Are there any sourcebooks that deal with and detail the land of Thay itself for using for players visiting? I know it is talked about in a few different adventures (Tomb of annihilation and Dead in Thay) but I am looking for one that actually takes place there for reference on details of the cities, locations, etc.
Context:
So, during a recent encounter with a red wizard and his minions, one of my players, decided to open fire before the bard and the cleric had even finished their initial attempts to talk to the wizard. This obviously triggered a big fight, where they wound up killing the wizard and all his minions, who were effectively slaves.
This isn't the first time she has done something like this of late, getting a bit trigger happy and stepping on the parties toes. So, in my INFINITE wisdom, I thought it would be clever and give a little "maybe think before shooting/let your friends try their thing before killing everything" nudge and had them find a note on one of the minions bodies from his husband back in Thay with their two kids that basically said they were slaves there, but the minion was planning on breaking them out and had a plan to rescue them. The idea being that her rash actions doomed the family as well as killed the guy.
Weeeeeelllll, I seemed to have sold it TOO well, because she seized on it, as did the rest of the party, that it was now her duty to find and rescue the family. Players, right when you think you have them pegged they flip the script on you, right?
So this has lead to a situation where they are planning on making their way to Thay and rescuing this family. They spent last session planning out their journey and some side stuff they want to do along the way. They are actually going about it very intelligently, I'm pretty proud of them, lol.
I really don't want to discourage them from doing it, it's my dumb fault for laying a hook like that with out thinking it through, and its classic player behavior to seize on a throw away line and drive a campaign from it. I'm scrambling to put together some bread crumbs for them to follow to get more info on the guy and finding the family, but the biggest part is building the final part of the adventure of them actually going to Thay and rescuing the family, but other than it being where red wizards come from, and being a pretty terrible place, I can't recall or seem to find any source books detailing Thay itself, but with it being such a classic DND location, I have to think there is, or was in an older edition I might be able to track down?

There is a chapter on Thay in the 3.5 sourcebook Unapproachable East. I used that book as a source for a 5E game (I ran Lost Mines of Phandelver, but set it in Aglarond).

Not hat I can locate. Tyranny of Dragons has a little more and takes place in a small part of it.
Best source I could find is this: https://www.realmshelps.net/faerun/thay/index.shtml

You should check out Thay: Land of the Red Wizards on the DMs Guild. Excellent info and a short adventure.
The FR wiki has a pretty extensive entry. And a robust source list at the end, depending on how deep into the rabbit hole you want to go.

Thank you everyone, these are great resources!
The is an adventure called Dead in Thay in Tales from the Yawning Portal. I haven't run it yet so not sure how much lore/info it gives on Thay.

The equivalent 1E sourcebook is FR6 Dreams of the Red Wizards.
