One of my players want to take revenge against a specific Hill Giant who was responsible for wiping out his village (his backstory). But, accordingly to his BG, this happened 100 yeas ago. What are the chances of this exact same giant is still alive?
I'm also looking for tips on how to run this adventure. PCs need to gather "giant's blood" as part of the main plot, so there's that already. But how to make this encounter more fun and dynamic?
This thread has the answer to how long individual giants live. It depends on the type but no typical giant type usually lives less than 200 years.
As for the PC's wanting to get giant blood, I think a lone giants reputation would probably precede it, and if it wasn't living with any other giants or in a tribe, it, in my opinion at least, would probably have set up some defenses for itself just in case.
It depends on the type, but I think an important thing about making the encounter fun & dynamic is RPing the giant well before & during combat. Reading up about giants in The Monster Manual and Volo's Guide to Monsters might help with this or give you some ideas.
Do keep in mind that the weakest type of giant, (a hill giant) is CR 5 on its own. So your players would have to be fairly high level to fight that.
You're the DM, you control the whims of gods. You can just make giants live as long as you want them to live! The only question is whether you want the giant to still be alive or not.

Being gender-fluid and pansexual makes roleplay a lot easier!
if you go for the sources cited above, 200 years or so.
If you go by one of the foremost of giant-based books, the BFG by Roald Dahl, then Giants is living forever. Sometimes, they is disappearing with a Pop, but otherwise they is going on and on and on.
