I need some help with creating an incantation for an execution that is to take place during this week's session. (Sorry, I'm not good at making poems and stuff)
One of our players has asked that she have her current character be killed off so that she can replace it with another character. Me and the DM have been working on a way to do the execution in a way that will be spectacular and memorable. We've decided to do it like this. The victim (the player's character) will be taken to a special part of the land and placed in a special chair designed to hold prisoners of this type. The chair has been enchanted so that it holds the victim so that she cannot get free. The executioner (the main villain) will have to execute a special ritual that involves creating a special potion (not one that is consumed) in a caldron over a blue flame. (We have all of that worked out). The villain must recite a special incantation (this is what we need help with) that will produce a series of lightning flashes that strike the victim repeatedly until the victim is reduced to dust. The 'ceremony' must take place during midnight on the current 'new moon' cycle.
All I need is the actual incantation that the villain will have to recite.
Oh,and we also need to be included as part of a separate incantation that will allow the execution to be 'broadcast' over the entire land. Both sound and visual. The image will appear in the sky for all to see and hear. (This is to be a "public" execution)
Neither me or the DM are good enough at rhymes or poetry to write these incantations. We've gotten help with this sort of thing before on here and they worked out great.
BTW, we want to thank those that have helped us with this in the past.
P.S. I hope I put this in the correct section, if not I appologize.
For what purpose is the ritual being done? Because if its mearly a show of power, then no poem or anything needs to be done. You also dont need a limerick for a ritual if that ritual is just declaring what is happening. Something like 'With this life we rejuvenate the soul of the land'.
I, personally, need more information about why the ritual is happening to be able to come up with something for it. The theatrics of the event is great but theatrics don't nessesssitate content.
That is one of the most complex ways to execute someone. There are so many elemental spells that would have the same end result without all of the strange mucking about (lightning bolt, distinergrate or call lightning for example). With such modes of killing being common, the need for such a ritual is hard to justify. Such rituals are usually for extra end results like capturing the soul or locking away a creature in an eternal prison. Death is too easy to be worth that much effort.
You have to understand the villain. She loves to demonstrate her new powers and show them off in an effort to strike more fear into her subjects. Normally she is just an everyday sorceress, but she has gotten help from an ancient wizard who can manipulate the normal magic and create new magic that can be much more powerful than just the standard magic. This wizard is able to combine spells and create new ones (we have another DM that is much more experienced in creating new spells that takes care of that). Edeessea (The villain) uses fear to control others. One of the ways she causes fear is by performing these rituals to do even the most simplest tasks such as executing someone. Sure she could just maybe use a simple 'dissintegrate' spell to execute the character, but that doesn't show her power. She likes to make things very elaborate. What strikes more fear, just casting a spell to do something, or perform a ritual to do the same thing? Which one would show more power? Like I said, you have to know and understand Edeessea, she is ruthless and powerful and likes to show her power.
Also, our players have gotten used to the way Edeessea does things. It keeps them on their toes. Edeessea is unpredictable and never does anything simple.
OK, the player is having you kill off her current character so she can create another. But what does the current CHARACTER think about this? If the Big Bad is sacrificing someone important in the campaign, is she "getting" anything beyond shock and awe amongst her subjects? Is this special method of execution going to bolster the big bad (new magic item, unique spell components for an even more powerful spell, determining the current location of some fell artifact, etc). If the character is aware they are the lamb for the slaughter, why are they doing it?
Perhaps the incantation is in two parts, the Big Bad monologs a few things, and then the character (who would be charmed, possessed, controlled in some fashion to say the necessary "I give my soul for my master to get the goodies." If the character is AWARE of the need to sacrifice herself to thwart the baddie, perhaps she can find a method to counter the charm and then say, "I give my soul to steal my master's goodies" Make sure this is said JUST before the final blast ,so the Big Bad not only doesn't get what they were working towards, they are losing some of what they already had.
Prose can be EVERY bit as powerful as poetry. And you don't necessarily NEED the words of the incantation if you can vividly describe the effects. Something like:
And the Big Bad says, "Through the power of Belial, upon whose throne you sit..." at which point the very air begins to thrum and pulse. You hear the sounds of fiends crying out in rapture as she continues her incantation. Fear, terror and dread begin to fill your heart and soul as she recites the next line: "The powers which I draw to me..." As you feel the breath in your lungs drawn out into the fetid night air. After an agony of what feel like days she finally says: ...and do you freely give your life that I might extend my own?"
If you have built the tension to a fever pitch, the description of the effects will be enough. Do you remember the knife slashes from the movie Psycho? No, because the slashes themselves weren't necessarily to create the single most memorable shower scene in all of cinema. If you WOULD have seen the slashes, it would as likely become just another scene to fade into obscurity amongst a slew of horror films from that Era. And no one would remember the movie he made before _The_Birds_.

We did do some modifications last night. Edeessea is reaching the end of her current incarnation and must soon 'regenerate' in order to continue. As of right now she does not have the power to complete the re-incarnation, so she needs to 'absorb' the needed power from 'victims' that she executes. She is going to have to do this to at least 3 people to gain enough power.
The character being killed off has not really had any important part in things up until now. She too will come back as another character . You see, Edeessea has taken control over all the lands, mostly by fear. In order to restore happiness to the lands, she must be defeated and destroyed if possible. Right now, no one is powerful enough to do so. That is the purpose of some of our current characters getting killed off. Each one that dies ,their souls and power join a collective soul that when released will be powerful enough to defeat Edeessea.
The way the game is set up is a bit complicated. Our DM is doing a wonderful job of keeping up with things though. You see, in the game there are some ladies that are playing as PCs, but before the game even started, it was decided (and approved) by both those players and the DM that they would eventually be killed off and they would come back as new characters. This is a story plot. So it needs to be done. Everyone has been notified of these changes and all players are fine with it, in fact they like it because it adds 'twists' to things. The thing they have to do is keep in mind that the whole goal is to gain enough power to either defeat and imprison Edeessea so she is no longer a threat, or in worse cases, defeat and destroy her. The one playing Edeessea is as of right now an NPC, but will soon become a PC to make things more interesting. Again, the players have been notified of this and they all are fine with it. Our DM always lets us know about these things before she commits to doing them. It actually has made the game more interesting. The player who is taking over Edeessea when the time comes is excited about doing so. Right now Edeessea is played by the DM as an NPC, but the player who is taking her over has created an actual Character Sheet for her when its time to change her to a PC. So that is the purpose for the incantation, it's not just to kill off the victim, but so that her very soul and magic can disperse and join with the collective. Of course no one knows this ,not even Edeessea, she just thinks she performing an execution, as does everyone else. There is only one person (and NPC) that really knows what is happening. No one has even met her yet.
Oh, Edeessea only absorbs the life force, not the victim's magic or soul. The life energy is all that Edeessea needs to become powerful enough to regenerate. The soul and magic join the collective, but Edeessea does not know this, nor do anyone else for that matter. It will be revealed at a later time. This is a long game with a lot of chapters. It's all Homebrew.
