Basically curious how DM’s feel about the idea of starting a new Campaign now, in the narrow gulf between here and the launch of One D&D. I’m on the cusp of coming back to the game, and as a DM, but I’m kinda feeling like the only things I should focus on would be creating and then fine tuning the story as much as possible, plus creating (and smoothing) a bunch of maps. I run my games on VTT so having some good maps available is a must. The idea of recruiting a group at this time seems silly since I don’t think there’s much time for anything besides a slew of one shots, and I dislike one shots for anything beyond one or two as filler between the bigger campaigns (and best run by an assistant DM).
But I’m also on the ropes and I dunno. Obviously having 6 months (plus?) should allow me to create a great campaign and streamline it (at least for levels 1 through 10(+i’ish)) but I’m also wondering if I’m being overly cautious. So I figured I’d ask a bunch of people and see how others feel and are approaching their own games.
Feh. People who play D&D aren't going to just immediately swap over to One D&D the moment it comes out. You might eventually choose to transfer your campaign to the new system, but there are still people out there who play 4e, 3.5e, 3e, 2e, 1e. Just because there's a new addition doesn't mean you have to stop playing this one, and it's certainly not going to kill interest in this system for at least a while.

I have no problems with starting a campaign now, and even if someone were to come to my table wanting to port over some of their One D&D stuff I'd review it and decide if it can be done right away or if it needs to wait. I personally won't be getting One D&D books but I've no objection to others bringing them if only as inspiration and homebrew potential. Besides, I'd already purchased the Legendary Bundle so I've got loads of content to get through!
I concur with TheHumbug above though: 5E works just fine for most people. You'll have many who will slowly transition their current game to One D&D, others who will drop everything to play it, and those who can wait.

Zero is the most important number in D&D: Session Zero sets the boundaries and the tone; Rule Zero dictates the Dungeon Master (DM) is the final arbiter; and Zero D&D is better than Bad D&D.

It’s more like 12 months until the new revised books are here and as others mentioned, if you want to switch over then you probably can, or you can just stick to what you’re playing if you like it. I imagine many of the DM-facing stuff will be usable easily when switching over. Only class stuff will be harder given your players have to change what they use. Some might be eager to do so, though.
So no, I see no reason to delay a campaign. Play some D&D!
You can probably start and finish a moderate size campaign before Next comes out, and if you're really running a multi-year campaign you can look into updating when it comes out.
I started a campaign just last week, but if you want to wait do that but i personaly would run one in this one then if that goes well maybe do it again in the edition but in the end your choice is the one that matters
I never based my campaigns launch on D&D release, this all the way back to the 80's nor will i ever. The only exception was as an Alpha Playtester since i depended on WoTC's releases.
Recently, i didn't wait for OneDnD to launch my next ICEWIND DALE campaign after my last GREYHAWK one. I will also start another GOBLINS campaign soon where characters are evil goblinoids. When the updated core rulebooks release in 2024, i will most likely use latest versions but the campaign storyline won't necessarily change.
That's a long time to wait to play D&D. We are not guaranteed tomorrow. Play now and if you want to update your PCs for the new rules when they come out, then do so.
I guess one of my biggest concerns is how DDB handles D&D 5e post One D&D. If they don’t treat 5e as it’s own edition and/or cease to make it readily available via tools, it’s going to greatly bother me.
I personally won't bother switching to One D&D, I prefer to play heavily house-ruled 5e and less house-ruled 4e.
Wait, what? Is it expected that One D&D will be closer to 4e with player powers for everyone and increased PC capability? My assumption had been that One D&D was going to be a watered down 5e with weaker monsters and PC’s, based on the direction of the newest 5e books. Or am I misunderstanding? I personally loved at least the idea of 4e, so this suggests I might be more drawn to it than I thought.

Interesting. My take on the latest 5e source books is that they represent power increases for characters on average, not a decrease or watered down PCs. I'm also not sure about the monsters being weaker. They have changed their spellcasting abilities that have definitely made some weaker but some have also had the spells replaced with more powerful at will abilities. I personally, don't like the watered down spellcasting abilities for creatures/NPCs but I don't see the all the new monsters as being weaker in any sense.
Finally, the idea seems to be that One D&D (they have stopped calling it that by the way), is intended to mostly just a re-printing of revised core rule books which will try to make the game a bit more accessible and easier to pick up for new DMs and players while retaining compatibility with content from XgtE, TCoE etc. It also looks like they might try to address some of the really borked rules like vision/lighting/lightly obscured/heavily obscured/hiding but we will see.
In terms of direction, I think they will likely try to not go too much towards the 4e design ideas though they might want to. The problem with 4e is that it was a love/hate relationship for many people and it was really not liked by a substantial fraction of their core audience. Folks who didn't like 4e just kept with 3/3.5 (or earlier versions) or picked up Pathfinder which was also based on 3e. If anything, 4e fractured their player base a bit. For many, 5e was a distinct improvement and a shift towards the feel of AD&D in many ways with much better overall mechanics (though the effects of the long rest mechanic and the full restoration of hit points can really change the feel of that aspect of the game from the early versions).
So, unfortunately perhaps, I don't really expect much of a shift towards the 4e design paradigms in this revision.
P.S. To the OP - new campaign now. No one knows what the next revision will look like or when it will be out. They have also said it will remain "compatible" with 5e, so much so that they don't even want to call it 5.5e let alone One D&D, so it should be relatively easy to transition any campaign if you want to go to the revised system.
