The story follows a group of strangers united by the death of a mutual friend... Duncan, an older human adventurer who left to them his family's manor, along with mysteries surrounding not only his death, but his life. The first episode focuses on the group attending Duncan's funeral, as well as exploring his manor.
The crew consists of Ash, a female elf Warlock with an elegant appearance and snarky attitude. Her past remains mysterious, but what we do know is that she's traveling with Fidget, a Goblin rogue who's quick to speak his mind. Next is Azure, a young Tabaxi Monk who is curious and eager, and a bit naive. Then there's Ricky Greensleeves, a Halfling bard who's impulsive and crude, but eager to help with entertainment and cooking. And finally there's Crush, played by me, a Tortle Barbarian and former gladiator (who sounds and acts like Macho Man Randy Savage (RIP) )
It's a homebrew campaign set in the continent of Kahena. The DM has placed a few restrictions on certain spells... in particular, teleportation spells aren't allowed, since the game will be focused on a lot of events that happen in travel. Tortles have a lifespan of around 200 years, mostly because I assumed they did when I created my character and when I realized they have much shorter lifespans in D&D we'd already written a lot of the plot around the longer lifespan, and it doesn't really impact gameplay anyway, so whatever. The most interesting homebrew feature, however, is the Deck of Fate.
At the start of each session the players may, at their discretion, draw one card from the Deck of Fate, which includes Boons and Banes, and even a few Nothing cards. For example, in the first episode one character gained resistance to bludgeoning damage, another character gained a +3 they could add to any roll they choose once before the session was over... however, another character got a -2 to all constitution checks, and another character got nothing.
The game is played through Roll20, with audio recorded from Discord. There are a few audio problems, but I'm pretty sure that's normal for any new stream.
Our group of Adventurers has survived an assassination attempt while exploring their fallen friend's family manor. After making an escape through the deadly, monster-infested hidden basement they discovered a hidden stable that once housed Griffins... and the players learned that, as far as anyone on this world is aware, Griffins are extinct. Things go from bad to worse when they find the leader of the town guard dead in his home, seemingly from natural causes. Now the group is on the move, making their way to the next town, and hopefully more answers. Follow us starting at 5:30 PST at http://twitch.tv/afterdisbooty
As the party sets out they encounter dire boars, trolls, and bandits... but worst of all they realized only one party member actually owned a tent. A minor inconvenience at first, it becomes a much bigger problem when a blizzard hits and the party is forced to build a rudimentary structure to survive the night. After trials and tribulations, they finally find their way to a main road and even manage to flag down some public transport, but they learn the town they're heading toward is busy with a mayoral election... with the person they're trying to contact on the ballot.
An encounter with two trolls in the frigid winter night took the life of the party's driver... Crush chose to take the body with them, although Ash and Fidget would have preferred to save time and leave the corpse on the side of the road. Once in town they managed to find Hitha Coldforge... mayoral candidate and lover of the dead Guard Leader. While she uses her resources to investigate the deaths, she's asked the party to investigate the local coal mines, which have been shut down due to a series of violent acts. Their only clue lies with a dwarven prisoner, who has been found guilty of murder after bashing in the skulls of his fellow miners...
The party, led by the charismatic Ricky, interviews the prisoner, learning that he has no memory of killing his fellow workers, comparing it to a traditional dwarven Berserker. Suspecting there's more to this than anyone realizes, they make their way to the closed mines... working their way past a collapsed tunnel with the help of Ash's Spider Climb spell only to encounter the angry ghost of a miner. Digging deeper they work their way past various ghosts and shadows to discover a desecrated grave of an ancient Priestess... and a work order from Coldforge's Mayoral opponent, Gilson Creshot, ordering the miners to continue to work despite any dangers. After reburying the corpse the ghost activity lightens enough to safely exit with evidence proving the prisoner's innocence, getting back to town just in time to prevent the hanging of a seemingly innocent man.
In the night, however... the Warlock, Ash and the Rogue, Fidget sneak out with Ash using Disguise Self to appear to be a helpless and lost tourist. Luring out a brigand, the two murder the criminal, with Ash absorbing his soul. As they return to bed, Ash receives a vision seeming to foretell death and tragedy at the mayoral debate scheduled for the next day...

