So for Christmas, we played a a game of dice and gifts, and our DM had prepared envelopes with magic items in them for all of us. He later incorporated the items into the campaign. Staff of the Woodlands was in there, and I can't effing believe the awesomeness of that staff.
Has anyone got any cool combos, any wicked uses, any awesome tricks that they have performed with this staff? The balance of it seems off by a long shot, but that must have been debated elsewhere earlier (?), but for now I am just super stoked I get to play with a legendary kind of item.
One thing to remember about Staff of the Woodlands. It is a rare item but because it can cast Awaken, it requires that spell to be cast every day during its creation. Awaken requires a 1000 gp agate. That is a lot of agates that need to be used to create it. Staff of the Woodlands isn’t your average rare item.
Right! Okay, I never found the actual recepies (spelling?) for making various magical items - can youlink to that, please as I would LOVE to incorporate that into my games!
Also, it doesn't say anywhere that it can cast Awaken.

Did your DM maybe edit yours a bit? Staff of the woodlands can cast awaken for 5 charges: staff of the woodlands
The Agate is a component for the spell awaken: awaken (for some silly reason the tooltip doesn't include that info, but if you to the spell page it will mention it in small italics on the bottom of the spell description)
However, the mention of the requirement to cast the spell everyday during creation seems to be a mistake. I remember that as being a requirement in 3.5, however I didn't notice it in the magic item creation in Xanthars.
On the requirement of the agate, it says in the DMG that you don't need to spend the gold/component when casting with a magic item. For broken combos, awaken a tree, then train it in the druidic arts. Once it hits level one, give it the staff and have it awaken a tree a day for the next 100 years or so if you are a long-lived race. the reason it does the awakening is that the 8 hour casting time is not viable for any character to do it themselves. after 100, or even 10 years you now have at least 3650 CR 2 Awakened trees at your disposal. I also would recommend bringing one on an adventure so it gets xp, then have it train the rest of the trees as druids or barbarians. I made a homebrew under Ent Druid if you want a taste of the concept.

I 100% misread my item description. It does, indeed, say that the staff can cast MOFO AWAKEN. It's a rediculously overpowered "Rare" item. The only thing that prevents this from being borderline legendary (when you consider the possible effects of the inherent powers of the staff over time - see other poster's reply above) is the fact that it is tied to druids specifically. While limiting the use of the staff, the power of it is still mindboggling to me. I mean, casting pass without a trace continously/ no cost is game-breaking to be honest. GM also provided another player with a sword of Wish (he had to back down on that, though, when he realised the potential of that spell as well :-D)

What's that now? I must have missed that (Or the DM might have missed that) - where does it say anything about a 1000g agate?
They’re needed to create the staff, not use it.

I was going by the Crafting Magic Items section in the DMG p 129.
