I'm guessing most people on this forum know that calculating CR is not an exact science but more of a messy art. That said, it's helpful to realize that some creatures are just more dangerous than their CR would suggest. Therefore, this thread is for you to get that past frustration of accidentally TPK or almost knocking out the whole party because you unexpectedly ran some critters with abilities too overwhelming for the party.
Starting us off:
Quickling - This CR 1 fey can really pack a wallop against low level PCs. That +8 to hit combined with multi-attack and speed!
Intellect Devourer - Has the hit points of a CR 1 creature, but the offensive potential of something much more dangerous than its CR 2 rating would imply with their Body Thief ability.
shadows. low hit points, but resistant to all mundane damage (and a high AC(i think)). ability damage((strenght) wich is even worse than the int of the intellect devourer, becase the front liners are dealng less and less damage any tine this thing hits them, and the spellcasters dumped it, to everyone dies!) and thesed things are CR 1/2! 1/2!!

Imp. Amazing. Resistant to loads of things. Immune to fire and poison. Fly about... and poison things... with a lot of swagger and RP.
The Tiefling mage has an Imp as a familiar for (reasons)... she's not really playing much anymore but 'Grievous' (Iain Banks fans) is still a great NPC character that keeps returning and is a conduit to that storyline. He also prefers to Shapechange as a bat (again for reasons).
One of my favourite 'playing piece' NPCs - has helped out, hindered and added plot. Always curmudgeonly.

RPGs from '83 - 03. A fair bit of LRP. A big gap. And now DMing again. Froth.

Hmmmm. I find Imps and Quasits to be appropriate to their stated CR. Flight and Shapechanger ability are useful for reconnaissance, but they are not that great for combat when you don't have a ranged attack nor Flyby Attack. These familiars each have significantly less hit points than a Giant Spider, which is also CR 1, but with no resistances.

Pixies are a CR 1/4 creature.
always Invisible, can cast polymorph, Dispel Magic and Fly. They have advantage on all saves vs magic.