A public debate turns deadly as an assassin targets both candidates Creshot and Coldforge. Coldforge survives thanks to Ash's quick action and the use of the Spare the Dying cantrip, although to get in position Fidget had to get past a guard with a nat 20 punch directly in the testicles, getting arrested despite his actions saving Coldforge's life. Azure uses her extreme speed as a Tabaxi monk to find the assassin, tackling him off the side of a building, but capturing him alive. Unfortunately, the assassin had a powerful acid vial hidden in his mouth, committing suicide and taking his secrets to the grave. The group is forced to keep busy while Coldforge recovers, but once she's awake enough to speak she authorizes Fidget's release, and informs the group that they need to speak to a mysterious Cleric in the town of Fellglen to the South...
A seemingly simple wagon trip is complicated when a party wagon of drunken, topless gnomes comes careening out of nowhere to slam into the players’ wagon. Luckily, between Crush’s strength and skill with woodworking, and Ash’s use of the Mending Cantrip, an hour’s delay is reduced to a few minutes... although some serious bad luck results in the driver breaking his hand, forcing him to recover in the back while Crush and Ricky take over driving duties. The travel is slowed by troll attacks, overconfident bandits, and the seemingly inescapable gnome party wagon... not to mention the party’s lack of animal handling skills resulting in the horse being worked to exhaustion.
Finally arriving in Fellglen, Ricky secures lodging in the local tavern with his musical performance. When a Goblin worker starts to hit on Ash, Fidget starts to argue in Goblin, which very nearly turns deadly. The next day is spent shopping and exploring the town, until eventually Crush and Azure speak to the local temple... while Fidget and Ricky relaxed in a nearby brothel. In order to speak to the Cleric they were sent to find, the party is told they’ll be given a test of some kind to prove their worthiness... a test which may prove impossible for the Warlock Ash, whose body literally catches fire inside the temple itself.
The crew is having a surprise Wednesday session! Join us soon at 6pm EST at twitch.tv/afterdisbooty to see what happens next
These plot summaries are starting to get more complicated...
The group is given a test to prove themselves trustworthy to the Church, but as part of the test they’re given the bare minimum of intel on a mysterious killer who has stolen sacred scrolls from the temple. All they know is to search for a woman with raven black hair whose true appearance will be revealed if she touches a holy symbol of Helm. Interrogating the local bar patrons reveals they aren’t even aware of the deaths in the temple. However, while mingling they meet Sophia, a woman going through a messy divorce, and when she wanders out into the cold drunk and surly the group decides to follow her and make sure she makes it home safe.
After escorting her to an isolated cabin, the group is surprised when Sister Merryweather, a blind cleric whom Ricky had opened up to about his survivor guilt, suddenly visits. Through a series of bad insight rolls and a botched sleight of hand to get her to touch the holy symbol, Crush wants to just force her to touch it, but the group resolves to leave them alone. Hiding outside and waiting, they don’t hear anything suspicious from the cabin, but when Sister Merryweather steps out instead of returning to town she goes even deeper into the woods.
When the group catches up to her she resists requests to touch the holy symbol, and when Crush tries to force her to hold it she retaliates with a necrotic attack, and her true form as a Hag is revealed. A brief battle ensues, with Azure keeping her paralyzed with Stunning Strikes and dealing the final blow with her tigerlike astral arms. Investigating the body reveals the Hag’s collection of fingers, including the fingers of children... and a freshly cut finger with Sophia’s wedding ring still attached. The group may have accomplished the Church’s test, but they’re left with a mix of guilt at failing Sophia, and anger at the Church for keeping secrets just to test them.
Writing these plot summaries is actually kind of helping me to sort out the game itself...
A visit to the secret temple reveals that the contact they’ve been sent to find is a Dwarven Cleric by the name of Coreo... and he’s being excommunicated. The group finds him just in time to learn he knows more about Duncan than they do, and has agreed to lead the group to the city of Transmere far to the South where Duncan kept a secret dropbox that may shed more light on the assassin group plaguing the party, which Coreo also recognizes as The Depraved Gloom.
