Yeah, while I'm not with you on the need for no sub-classes, and the idea of "moving the goal posts" really only works in a system where certain spellcaster classes don't have important flavor and mechanical bits baked into the early levels, I'm not sure why the idea of a less defined, more versatile approach to differentiating members of the same class would be all that flame-worthy.
I don't think your idea for titles offers much in the way of a feeling of progression either. I too remember back to my 2nd ed days and the titles that accompanied leveling were mostly an afterthought at best. Just because I played a Rogue, having the title of "robber" didn't mean anything to me if my Rogue was more of a sneaky fighter with some dungeoneering and stealth skills.
Anyway, interesting thought experiment either way. If 5E was designed a little differently (maybe to allow for no sub-classes like it can allow for no magic items) it might be fun to try out to harken back to older versions of the game.
