a DM that wants to be a player and therefore should be on the other side of the screen and let someone who doesn't care if they play or DM be the DM. I'm the type that say go for what you think is best and modify it as needed. If you find yourself like me and metagaming, you should then separate them from the adventuring part and go more for the support.
I hope this was helpful. I'm not trying to be negative about a DM playing in the party but just trying to point out some of the things that could come up at the table.

Not negative at all WeldingBear! I totally see where you're coming from and I'll definitely think about it. I guess what I was trying to say was what do you think about using that NPC later on, only as a PC. What I mean is exporting that character into another campaign in the same universe. My friends and I like to delegate the DM role between the players who know how. So I may be DMing this campaign, but later might come a time where I am introducing a new character or a character previously met by the party. What are your thoughts on this type of play? We have only done this with one party. My close friend who I play most with is in a party with me in which we are both players.
That makes more sense. Doing that is good as long as you like the character that you create and think that it'll be a good fit. You never want to play a character that you don't like or end up hating. If you like the concept and how it plays out then by all means go for it and fun.

My brother recently started a campaign, and we've only had one session so far. But the next ones coming up, and I know RP is pretty important/helpful in setting the mood. My character is a Rogue Assassin, with the urchin background, and her backstory in a nutshell is: learns street skills from her parents in the slums of her city, creating the foundation for her future as a thief/assassin, and eventually growing tired of the work, going in search of a more honest life (but she still uses her skills when need be, a.k.a. a lot). Though she is naturally quiet, calm, and watchful, she also has high prof. in all charisma skills, save for performance. So if my rogue is good with words, I need to be too if I want to display her character well. However, I'm hopelessly shy with people I don't know well, and tend to silently watch and participate (though I still have fun). Any tips or ideas for practicing and/or improvising my rogue's attitude, personality, reactions, etc.?
Hey Morrigan_the_Rogue! I totally know how you feel! I was the same way when I started out, and I had a lot of trouble "being" my character.
Here are some tips that might help!
Know your character.
1. The more you know about about your character (her motivations, morals, experiences, etc.) the easier it is to react in the moment. You might want to take some time out of the game and answer questions about how she would react in hypothetical situations. Maybe try taking quizzes as your character (personality tests, buzzfeed quizzes, and so on) to get a look into the innermost workings of her personality. Who knows, some of the questions you answer may come up during a session and you can feel confident answering because you have already given it some thought!
This is your game!
2. Remember, first and foremost this is a game that you are playing! As long as it doesn't blatantly defy the rules, you can pretty much play however you like! A lot of people think you have to do a voice or speak in character, but thats just one way to play. Some people are great at speaking in character and it comes naturally to them, others take more time, and some never speak in character. Find whats comfortable and most enjoyable for you in game. Don't forget, everyone can make a fool of themselves while playing, thats p[art of the fun! So don't be too worried if you don't feel comfortable speaking out often, just try your best to stay true to your character however you see fit. If you like to silently watch and participate, thats great! Just remember when you do speak in game, to make sure it makes sense for your character.
Hope this helps! Have fun and enjoy your campaign! :)
So I'm back again with more character questions! I am still working on this adventure and I am in the process of creating an enemy npc. He is the shaman/witch doctor in the enemy tribe and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions to help me create him. I don't really know where to begin. Any comments are appreciated!
Thanks!
I was thinking of using either the priest or cult fanatic as a baseline starter, but i'm not sure

Then if you are going to go the ranger route with a spear then I would recommend the defense fighting style to get you that extra AC point.