Travel is plagued with more trolls, bandits, and even a Frost Giant who has appeared far from the mountains they normally call home. The group tries to avoid him, but he spots Ash and Crush, snatching them both up... although Ash experiences the worst as the giant rips her arm right off. Barely conscious, Fidget and Ash seek shelter while the rest of the party fights the giant, but when Coreo rushes to aid her he learns something disturbing about the secretive Warlock. None the wiser, the rest of the party assumes it was simply Coreo’s healing magic that allowed Ash to survive the horrific injury and reattach her arm.
Nearing the town of Lore’s Bend, the group finds a half-orc warrior traveling the same direction. Recognizing Crush, she reveals herself to be a fellow Gladiator. The town has recently completed construction of a Gladiatoral arena, and is christening it with a tournament, the ultimate prize of which is 1,000 Gold and a sponsorship that includes travel and lodging expenses. However, the group is wary of another rumor in town of a man murdered in town who appears to have all the life simply sucked out of his body...
While traveling, Ash started to flirt with The Bladed Snake, the half-orc Gladiator the group was traveling with. The sight of the two women getting affectionate excited Fidget and Ricky, although Ricky’s actions seemed to make the Cleric Corrio extremely uncomfortable. At a carriage stop, The Bladed Snake challenges Crush to a sparring match while the group waits for their carriage to arrive. Although she puts up a strong fight, once Crush releases his rage the damage resistance allows him to take the victory.
Once arriving in Lore’s Hamlet, the group takes the time to rent rooms at the local tavern for the night before registering for combat in the coliseum. Ricky and Corrio find some private time to discuss Corrio’s feelings, with Corrio revealing that he thought Ricky’s aggressive flirting was just mocking him for being homosexual... not realizing that Ricky is simply a pansexual pervert. However, in an attempt to bond with his new Dwarven ally, Ricky orders far too much to drink, getting too drunk to negotiate.
While Ricky sleeps it off, Ash locks herself in her room, contacting her patron and trading the Hag’s corrupted soul for more time before she’s expected to deliver him another soul. In the tavern, Corrio talks about how he struggles with anger despite being a cleric of peace, which he got from his Mother, a Dwarven Berserker who died as a result of her rage. Crush bonds with him over this, as Crush himself was a berserker at one point, and also experienced tragedy from his inability to control his rage...
Oh man... a lot happened in our last game, so there's plenty to catch up on. But if this entices you, come see what happens next at twitch.tv/afterdisbooty!
The group is awoken by a shared dream about cold, crooked fingers choking them and stealing the amulets left to them by Duncan... disturbed by this dream, they complete a ceremony using the blood from the Hag to activate protective magic sealed in their pendants. While the group is gathered, Ricky decides to confront the group to reveal their secrets, using Enhance Ability so Azure will have advantage to Insight the group in case anyone is lying.
Crush finally reveals that he was once a tag team with his sister... a 4-Elements monk who went by Crash, with Ricky’s father Tricky as their manager. When Crash chose to retire in order to focus on the orphanage she had founded, Tricky manipulated the two of them into one last no-holds-barred match... but when they learned of his deception they both agreed they didn’t want to fight. Frustrated, Tricky used the Friends cantrip to try and manipulate Crush into agreeing, but when it failed Crush was so angry at Tricky for trying to manipulate his mind that he went into a berserker rage. Tricky used illusions of children from Crash’s orphanage to try and stop Crush, but once he saw through the illusions he didn’t realize that when Ricky jumped in to protect his father it was the real thing. Crash saved Ricky’s life, but in the process was killed by a one-in-a-million swing from Crush.
Ricky, meanwhile, reveals that he blames himself for Crash’s death, thinking that she deserved to live more than him. He has also claimed to have gotten Crush’s still-legal contract signed over from Tricky, making Ricky his manager... but for now any Gladiator work Crush does is technically still done in Tricky’s name.
Fidget finally explains why he keeps getting into fights with other Goblins... his ears are horribly mangled, which is a sign among goblins meant to donate traitors. Even goblins with their own mangled ears often hate and distrust others.
Thanks to her amnesia, however, Ash isn’t questioned extensively. When asked about what type of magic user she is she simply produces a tome, and lets the group assume this means she’s a wizard. Despite a strong insight check from Azure, Ash never lies and manages to avoid suspicion.
Once the group is satisfied they go to the coliseum, where Crush and Azure register as gladiators for the next night’s activities. Crush’s reputation gets him on the roster without question, but Azure needs to prove herself in battle first. She faces against a Tiefling Monk called the Bloody Fist, who, despite having just finished another fight while the group watched, nearly defeats Azure, if not for the use of some Bardic inspiration given by Ricky before the start of the match.
The night is spent carousing and ordering some custom clothing for those planning to join the battle. Ash and Fidget find some privacy to discuss the secrets they’re still afraid to reveal to the party. Talk of sorcerers awakens Ash’s memory of time spent with her brothers, as they practice magic while she tinkers with a mechanical bird. Her reverie is interrupted, however, when she spots one of the assassins trying to mingle in with the crowd, a quick message spell to Crush results in the barbarian rushing out and tackling one of the assassins into the nearby frozen lake. While the rest of the party battles the remaining assassins, Crush manages to hold the assassin underwater long enough to drive him unconscious without killing him.
Interrogating the assassin reveals that he’s horribly cursed... unable to speak anything but Abyssal, and even then unable to reveal key information. Worst of all, though... the curse strikes the assassins with a debilitating illness, forcing them to obey their masters just to stay alive. However, the assassin is able to confirm that it was the Depraved Gloom that killed Duncan, and that they’ve been following our heroes...
I'm starting to realize this is turning into a "How was your last session" thread, but only about my own game. Still, if you want to see what happens next, join us tonight at 4:30 PM PST at twitch.tv/afterdisbooty
Corrio communes with his Goddess, who grants a miracle to cleanse the party of any disease, as well as clean the water supply. Relieved, Ricky and Azure go on a shopping trip where Ricky finds a ring of Darkvision on sale for 500 gold. He considers using some large diamonds the group found to trade for it, but Ash intervenes, explaining the value of diamonds as spellcasting material. Ricky, however, is frustrated, since Corrio never explained such a thing, with Ricky openly complaining about Clerics in general, especially after being deceived by the hag posing as a cleric. Unfortunately, Corrio hears him, retreating to the tavern to drink and cry. This brings constant tension, with Ricky seeming to especially take this poorly, putting him in an angry, confrontational mood, picking fights and arguing at every opportunity.
Things seem to calm down when the party goes to the colosseum to compete... a huge crowd is drawn, thanks to the very public battle with the assassins last night. Azure starts the night winning her battle against “Little Bruiser”, an unpredictable goblin combatant. Crush readies for his fight against The Bloody Fist, a tiefling monk who publicly takes credit for the attack the previous day, using it to make himself look like more of a Heel. Ash stays alert and finds a group of assassins preparing an attack outside of the arena. To avoid a panic, Crush continues his fight as normal while the rest of the party and a few guards confront the assassins, which have summoned a disturbing aberration made of mismatched bones and strips of flesh. Making things worse, when the monstrosity kills one of the guards, it infects his body, transforming him into another aberration.
Crush wins his battle, unable to stay and enjoy the cheers as he rushes out to join his party, convincing the Bloody Fist to join and help. With the full group finally together, the assassins and monsters are defeated. However, the party members are all in bad shape, with health low and resources spent... which wouldn’t be a problem, except that the tournament is still ongoing, with Crush and Azure both expected to continue fighting...
The game is heating up, and if you want to see what happens next you can join us at twitch.tv/afterdisbooty tonight at 5:30 PM EST. If you want to know what's going on without having to watch all the previous episodes, just read on:
Following the attack from the assassins, the death of two volunteer guards is enough to get the rest of the event delayed until the next day. Several of the party members are magically diseased, but Ricky’s able to identify the disease and knows that it will be healed by a long rest.
The next day they choose to question the living assassin to learn if there is anything more they can learn... Ricky uses the Friends Cantrip to improve negotiations, but as Ash is the only one who speaks abyssal she translates everything... until Ricky asks about Kenneth Malgrove, the man murdered in Lore’s Hamlet and mysteriously drained of all life. The assassin denies involvement, but Ash claims he said the Depraved Gloom had taken him out for learning too much. However, Azure had used her Visage of the Astral self to keep an eye out for deceptions, and realized there’s something Ash isn’t telling them.
Although suspicious, the other group members discuss it and decide not to pressure Ash, since she’s proven herself more than once to the group. Everyone then returns to the arena to complete the tournament. Azure wins her fight against a deep gnome rogue going by the Opal Fist, and with Crush once again defeating The Bladed Snake the final contest ends up being between Crush and Azure. After not using her Astral Arms the entire tournament, Azure finally releases them so she can get past Crush’s Rage resistances. Still, the Tortle’s thick shell and wealth of hit points is too much for her to overcome, and Crush is declared the winner.
Crush is rewarded a trophy and 1,000 Gold, which he shares with the rest of the party. The referee is then revealed to be Franklin Hamlet, better known as F.H.: a gladiatoral enthusiast who wishes to sponsor Crush and Azure. Coincidentally, he had retired from sponsoring gladiators around the time Crush had retired as well, with the two lovers of the craft returning, unable to resist the allure of the ring.
The party celebrates Crush’s victory with drinks and revelry, and even an impromptu drinking contest, which ends with Crush’s victory. However, when a drunken Ricky stumbles into bed the helpful Corrio tries to help Ricky lay in a pillow, which Ricky mistakes for affection and suddenly kisses the shy cleric. The next morning, Ricky finalizes Crush’s sponsorship with F.H., and after quickly picking up the custom dark vision boots they had ordered for Crush the party makes their way to a nearby Carriage stop, making their way to the nearby river to try and charter a ferry South. After an attack from a dire boar and an attempted highway robbery, the ride seems to go smoothly… until Ash suddenly collapses, vomiting black bile and appearing to be dead.
As the party panics, Fidget draws his dagger, afraid that the group will turn on him and Ash once they learn the truth. However, the group is insistent, and Fidget finally relents… revealing that Ash is Undead, although Fidget doesn’t want to reveal too many of Ash’s secrets while she’s passed out. He even reveals that Ash herself is completely unaware that she occasionally vomits black bile when passing out. Once the group arrives they manage to miss the ferry, forcing them to charter a private boat ride. Once the group has privacy, Crush decides to confront Ash about her condition, revealing that he’s started to notice that she doesn’t appear to breathe.
In spite of her discomfort, Ash finally reveals what she can. Fidget tells the story of how he met Ash when still with his Goblin horde, finding her seemingly dead with a giant sword wound across her chest. Once she awakens, the two bonded and chose to head out on their own. Ash’s amnesia isn’t part of her deception… in addition, whatever is allowing her to attempt her facsimile of life, also literally prevents her from speaking about certain specifics. So even with Ash finally speaking openly about her condition, there’s ultimately many secrets she still keeps.
We're having a surprise Monday game! Come check us out at twitch.tv/afterdisbooty at 4:30 PM PST. If you missed the previous episode, read ahead to see what happend:
The boat ride to Yarland’s Fork is only briefly slowed by a bandit attack, but Fidget’s crossbow and Ricky’s magic is more than enough to dispatch the attackers. In the night a school of salmon are seen swimming upriver, and the group uses some of Crush’s javelins as makeshift spears to catch a few for Ricky to cook… although now that her true nature as an Undead is revealed, Ash no longer feels the need to eat in front of the party, only eating enough to enjoy the flavor. Speaking of flavor, once in Yarland’s Fork Ash immediately seeks out an upperclass cafe, spending 15 gold on a tea party served with exotic teas, rich, flavorful coffee, delicate pastries and the freshest fruits and vegetables available. The delicacy is lost on most of the party, but just for fun Fidget convinces Azure to try some extra strong espresso, who is immediately filled with the urge to run… and Ricky convinces her to let him ride piggy-back so he can experience the kind of speed only possible with a Tabaxi monk.
Once out on their own Azure and Ricky find themselves in the shady part of town, where Ricky is distracted by a seductive prostitute offering both herself and Blue Pixie, a rare hallucinogenic drug. While Ricky is distracted, a trio of attackers sneak upon Azure, intending to kidnap and rob her. Meanwhile, Crush gets bored with the tea party and opts to try and follow them, tracking his friends just in time to hear a tiger’s roar.
The kidnappers were unprepared for Azure’s astral arms. While she quickly knocks the human leader unconscious, his goblin minions attempt to escape… only to be snatched by Crush as he follows Azure’s roar. Figuring he’s been duped, Ricky uses Hideous Laughter to incapacitate the woman distracting him as he goes to see what’s going on. A brief argument ensues as Ricky attempts to simply buy drugs from the robbers and let them go with a warning, upsetting Corrio when he’s caught lying about his motivation: claiming that he just wants the drugs off the street. Instead, Crush and Azure simply turn in the criminals to the local guard, where the leader is revealed to be a notorious kidnapper and pimp with a 500 gold bounty on his head. Although the money is welcome, learning more about the criminals only upsets Corrio more since Ricky was willing to let them go.
To try and smooth things over, Ricky uses his bardic skills to arrange lodging in a nearby tavern, and pays out of pocket for rooms for the rest of the party… except for Fidget, who rents a lavish suite to get some alone time with Ash. While Ash and Fidget try out their new bed, Corrio leaves to try and cool his head, with Azure following to make sure nothing happens to him. Crush and Ricky have a heart-to-heart, discussing Ricky’s past and his negative view on his self-worth. Ash and Fidget come into the dining area, with Fidget changed into a rented robe, encouraging Crush to check on Azure and Corrio… mostly as an excuse to distribute the drugs Ricky had secretly pocketed earlier without anyone noticing. Still, Fidget manages to prod Ricky enough for Ricky to reveal that he had been in love once with a Cleric, but things fell through when he was forced to leave and learn his bardic college.
All this time, Azure and Corrio had found a bench in front of the nearby temple. The two of them bond, but being so inexperienced herself Azure struggles to give Corrio much advice, although she does encourage meditation. When Crush arrives he reveals some of Ricky’s erratic behavior around Corrio… Ricky had been engaged to a half-elven cleric named Jem, but when Ricky was kidnapped by his own father and forced into studying his bardic college, Jem was told that Ricky had simply abandoned him, and over time he moved on and is now engaged to marry someone else. Although this soothes Corrio a bit, he’s still struggling to keep his anger in check, so to help explain how he controls his own anger Crush tells the story of how he got injured in the past so severely that he essentially needed to retrain from scratch to start fighting again.
After killing Crash, he went on a bender, essentially trying to get himself killed in the ring. Eventually he made his way to the southern beach, where as a young Tortle he and Crash had swam from their birthplace on the Esmer islands to the mainland as a rite of passage into adulthood. Abandoning all his possessions, he entered the water, fully intending to simply drown, as even a Tortle can only survive underwater for so long. By some miracle, he witnessed two young tortles who were coincidentally also making the rite of passage to adulthood, but also saw a group of Merrow stalking them. Resigning himself to die in combat and fully unarmed, Crush attacked the Merrow. In that moment he felt a connection to the sea, as if the waves themselves were guiding his strikes, until in the end he was left barely alive facing the leader alone. The only thing that allowed him to survive was a freak tidal wave that sent him to shore, with injuries so dire he couldn’t even move for days, nursed back to health by the same Tortles he had rescued.
After his tale Crush is suddenly hugged by Corrio and Azure, and the trio returns to the tavern to listen to Ricky’s music and enjoy a banquet Fidget had ordered along with his expensive suite. The tension finally lifted as they enjoyed the night, resolving to take a brief vacation in Yarland’s Fork for everyone to decompress. However, Crush’s idea of a vacation is revealed when he overhears a pair of dwarves discussing a seemingly haunted building in town, and a 500 gold bet to spend the night and cleanse it of ghosts. Eager for the challenge, enough of the group decides to face the ghosts and have an adventure just for fun, while those who opposed end up agreeing, if only to keep their more foolish party members safe.
I'm not sure if our games are just getting more complicate or if I'm just getting worse at summarizing, but we've got another long recap of our previous game...
The day starts with the party seeking out pastries… Crush and Ricky find the local bakery which they both remember from their last visit to Yarland’s Fork decades ago when Ricky was still a child. The party is ecstatic to try their famous “big as your head” cinnamon rolls… although Ricky is struck with embarrassment when he recognizes the baker, remembering that he accidentally called her “mom” the last time he was there. From there, the party finds a local artificer, where Ricky purchases a novelty knife that sings when swung through the air, and Crush has his axe silvered to help fight the ghosts that supposedly reside in the infamous “Death House”. The artificer is familiar with the reputation, revealing that the house is located next to the local cemetery and once belonged to a blacksmith, but one night his entire family was slaughtered, and each time someone tried to move in after the also met a gruesome fate. Unphazed, the group decides to speak to the guard captain to learn more and possibly gain permission to enter the home.
However, before they leave, the sight of the artificer’s equipment awakens another memory in Ash. She remembers constructing something with fine gears… large adult hands guiding and instructing her, and a male voice speaking a name… Promethea. Still overwhelmed by this memory, Ash remains outside of the guards’ quarters while the rest of the party negotiates with the guard captain. The captain reveals that at least 38 people have died in the Death House, and the local clerics recommended not simply destroying the house, lest the spirits inside escape. To try and keep people away, the town had started a 100 gold fee just to attempt to stay in one night, with the gold intended to cover any funeral expenses that would arise. The group agrees to the terms, with the promise that, should they succeed, the 100 gold would be returned to them.
The group next seeks out a general store… among the usual supplies, Azure seeks out instructional books with the intent to mail them back home to her monastery, to help preserve knowledge. For herself, however, she purchases a large tome… The Legend of the Monster Squad (a cheeky in-joke for the players, as it essentially recounts the events of our previous campaign). Ricky, however, chooses to purchase some painter’s supply and a sketchbook which he immediately uses to draw a crude, childish drawing of Ash pouring sugar on his dick. Ash seems bemused by the whole thing, but Fidget makes a scene about it, which attracts the attention of a passing woman who sees the crude image and immediately starts shrieking in shock and disgust. This attracts a local guard who’s ready to fine Ricky for public indecency… but in a bizarre attempt to prove his innocence, Ricky draws a crude drawing of the guard helpfully marked “Officer PeePee.” In another bizarre move, when the officer attempts to arrest him, Ricky responds by grinding against him and moaning erotically, attempting to make the guard too uncomfortable to arrest him, although this plan immediately backfires. The rest of the party struggles to help, as it’s essentially impossible to convince the guard not to arrest Ricky at this point. Ricky, however, spots a chance at escape when another guard approaches to see what’s going on, and Ricky successfully convinces him that the first guard had propositioned him and forced him to take part in this. The tables are turned, with the first guard now getting arrested and Ricky freed, only to find himself facing a disappointed and angry Crush and Corrio.
While the two are admonishing Ricky, Crush manages to insight that Ricky legitimately thought his insulting drawing would resolve the issue with humor. However, it didn’t change the fact that Ricky framed an innocent guard for public solicitation, which would result in public shaming in the stocks. Ricky agrees to return to the Guard Captain and confess to his lies, with the captain deciding that spending the night in the Death House should be punishment enough, but just for good measure even if the group does survive the night they won’t be getting their 100 gold back.
After a quick dinner the party finally goes to the Death House, finding a relatively simple cabin, with a large forge on one side, although any blacksmithing equipment has long ago been removed. While examining the house they find a strange dresser that seems to be bolted to the floor, and with a false bottom drawer. Tearing it apart, they find a metal box embedded in the floor, and stomping on the wood they surmise that it’s forming some kind of tube or tunnel under the cabin which connects back to both the fireplace and the forge.
Examining the forge, the party finds 11 human skulls hidden in the coal… and also realize that the forge is much deeper than it needs to be, filled all the way through with coal. However, as Crush is examining one of the skulls he’s hit with hallucinations… seeing his own allies as skeletal monsters. Ricky, however, had prepared for this exact scenario after what happened to Crash, and immediately disables Crush using Hideous Laughter. Ash realizes that, as an Undead, she’s unaffected by the spell and examines a skull, using her arcane knowledge to discern it’s a curse, which Corrio is thankfully able to dispel. As Ash investigates further, her intimate knowledge of necromancy helps her to discern that this entire building is a font, used to trap souls. In addition to those murdered in the house itself, tunnels underneath lead into the cemetery, where the souls of the recently interred can be trapped as well. The tunnels under the cabin are filled completely with Coal. If the fireplace and forge are lit at once it would consume the souls within, which a powerful Necromancer could use to create an army of at least 300 Undead spirits at their command.
Corrio is able to cleanse the trapped spirits with Holy Water, and Ricky’s Dragon Mark allows him to create up to 30 gallons of water… unfortunately, there’s no container available to hold that much water. Luckily, Crush and Azure are able to use their crafting skills to make a large wood and leather container able to hold the necessary water. The water is poured into the forge, cleansing it with Holy energy… although the intense rush of divine energy starts to damage Ash, but fortunately only temporarily. As the souls are freed Azure has a sudden revelation… why was the Dwarven Man so eager to bet people to enter the Death House in the first place? Sensing that he’s a part of this, the party quickly searches for him, finding him watching the house. Crush interrogates him by threatening to touch him against one of the skulls, with the mans’ reaction revealing that he knows the curse that was attached to them. He reveals that he’s not the first caretaker to this house, and that he’s being paid by a mysterious cloaked figure to make sure that new souls are regularly fed to the house. He reveals the time and location of his next meeting with the figure, and the party readies to face this mysterious necromancer. Although suspicion remains… the Captain of the Guard also seems to be making a healthy profit from allowing others to enter the Death House...
Last night's game went a little wild, but the party is ready to focus and move forward. See what happens next at twitch.tv/afterdisbooty!
The party are awoken by a vivid dream, where a shadowy figure warns them to stop their investigation, with the dream figure able to actually damage both Ash and Azure. Undeterred, the party resolves to speak to the Guard Captain and ask more about the Dwarf that had been arrested the night before. However, the town has called in more guards, and when the party tries to speak to the captain he insists on separating the party from Corrio, and then putting the group in holding while he prepares to question them. Unfortunately, he also takes all their weapons and equipment… which presents a major problem, seeing as Ash carries a human skull covered with necromantic markings which she uses to communicate with her patron.
Knowing they’re in danger, Ash uses magic to start a fight in another cell. With the guards distracted, Ricky uses Mage Hand to steal the keys, and Crush and Azure tear out a window to make their escape. In the ensuing chaos Ash and Fidget use Spider Climb and an invisibility spell from Ricky to recover the missing equipment.
Briefly reconvening outside of the prison, Azure, Ricky, and Crush go to find Corrio, while Ash and Fidget sneak in the opposite direction to secure an escape. When Guards attempt to grab Crush, Ricky tries to stop them with Heat Metal… not realizing his own strength when he kills the guard outright. There’s some trouble extracting Corrio, with Ricky attempting to polymorph Corrio, but the local cleric quickly dispels the magic. Meanwhile, Ricky’s attempts at casting other concentration spells eliminates Ash’s invisibility, nearly getting her captured by guards… but Fidget makes a quick sneak attack, stabbing the guard repeatedly in the throat. Meanwhile, Crush goes out of his way to avoid killing another guard, knocking him unconscious as they reconvene with Fidget and Ash.
Ash has managed to find an unguarded house boat prepared to set sail, which Fidget manages to steal. The entire party piles in, sailing down the river toward the cabin the Dwarven Man had mentioned to Crush. On arrival, they find an unusual structure… a seemingly superfluous wooden bridge spanning two rocky hills. While exploring it, the party encounters an Oojoo, the flesh and bone abomination they’ve faced in the past. On a whim, Ricky hits the Oojoo with fairy fire, on the off-chance that there are other invisible creatures nearby. Shockingly, there are two the Depraved Gloom assassins present. Struggling with the elevated terrain, the party nonetheless prevails, with only Fidget being diseased by the Oojoo this time.
While investigating the rapidly deteriorating body of an assassin, They discover a scroll written in abyssal, making it clear that the Depraved Gloom were behind the Death House, and that they were somehow sowing distrust and suspicion among the guards. However, the cabin the party was originally searching for is nowhere to be seen, with the only clue being what appears to be a single giant chicken footprint. Ash recalls legends of a powerful Hag who traveled in a strange cottage enchanted with giant chicken feet. Using the ability granted by his (homebrew) Bardic College, Ricky uses the scroll as a focus to track the chicken house, leading the party back to the river as they sail through the night...
